A robbery suspect died after an off-duty Rochester police officer shot him outside of a Greece business Monday night.

Greece police say two women were leaving Elite Spa on West Ridge Road just after 9:30 p.m. when they were robbed at gunpoint. Police say an off-duty Rochester cop saw the incident and asked the suspects to drop their weapons. One suspect failed to grant the officer's request and the officer shot him.

The two suspects then fled the scene.

A Greece Police Officer took one of the suspects into custody a short time later. Police say the other suspect went to St. Mary's hospital and was transferred to Strong Hospital where he later died.

Greece Police Chief Merritt Rahn and Rochester Deputy Chief George Markert both say the officer appeared to have been justified in shooting the suspect but an internal investigation will be conducted.

Greece Police and the Rochester Police Department have not yet released the names of the suspects or the off-duty officer involved in the shooting.

No money was taken during the robbery. Police say one of the victims was pistol-whipped and taken to the hospital for treatment.
