'Murderer' spray-painted on statue of Columbus in Binghamton

Someone spray-painted that word this weekend down the side of a statue of Christopher Columbus, located next to the Broome County Courthouse in downtown Binghamton.

While the statue had been cleaned by Saturday evening, remains of the graffiti could still be seen.

"The destruction of county property is disrespectful," Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said in a statement released Saturday night. "Regardless of your beliefs, this type of action is unacceptable."

The graffiti was discovered early Saturday afternoon, a Binghamton police official said.

As of Sunday afternoon, Binghamton police did not have any suspects in the case and are not aware of any similar incidents of graffiti in Binghamton.

Binghamton detectives are currently investigating the incident, police said.
