Monsanto, U.S. farm groups sue California over glyphosate warnings

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Monsanto Co and U.S. farm groups sued California on Wednesday to stop the state from requiring cancer warnings on products containing the widely used weed killer glyphosate, which the company sells to farmers to apply to its genetically engineered crops.

California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), which is named in the federal lawsuit, said it stands by the decision to include glyphosate on the state’s list of products known to cause cancer and believes it followed proper legal procedures.

Monsanto and groups representing corn, soy and wheat farmers reject that glyphosate causes cancer. They say in the lawsuit that California’s requirement for warnings would force sellers of products containing the chemical to spread false information.

Food Evolution

GMO propaganda film on Hulu

“Food Evolution” Documentary Supports GMOs, but Not Science

“Food Evolution” devotes a disproportionately small segment to dominant herbicide-resistant crops, and the glyphosate herbicides they were designed to use. And, once again, the discussion is limited to food safety. But even for this narrow topic, the film gets the science wrong.

“Food Evolution” documentary supports GMOs, but not science, Part 2

It emphasizes “minor” GMOs at the near exclusion of those planted on 99 percent of acreage, and it is unjustifiably one-sided on the risks of the most widely used, and GMO-driven, pesticide in the world. It excludes mention of an important carcinogenicity assessment of glyphosate based on incorrect evaluation of the responsible agency by the film’s director. It misrepresents the use of insecticides on major GMO crops and ignores harm to monarch butterflies. It misrepresents organic farming and GMO industry influence on research and media by never mentioning the much larger influence of the GMO industry over scientists. It favors the anecdotal opinion of a few pro-GMO farmers over the concerns of large farmers organizations in the developing world that are troubled by GMOs. It ignores the most prestigious U.S. science body’s assessment that GMOs are just one of several possible means of assuring food security. And it ignores the role of GMOs in globally harmful industrial agriculture. The film excludes the substantial peer-reviewed science on these topics that are not favorable to GMOs, and includes almost exclusively perspectives or research that supports the safety and value of GMOs, including by major representatives of the GMO industry.

In the end, the film is a mockery of science. Acceptance of such propaganda as science will only serve to raise questions about the credibility of the endeavor of science itself unless recognized and identified for what it really is.

Chinese scientists genetically engineered a low-fat pig. But for whose benefit?

“So many scientific breakthroughs that we’ve seen have undesirable consequences,” Harris said. “We won’t know for dozens of years, maybe 100 years, if there are unforeseen consequences for genetically modified animals.”

New Study Shows Human Glyphosate Levels Have More than Doubled in 23 Years

“Prior to the introduction of genetically modified foods, very few people had detectable levels of glyphosate,” says study author Paul Mills, of the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine. “Our exposure to these chemicals has increased significantly over the years but most people are unaware that they are consuming them through their diet.”

“I am concerned,” he tells Radio New Zealand. “This is one of the reasons I put together this study, because there wasn’t such information in the biomedical literature, and I thought we needed it, and we needed to start having some good data to have a conversation around these questions.”

These pre-sliced apples may be a short-cut to health risks.

To accomplish the non-browning effect, scientists at Okanagan Specialty Fruits introduced genetically engineered genes that make their apples produce double stranded RNA (dsRNA) to shut off the browning genes. The question that must be asked: if we consume the dsRNA in the apple, can it influence how our genes work? Will these genetically modified organisms (GMOs), eaten as apple pies, apple salad, or whatever, change our development, physiology, and behavior?

The laboratory process used to create these apples carries multiple health risks according to Dr. Jack Heinemann, a professor of genetics and molecular biology at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Jeffrey Smith interviewed Dr. Heinemann just after the first approval of the genetically engineered non-browning apple in 2015.

Regeneration: Moving Beyond Gloom and Doom on USDA Organic Standards

Last week the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) rejected the pleas of organic activists, farmers and many businesses to “keep the soil in organic” by voting to allow growers of hydroponic vegetables to label their produce “organic.”

The NOSB's vote did little to shore up consumer faith in the USDA Organic label, especially after well-publicized news reports earlier this year that accused a few high-profile organic brands of giving "organic" a bad name by skirting the rules. And it had some industry pioneers so angry and disheartened, that according to the Washington Post they were even “threatening to leave the program they helped create.”

The Rodale Institute and a broad coalition of farmers, ranchers, nonprofits, scientists, and brands on September 13, 2017, unveiled draft standards for a new third-party Regenerative Organic (RO) Certification.

