NOFA-NY Press Statement on Governor Cuomo’s New York Grown & Certified Label

Last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the launch of a New York State Grown & Certified Labeling program, including a $20 million food hub in the Bronx. The program aims to label NYS farm fresh food to assure residents that these foods are held to a high standard.

In his announcement, the governor said that many food labels on supermarket shelves have no legal definitions, and noted that this new certification program will be the first to inspect farms. Unfortunately, he missed that organic labels have a legal definition, meet a high standard, require annual on-farm and business inspections, and have existed in NYS and the entire country since 2002.

Organic labeling is the most well-defined consumer food label, with a definition written in federal law (OFPA 1990) and detailed regulations used nationwide. They cover practices that eliminate toxic herbicides, chemical fertilizers and GMOs, while assuring consumer safety from chemical residues. Certifiers are accredited by the USDA to administer those regulations. A government-recognized National Organic Standards Board publicly reviews standards twice a year, and receives input from consumer, environmental and farmer organizations to ensure regulations and labels uphold the integrity of organics.

The Northeast Organic Farming Association of NY (NOFA-NY) is the state’s largest federally accredited organic certifier, certifying nearly 900 of 1,400+ NYS farms and food businesses. NOFA-NY oversees the Federal regulations on these farms and businesses, as well as physically inspects them at least once a year to ensure consistent regulation compliance. Our certified farmers and food businesses work hard to comply with regulations, pay to certify and accept both planned and unplanned inspections and testing of their products.

NOFA-NY is pleased that Governor Cuomo has come out so strongly in support of our NYS- produced food, and we encourage further clarification of labels, such as “natural” and “antibiotic free,” which have no legal definitions. But, to put organic in the same category with vague marketing terms does a huge disservice to New York organic farms and businesses, as well as the organic food movement as a whole.

Following ingestion of dicamba, symptoms of poisoning may include vomiting, shortness of breath, slowed heart rate, loss of appetite, cyanosis and muscle spasms.1 Gastrointestinal bleeding may occur occasionally.9 In very severe poisoning cases, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain may be followed by coma.9


Other reported health effects following dicamba ingestion include hyperthermia, metabolic acidosis, renal failure and increases in certain liver enzymes.9


Extended inhalation exposures may cause dizziness, irritation of the nose, pharynx and chest, resulting in coughing.2 Additionally, peripheral neuromuscular and gastrointestinal symptoms have been reported following inhalation exposures.9

In China, the US, and Sweden, new methods of genetic engineering such as CRISPR are being used on forest trees. The first field trials are planned to take place in Sweden with genetically engineered poplars that show a range of genetic changes in their genome that affect flowering, growth, production of branches, leaves, and roots. The goal of this type of engineering is to drastically change the phenotype and characteristics of the trees, without any specific purpose being provided. The poplars are genetically manipulated using various methods of genetic engineering, including the so-called CRISPR technique, which is said to ease deletion and insertion of DNA.

Monsanto Just Made a Massive Mistake

A couple of weeks ago, the Environmental Protection Agency announced it had gotten an "unusually high number of reports of crop damage that appear related to misuse of herbicides containing the active ingredient dicamba." Complaints of drooping and often dead crops appeared in no fewer than 10 states, the EPA reports. In Missouri alone, the agency says it has gotten 117 complaints "alleging misuse of pesticide products containing dicamba," affecting more than 42,000 acres of crops, including peaches, tomatoes, cantaloupes, watermelons, rice, peas, peanuts, alfalfa, cotton, and soybeans.
