INSIGHT-GMO backlash threatens beet farmers as foodmakers swap sugars 10/29/15

"For beet farmers, the situation has gotten so bad that they are boosting their lobbying efforts in Washington and launching their first major offensive to combat growing public opposition through a social media campaign.

Western Sugar, one of eight sugarbeet co-operatives in the United States, is already seeing a dent in sales as consumers turn away from GMO.

"We are seeing an impact," said Larson. "A lot of our customers are decreasing their orders because they want non-GMO sugar. It feels like it's more and more by the day." She declined to give specific details on volumes of sales lost or on customers that have moved away from their sugar."

Major packaged-food companies lost $4 billion in market share alone last year, as shoppers swerved to fresh and organic alternatives. Can the supermarket giants win you back?

If any one of these terms raised a hair on the back of your neck, left a sour taste in your mouth, or made your lips purse with disdain, you are part of Big Food’s multibillion-dollar problem. In fact, you may even belong to a growing consumer class that has some of the world’s biggest and best-known companies scrambling to change their businesses.

A third conveyed what her industry feared would be the largest casualty of the public’s “mounting distrust of Big Food”—that shoppers would turn away from them for good. “We understand that increasing numbers of consumers are seeking authentic, genuine food experiences,” said Campbell Soup Co.

The inherent risk with such acquisitions is that the parent company swallows up the scrappy upstart into what food industry veteran Alan Murray calls “the machine”—a hidebound, groupthink corporate enterprise—rather than learning from its entrepreneurial culture.

Monsanto Research Site in France Goes up in Flames

Caught On Film, George H. W. Bush And Monsanto Collaborate On GMO Assault.. “Call me…we’re in the dereg business.” Then he adds, “Maybe we can help.”
They were talking about Roundup, the glyphosate-containing product whose main ingredient was recently declared a likely human carcinogen by the World Health Organization.
This is followed by seven words that will eventually change the game in favor of Monsanto. The clip shows Bush laughing and saying of Monsanto’s pleas to hasten the regulatory process, “Call me…we’re in the dereg business.” Then he adds, “Maybe we can help.”
The terms "government" and "conspiracy" are synonymous and inseparable. The article and 2 minute film clip below capture the collusion between George H. W. Bush and Monsanto that fully kicked off the ongoing GMO nightmare. This is a stellar example of "business as usual" between the criminals that currently run the world. Copy and share.

Health investigators link E. coli cases to local Chipotle restaurants

Tamara Bennett - Not sure if people actually want the real facts or just want to spread vicious rumors about what they THINK is happening. But if you want the truth, Chipotle has closed several locations by their OWN choice because of a farm they get their lettuce from, which is where the E.Coli came from. Chipotle sources it's ingredients locally to support local farmers. They are also GMO free. A very healthy place to eat! Chiptole is completely free of any fault here, and most all of the store closures are just to be safe. My husband works at a Chipotle that wasn't even using the lettuce in question, but they still shut down. So, there ya go. Have a Happy Halloween everyone, and enjoy your day with truth!

He tells of hearing about a regional favorite called Yahnke that was thought to have died out. Bussey found a tree in northeast Iowa and took scion wood with the owner’s permission. When he returned a year later, the tree and others in the old orchard had been torn out. “We are always looking for old varieties, especially if they originated in the upper Midwest,” says Bussey. “Let us know if you have an old tree. We would love to hear about it. We may take scion wood from it or know someone who would.”

But at the first meeting of the New York State’s Pollinator Task Force (Aug 6 2015), commercial beekeeper Jim Doan was flabbergasted to learn that state officials had appointed two representatives of the national pesticide industry to the 12-member panel. “It’s very difficult for a beekeeper to think he can get a fair shake,” he commented.

There is a lawsuit in the California Court System against Monsanto for death of a dog from Roundup being used in a dog park. This may be the dog in question. I also lost a pet to a form of mouth cancer. Roundup sprayed in public parks and in back and front yards is one of the ways that Monsanto and company are killing off our pets. The other way they are destroying our pets is through pet food products we feed to our pets that contains BT GMO corn and soy grains and oils that also contains Glyphosate.

