How can you have diplomacy with someone who never tells the truth?’: Trump’s North Korea diplomacy blasted as a ‘charade’
On Friday, the mother of slain U.S. student Otto Warmbier spoke critically of President Donald Trump’s efforts to broker peace with North Korea, according to the Washington Post.
North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un’s regime is “absolute evil,” she said at a seminar with the conservative Hudson Institute, adding that “There’s a charade going on right now. It’s called diplomacy. How can you have diplomacy with someone who never tells the truth? I’m all for it. But I’m very skeptical. He lies, he lies, he lies — all for himself and his regime.”
Warmbier, a college student at the University of Virginia, was arrested by North Korean authorities for allegedly trying to steal a propaganda poster of Kim at his hotel while on a guided tour of the country in 2016. He was allegedly tortured by his captors, and was released back to the U.S. a year later in a vegetative state, dying at Cincinnati Medical Center without ever waking up.
Trump has drawn controversy for his lack of interest in pursuing international justice for the incident, as well as for a purported scheme his administration hatched to pay the North Korean government $2 million to secure his release.
