Breaking News: Pre-Sliced, Unlabeled GMO “Arctic” Apples Launching in U.S. Stores this October.
These non-browning GMO apples were genetically engineered by Okanagan Specialty Fruits using RNAi (RNA interference) - a gene silencing technique. The GMO apples have not been independently safety tested. They are engineered to not brown for 3 weeks, which means that nutrient degradation will occur and you won't be able to tell. And we have to wonder what type of antimicrobials they are treated with so they don't grow nasty things on them during that 3 week period where they appear to be fresh.
Apples' natural browning is caused by an enzyme that produces melanin, polyphenol oxidase, which gives cells a brown tint when exposed to oxygen. Scientists believe the browning may play an important role in helping apples to fend off pests and disease. Conventional apples are already at the top of the charts for produce with the highest levels of toxic pesticide residues and residues from up to 40 different pesticides that may be found on any one apple. Many of these pesticides, such as organophosphates, are linked to adverse health impacts including hormone disruption, reproductive disorders and even ADHD. Arctic Apples have been engineered to lack the natural browning enzyme that may help fight diseases and pests, meaning farmers may have to use even more pesticides in growing the GMO apples. Nothing wholesome about that.
“[10oz grab-n-go bags]... provides consumers with the convenience factor they really desire. Moreover, studies show that children consume apples at dramatically higher rates if they are sliced,” says Neal Carter, President of Okanagan Specialty Fruits. Neal admits he's targeting children with these GMO apple slices. We think Neal should just feed them to his own kids and not experiment on other children. Boycott GMO Arctic Apples.
MEPs had been incensed at a Monsanto decision to shun a hearing organised by the environment and agriculture committees, with academics, regulators and campaigners, on 11 October.
The meeting is expected to hear allegations that Monsanto unduly influenced regulatory studies into the safety of glyphosate, a key ingredient in its best-selling RoundUp weedkiller.
“Those who ignore the rules of democracy also lose their rights as a lobbyist in the European parliament,” said the Green party president Philippe Lamberts. “US corporations must also accept the democratic control function of the parliament. Monsanto cannot escape this.”
GMO maize NK603 is not substantially equivalent to its non-GMO counterpart - 2016
Although some polyamines may have beneficial effects in certain contexts, Dr Antoniou said that others, such as putrescine and cadaverine, can produce “various toxic effects. For example, they enhance the effects of histamine, thus heightening allergic reactions, and both have been implicated in the formation of carcinogenic substances called nitrosamines with nitrite in meat products.”
However, what is certain is that the basis for regulatory approvals of NK603 maize looks decidedly shaky. As Dr Antoniou concluded, “Our study clearly shows that the GM transformation process results in profound compositional differences in NK603, demonstrating that this GMO maize is not substantially equivalent to its non-GMO counterpart. Our results call for a more thorough evaluation of the safety of NK603 maize consumption on a long-term basis.”
Erin Brockovich: “Harmful Algae Blooms (HAB) are occurring from coast to coast. They are impacting Drinking Water supplies across the country. Toxic microcystin can cause adverse health effects in people including nausea, headaches, upper respiratory issues and skin irritation. It can cause health problems and be lethal in animals, too. We MUST recognize the cause and address it head on... Illegal and "legal" waste discharges. Nutrients from agriculture and wastewater treatment plants feed uncontrolled growth of natural algae... to toxic levels. No more excuses... Save the Clean Water Act.”
It's bad and it's everywhere: Harmful algal blooms plague Owasco, Skaneateles, Cayuga lakes
Products of new GM techniques must be strictly regulated as GMOs, say scientists
The statement, published on the same day as the EU Commission holds a “High Level Conference” on the new GM techniques, also says that genome editing techniques have become so easy to carry out that they open up the possibility of abuse and inadvertent misuse, including for bioterror purposes.
Gene drives (designed to rapidly spread a trait through populations or entire species) carry a particular risk of causing ecological imbalance and disruption.
Herbicide Atrazine Found to Affect Health Across Multiple Generations
(Beyond Pesticides, September 27, 2017) Adverse health effects caused by exposure to the widely used herbicide atrazine pass down from parents to their children through multiple generations, according to new research published by scientists at Washington State University. This burgeoning area of study on ‘transgenerational’ impacts calls into question the current methodology for assessing toxicity and risk from chemical exposure. With the current U.S. regulatory system permitting food and communities to be awash in toxic pesticides, the results of the study have grave implications for future generations.
Mexican Supreme Court Refuses to Review Monsanto Appeal on GMO Maize Permits
The suspension of planting GMO maize has been in force throughout the country after a court decision three and a half years ago, after a group of organizations, academics and citizens presented a collective action against the planting of GMO maize in Mexico.
In the latest ruling, issued earlier today, Mexico’s Supreme Court refused to review an appeals court decision from 2013, which in effect will allow the appeals court to verify the suspension of permits for the planting of GE corn grain and uphold the enforcement of the ban throughout the country. The original decision included a declaration that the benefits of GMO corn remain unproven.