What Zen Honeycutt has to say to the European Mothers - Zuerich, 03.11.2015

After 20 years directly spraying our food with glyphosate, we are realizing that it does not dry, wash or cook off, we are eating it and it is toxic and harmful to life. However, we American mothers are seeing that when we remove GMOs and toxic pesticides due to chemical farming, our children get better, and we have the science to back up our findings. This is what I came to share with Europeans. I want you to prevent the harm that is happening in America from happening to your children and loved ones. It is not enough for my family to eat organic. My son’s future spouses are out there somewhere, and are likely eating GMOs.

COMMENTS FOR THE ?#?FDA? PUBLIC MEETING Oct. 30 Steven M. Druker, J.D. Author, Altered Genes, Twisted Truth, Executive Director, Alliance for Bio-Integrity

Modernizing the Regulatory System for Biotechnology Products: First Public Meeting

For more than twenty years, the FDA’s behavior regarding genetically engineered foods has been consistently deplorable. Not only has it routinely issued false and misleading statements, it has seriously violated explicit mandates of federal food safety law – to the extent that every genetically engineered food on U.S. supermarket shelves sits there illegally.

And these allegations are not exaggerations. They are solidly backed up by documents that were pried from the FDA’s own files through a lawsuit my organization initiated.

For instance, when the FDA issued its policy statement on GE foods in 1992, it claimed it was not aware of any information showing that these products differ from other foods in any meaningful or uniform way, despite the fact its files contained multiple memos from its own scientists explaining how GE foods do indeed differ, why they pose greater risks, and why none should be presumed safe unless its safety has been demonstrated through rigorous testing. The pervasiveness of the concerns within the scientific staff is attested by a memo from an FDA compliance officer who declared: "The processes of genetic engineering and traditional breeding are different, and according to the technical experts in the agency, they lead to different risks."

Moreover, the FDA compounded the fraud by claiming that GE foods were “Generally Recognized as Safe” among experts and could be marketed without the requirement of any safety testing at all, even though its files reveal that it knew there was no expert consensus – and even though the law mandates that foods containing novel substances must be established safe through solid technical evidence.

Furthermore, to create the illusion that responsible regulation was being exercised, the agency set up a voluntary consultation process that it claims affords “rigorous” review. But the process is not a genuine scientific review, and the FDA’s Biotechnology Strategic Manager has acknowledged that fact – while admitting that the agency does not even request or receive any original test data.

The agency’s shameful behavior continues, and although by now it is well aware of much more information showing that GE foods significantly differ from others, it persists in its bogus claim that it is “not aware” of any; and this blatant falsehood was repeated by an FDA official just last week at the Senate Agriculture Committee hearing. She also asserted that the consultation process is so rigorous that it resolves “all safety issues,” which is not only misleading but ridiculous, because the process is far too superficial to achieve such certitude.

It is high time that the FDA stops deceiving Congress and the public and stops violating the law. It is high time that the agency starts telling the truth about GE foods and at long last obeys the law by removing them from the market and requiring that they be demonstrated safe via formal food additive petitions. Otherwise, it will continue to serve the interests of Monsanto while turning its back on the public interest.

Alexis Baden-Mayer's Statement: Thank you so much to everyone at the White House, the FDA, the EPA and the USDA

who had a hand in convening this opportunity for public comment.

I’m Alexis Baden-Mayer. I’m here today representing the Organic Consumers

Association where I work as Political Director, as well as our ally Moms Across America

and Zen Honeycutt who directs that organization. Zen and I represent some of the millions of people who are searching for the hidden truth about genetically engineered foods. People who are trying to navigate a marketplace where foods contain secret ingredients and 99.7 percent of the GMOs are pesticide plants, genetically engineered to either increase our exposure to dangerous herbicides or turn our foods into toxic insecticides, or both.

Many of our members share a similar story. Whether it’s breast cancer or reproductive issues or painful digestive problems or gall bladder removal or kidney disease or diabetes or obesity, the story is always the same: I was sick. I got medical treatment. I was still sick. I got GMOs out of my diet. I’m starting to get my health back. And, of course, this story can be about loved ones, and that’s what Zen experienced. Her children had life-threatening allergies and autism spectrum symptoms, but their health improved when she put them on a non-GMO diet.

