Trump's brave new world

In the alternate universe that much of America now exists in, President Trump on Wednesday gave a press conference to take credit for his great success in Syria. "This was an outcome created by us, the United States, and nobody else," Trump said. "No other nation, very simple. We're willing to take blame and we're also willing to take credit."

Apparently the ethnic cleansing of some 300,000 civilians, the betrayal of a stalwart Kurdish ally, the loss of U.S. credibility and influence in the Middle East, the rise of Russia as the key power broker for the region, the empowerment of Assad and the loosening of pressure on Iran are great accomplishments for Mr. Trump. In this neo-Orwellian world much of America now inhabits, these are all things to congratulate the Trump presidency for. He did, after all, order some 1,000 U.S. troops out of Syria – around the same time he sent another 2,000 to Saudi Arabia.
