The American settlers beat the British in a war to get the land and form a new country. You will have to ask the British who owned it before them.
The working word is "originally".
Recently I posted an article on here that says the original Americans came over a land bridge from Asia 25,000 years ago into what is now Alaska. And the land in North America has certainly changed ownership many times in the last 25,000 years. If you want to go back and find out who owned it "originally" good luck. ROFLMAO.
