F A Church hardware is in the process of closing

they should consider building a wall down the middle of the store

rent out one side of the space to help pay for their costs

they could use the other half for a 'smaller' hardware store in order to stay open

This and I see Miller's up the road is for sale. That leaves Valu as the last "hardware" store around here unless you head down to Penn Yan. With places like Walmart, Lowes, even Tractor Supply providing a lot of what Church's does I'm glad they lasted this long. Best of luck to them.

How does a smaller store with fewer offerings help profits? The two employees are working 60 hours a week, and it can't be run by a single person. Not to mention the capital costs of conversion, along with basement access. And who would want to rent 1/2 a store? Al's Inn is for sale with no takers, so it doesn't look like downtown store frontage is a hot commodity. I'm grateful for the run they had,

That would be a reasonable assumption, but no. Between Lowes and Amazon (and I'm guilty of using both) sales were down considerably.

My impression of Valu Hardware is that they only carry the low end of most product lines (power tools and paint, for example).

they can focus on the items that they sell the most

the added rent from the other half could help pay the operating costs

I think the problem was that they didn't have the huge array of items at a big box store: lighting, plants, flooring, cabinets, etc., and even if they somehow offered to offer some of them, they'd never have prices as low. The construction work to create two entrances that meet code for store space no one seems to want is problematic.

Use the same front entrance just create two doors inside that front door

Or one space would use the current front door and the other space could use the back door
