Public schools in Denver, Co., are actively seeking out illegal immigrants to hire as teachers.
Denver Public Schools (DPS) are working with Teach for America to bring illegal teachers into the school district. DPS believes illegal teachers will be able to connect and develop positive relationships with students who are also illegal. DPS estimates 10-to-20 percent of their student population is undocumented.
DPS specifically requested Teach for America provide them teachers with “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” immigration status. This means the individual must have been brought into the U.S. before the age of 16 and maintain a clean criminal record. Individuals with DACA status are not legal citizens, but are authorized to work in the U.S.
“These young men and women bring extraordinary talent to our classroom,” DPS superintendent Tom Boasberg said. “When they see the accomplishments of a young man like Alejandro (an illegal) and he’s their teacher with such ability and enthusiasm, I think he brings tremendous hope,” Boasberg said.

The Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform said it’s deeply concerned about DACA teachers, as many do not attend college or necessary teacher training programs.