The U.S. must begin to put this inherently risky technology in check and finally grant to U.S. citizens the same kind of sensible regulations that just about every other country has conceded are necessary: GMO labels, pre-market safety-testing of GMOs, and restrictions on where and how GMOs are grown. We need a moratorium on the GMOs that turn our food into insecticides or allow our food to soak up dangerous herbicides.

Genetically engineered crops led to an increase in overall pesticide use by 404 million pounds from the time they were introduced in 1996 through 2011.

It’s time to take glyphosate off the market, now that the World Health Organization has declared it a probable human carcinogen. Over 80% of all GMOs grown worldwide today are engineered to absorb this carcinogenic herbicide. Glyphosate absorbed into an engineered plant cannot be removed and we are consuming it at levels far above what has been shown to cause harm.

There are hundreds of scientific studies that show how human health can be seriously harmed by GMOs and related pesticides, and we’ll submit these in our written comments.

Tampons with Glyphosate: Underpinnings of Modern Period Problems? - Nov 2, 2015 by Chandler Marrs, PhD

If we look at women’s health in particular, I cannot help but wondering if glyphosate leaching tampons have something to do with the increase in menstrual related problems like fibroids, endometriosis, PCOS, and others. The female vagina and cervix are remarkably efficient vehicles for drug absorption. The vaginal epithelium provides a vast surface area that is richly vascularized and highly innervated. Drugs and other chemicals absorbed via this route directly enter the bloodstream and avoid detoxification via the liver, meaning lower dosages are required to reach the same effect as an orally ingested medication. Small concentrations, therefore, could induce large effects. And small, regular exposures to glyphosate is likely what we get from tampon use.

EPA Used Monsanto’s Research to Give Roundup a Pass - 11/3/15

But the EPA’s exoneration — which means that the agency will not require additional tests of the chemical’s effects on the hormonal system — is undercut by the fact that the decision was based almost entirely on pesticide industry studies. Only five independently funded studies were considered in the review of whether glyphosate interferes with the endocrine system. Twenty-seven out of 32 studies that looked at glyphosate’s effect on hormones and were cited in the June review — most of which are not publicly available and were obtained by The Intercept through a Freedom of Information Act request — were either conducted or funded by industry. Most of the studies were sponsored by Monsanto or an industry group called the Joint Glyphosate Task Force. One study was by Syngenta, which sells its own glyphosate-containing herbicide, Touchdown.

California Study Links Glyphosate Use and Environmental Injustice - (Beyond Pesticides November 4, 2015)

“We’ve uncovered a disturbing trend where poor and minority communities disproportionately live in regions where glyphosate is sprayed,” said Nathan Donley, Ph.D., a staff scientist with the Center for Biological Diversity. “In high doses glyphosate is dangerous to people, and California can’t, in good conscience, keep allowing these communities to pay the price for our overreliance on pesticides.”

Organic Vodkas: Why It’s Important and Where To Find Them

The Plot Thickens

A number of Monsanto’s cheerleaders are also worried that a high-profile public vote and debate in the Senate, with a possible filibuster by Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders of Vermont, will cause a major consumer backlash and a widespread boycott of GMA “Traitor Brands.” As Fortune magazine warned in a recent issue, the DARK Act lobby may indeed succeed in ramming through a highly unpopular bill in Congress abolishing Vermont and other states’ rights to label GMOs, but it could turn into a classic case of “winning the battle but losing the war.”

Obama’s New Pick to Head the FDA is an “Ultimate Insider” for Big Pharma

A recent exposé by the New York Times revealed that Califf’s multi-million dollar research center at Duke received more than 60 percent of its funding from the industry, while his 2014 financial disclosure documents showed drug companies like Eli Lilly, Merck, and Novartis paid him hefty fees for “consulting” and in salary support.

And as the Boston Globe reported on Wednesday, Califf also took the “highly unusual” step of removing his name from a series of scientific papers criticizing the FDA’s oversight of clinical trials—”a decision that could raise ethical concerns,” explains the Globe‘s Sheila Kaplan.

By the end of today, all 19 government requests for bans of GM crop cultivation are expected to go unchallenged by biotech companies, pathing the way for two thirds of the EU’s farmland and population to remain GM-free. The growing opposition to GM crops coincides with a new Greenpeace report reviewing evidence of GM environmental risks, market failures, and increased pesticide use.
