Chemung County may get 1,000 new jobs

Chemung County and state officials are working with two prospects that between them could create 1,000 new jobs in the area.

The county is close to a deal with a major company to locate a distribution center along the Whitewagon Road development site in the town of Chemung, according to County Executive Tom Santulli.

That venture would create about 600 jobs over two years, Santulli said. Empire Zone benefits and the proximity of the future Interstate 86 are among the factors that made the area attractive to that company, he said.

The other prospect is a well-established company involved in the oil and gas exploration industry, Santulli said. If negotiations with that company are successful, it could mean 400 new jobs for the Holding Point industrial park in Horseheads, he said.