Dangerous for pets, can be transferred to humans for up to 4 weeks. Repeated chronic exposure may pose possible health risks to veterinarians, veterinary technologists, dog caretakers, and owners.
Human exposure to imidacloprid from dogs treated with advantage(r).
...The glove samples were collected by petting each dog for 5 minutes while wearing a different glove per dog. The blood samples (5 mL from each dog) were collected into EDTA tubes. The imidacloprid residue was determined in the blood extracts and glove samples using RP-HPLC. The highest levels of imidacloprid residues were detected at the 24-h interval in both glove (254.16 +/- 25.49 ppm) and blood (54.06 +/- 3.00 ppb) samples. The blood imidacloprid residue was reduced by one third at the 72-h interval (18.73 +/- 2.00 ppb) and was not detected after 1 week. Imidacloprid residue in the glove samples decreased approximately one third between each collection interval. The residue of imidacloprid in the glove extract by the fourth week was very low (0.08 +/- 0.02 ppm) and not detected by the fifth week. The present findings suggest that following topical application of Advantage(R), imidacloprid residue can be detected in the dog's blood for up to 72 h, and transferable residue on the dog's coat can be detected for up to 4 weeks. Repeated chronic exposure to imidacloprid may pose possible health risks to veterinarians, veterinary technologists, dog caretakers, and owners.

The government is going to counter ‘misinformation’ about GMO foods
The deal to avert a government shutdown, which passed the Senate by a vote of 79 to 18 Thursday, allocates $3 million to “consumer outreach and education regarding agricultural biotechnology,” which includes genetic engineering of food and commodity crops. The money is to be used to tout “the environmental, nutritional, food safety, economic, and humanitarian impacts” of biotech crops and their derivative food products.
First study finds neonic pesticides in US drinking water
In the US, sales of seeds pre-treated with neonics tripled from 2004 to 2014. However concerns over their environmental impacts have also grown and they have been consistently associated with causing harm to bees. So great has the worry been, that there has been a moratorium on their use on flowering crops in the European Union since 2013. A study in 2015 from the US Geological Survey (USGS) found that neonics were widespread in water samples collected from 48 different rivers and streams in the US.
Dr. David Lewis: Science Often Plays Second Fiddle to Politics - 2015
In 1996, I published a two-page commentary in the journal Nature entitled “EPA Science: Casualty of Election Politics.” Three years later, Nature published a research article in which my coauthors and I raised concerns about EPA’s 503 sludge rule, which regulates biosolids.
This Clinton-era rule allows all toxic chemical wastes in biosolids, except for nine heavy metals, to be applied to farms, forests, golf courses, school playgrounds and other public and private lands at millions of times higher levels than permitted in air and water.
To discredit me, the head of EPA’s Office of Wastewater Management in Washington, D.C., and one of his subordinates, had breakfast and lunch with executives of Synagro Corporation. Synagro, the leading company in the biosolids business, provided EPA allegations of research misconduct against me, which Synagro and EPA subordinate distributed publicly. EPA stopped supporting my research and later transferred me to UGA to await termination.
In 2008, a survey of 1,600 ORD scientists by the Union of Concerned Scientists found that more than half had experienced political interference within the previous five years. Twenty-two percent witnessed selective or incomplete use of data to justify an EPA regulation, and 17 percent were directed to inappropriately exclude or alter technical information. Many respondents said they feared retaliation if they didn’t comply.
Deadly Immunity – Government Cover-up of a Mercury/Autism Scandal
(World Mercury Project note: With the ongoing mainstream media blackout on questions regarding vaccine safety, we want to remind our followers of the publication–and subsequent retraction–of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s 2005 article “Deadly Immunity” in Salon. The history of repression of crucial vaccine safety data runs deep. The article laid out the scientific link between thimerosal and childhood neurological disorders and published explosive excerpts from the transcripts from the CDC’s secretive June 2000 Simpsonwood conference which brought together government public health officials, vaccine manufacturers and professional medical associations. The article was groundbreaking at the time and received lots of media attention for uncovering the cozy relationship between government and industry at the expense of children’s health. Even though a dozen years have passed, the article’s facts have stood the test of time. An important read for people new to the movement and long-time advocates alike.)
In June 2000, a group of top government scientists and health officials gathered for a meeting at the isolated Simpsonwood conference center in Norcross, Georgia. Convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the meeting was held at this Methodist retreat center, nestled in wooded farmland next to the Chattahoochee River, to ensure complete secrecy. The agency had issued no public announcement of the session — only private invitations to fifty-two attendees. There were high-level officials from the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration, the top vaccine specialist from the World Health Organization in Geneva and representatives of every major vaccine manufacturer, including GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Wyeth and Aventis Pasteur. All of the scientific data under discussion, CDC officials repeatedly reminded the participants, was strictly “embargoed.” There would be no making photocopies of documents, no taking papers with them when they left.