When finalized, the RO certification will go “beyond USDA Organic” by establishing higher standards for soil health, land management, animal welfare and farmer and worker fairness. The RO label will appear on certified regenerative products, next to the “USDA Organic” label, alerting consumers to the fact that the RO-labeled product not only meets USDA organic standards, but exceeds them.

The NOSB’s vote to allow hydroponic foods to be labeled as “USDA Organic” has proven once again that big corporations and federal bureaucrats have greater control over organic standards than organic consumers and small organic farmers. “Big Organic” is now dictating the policies of the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP).

EU Member States Say No to Glyphosate Again: 5 Year Authorization Fails

The Great Glyphosate Rebellion continued Thursday in the European Union, as EU member states refused to back the 5-year license renewal for glyphosate, the world’s most used herbicide.

A qualified majority requires two conditions be met: that 55 percent of EU countries vote in favor, and that the proposal is supported by countries representing at least 65 percent of the total EU population.

“I knew that this would be a big story,” Eng says.

What she didn’t expect was the massive blowback: The university accused her of being an activist, not a journalist, and she was hounded by Twitter trolls who jumped on her story and waged a campaign to discredit her personally.

But I don’t think I have ever seen a group so intent on trying to personally attack the journalist covering the issue.”

Goodbye to Golden Rice? GM Trait Leads to Drastic Yield Loss and “Metabolic Meltdown”

Title 21 U.S.C. - Section 343, Chapter 1 - Adulterated or Misbranded Foods or Drugs

The FDA representative I spoke with this morning explained that if a company advertises a product as "corn free" when, in fact, it contains derivatives of corn; this constitutes false labeling, and is illegal; e.g., corn-derived xanthan gum, corn-derived ascorbic acid, etc. Since corn has not yet been declared an official allergen, they are not required to label corn/corn derivatives in their products; however, they may not make corn-free claims if their products contain any derivatives of corn.

This is why it is very important that you call your state FDA representative to file an adverse reaction report by telephone if you experience an allergic reaction to products labeled as corn free. Note that they require photographs of each side of the container to be submitted to them electronically. It would also be helpful if you save your receipt, so you can let them know the date of purchase and from where the product was purchased.

If you discover a product that is labeled as corn free; but it is apparent that it contains corn derivatives, refer the company to the following USC regulation:

Iowa State Extension forester warns of dicamba dangers

“It’s going to be scary,” said Randall. “Gone will be all the grapes in the state, because one whiff and they are done. Tomatoes are gone, most of your garden will be gone, our trees will be burned. It’s just not good.”

The herbicide’s use is so risky, some insurance companies refuse to back up commercial spraying of dicamba because of the payouts they anticipate.

When affected by dicamba, different species of trees and plants develop different symptoms. The leaves of the mulberry tree fold up into cup shapes, while the leaves of oak trees curl down the center.

This winter, the ISU Forestry extension will create a public website to track the damage of dicamba and provide images of what the herbicide’s damage looks like on a variety of trees. The website will be available next summer.

Landmark research on the toxicity of GM Bt crops by Jonathan Latham

Have Monsanto and the Biotech Industry Turned Natural Bt Pesticides into GMO “Super toxins”?

In our publication, authored along with Madeleine Love and Angelika Hilbeck, of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), we show that commercial GMO Bt toxins differ greatly from their natural precursors. These differences are important. They typically cause GMO Bt proteins to be more toxic. Worse, they also cause them to be active against many more species than natural forms of Bt toxins.

But, as we found, GMO Bt toxins are clearly distinct from natural Bt toxins and those used in more traditional farming methods:...

Why The Food Movement Is Unstoppable

I have proposed five characteristics that define and explain the food movement and distinguish it from other social movements.

1) The food movement is self-organized. It is an anarchic and spontaneous happening that does not depend on specific charismatic leaders.

2) Complementing this, the food movement is universal in its appeal. Rich and poor, employed and unemployed, young and old, anyone is welcome. Thus Prince Charles and landless peasants are both part of it because there are no barriers to entry.

3) The food movement is international. Whatever local needs may be, the food movement can always meet them.

4) The food movement is low-budget. Unlike all other mass movements, the food movement is not dependent on rich donors or powerful foundations. It has a few of those, but is not beholden to them or controlled by them.

5) The food movement has many and diverse values. Health concerns, animal welfare, economic justice, ecological sustainability. All of these find a home there.
