so who are you choosing this year for your electric provider/gas supplier this time?

If we all have different suppliers now, maybe we can find out some actual rates from our current bills, to help us decide what our best options are for the upcoming year.

I tried calling NYSEG and NYSEG Solutions on Friday, but they were both closed for Thanksgiving. I'm going to try again today, I'll let you know what I found out. I should have kept my last bill with the rates from last month from NYSEG but it got in the trash before I realized I needed to save it for comparsion.

I had NYSEG fixed last year.

Ranger, you can go on line and go to NYSEG and registar and find out what your rate is and stuff.
As for figuring out who has the best rate ... NYSEG was as foggy as can be ,no straight answers, wishy washy. I thought maybe they were there to help .... but I think its all greed.....

Ok, this may sound like a really stupid question, but what are we choosing? Is it who supplies our electric through NYSE, or if we choose one of the others, such as energenix, will our bills be from them now and NYSEG will have nothing to do with it?
I am so confused by all this!
The last time I got the thing in the mail to choose I just didn't send it in and stuck with whatever Ihad, which now I am not even sure what that is!!

yes you are choosing who supplies your electric and/or gas, I'm not sure as I have always stayed with NYSEG, but the bills probably always come from whoever the supplier is, but there are always deliver charges as part of your bill because they are using NYSEG lines for delivery.

I called 3 suppliers yesterday to get pricing and choose to stay with NYSEG's variable rate

NYSEG was fixed at .089 variable was .065

NYSEG Solutions was fixed at .083

Energy Co-op of NY was peak at.066 off peak was .054

if you notice the chart I posted yesterday, it has different rates than the ones I got over the phone

It's not easy "voicing your choice" when it's so hard to get the correct rates in the first place.

I hope this helps to save you some headaches, and time waiting for someone to finally answer the phone.

Wasn't it found that the fixed rate was overall cheaper than the variable rate?

Ranger,

are you sure you want variable?

I go with NYSEG fixed rate every year (so far). Our usage works out cheaper that way.

The chart shows that NYSEG fixed is around $0.0969/kWh .

Is this for supply or supply and deliver?

Variable

Last bill had a supply charge of $0.065 for electric.
NYSEG fixed price on the chart you posted was around $0.098
The fixed price is approximately a 50% increase from the variable. The price of electricity will usually stay low/constant for the 9 months of the year (Sept-May) as these are not the summer months or high demand.
I would rather pay a 50% reduction for 9 months and take a small risk that the summer rates may increase but they would still have to increase greater than 50% before the 9 month savings would be erased.

The economy is slowing and the price should stay constant or decline.

I read an article saying that NYSEG told the PSC that people chose the fixed price when "Voice your Choice" first came out but most people did not understand the confusing process and just let it go into the default rate which was the fixed price. I believe that the default rate is now the variable rate as the PSC wanted to see if people fell back on the default or if they actually chose their price.

The price that I would be more concerned with is the price of natural gas. The price of natural gas spiked from Katrina and still has not gone down. The price of natural gas is trading at $5.805 down from $15 during Katrina. Ask NYSEG why natural gas has not gone down the same amount?

Heating oil trading @ $1.51
Oil down @ $43

Our house is totally electric. It heats up quickly. We keep thermostat at 68. Every room has its own thermostat so we can turn off heat in unused rooms. I have hung velvet curtains in open doorways that can be shut to keep out drafts. The reason I say drafts is that we have a multi- level "open style" home. We are well insulated and have vinyl siding, new windows and the like which took a few years to have done, but it makes a world of difference in the warmth inside. I do miss having a fireplace but realize that in the past the heat went up the chimney. But, they are beautiful and would still love to have one.

I chose variable the first year and kept track of the rate compared to the fixed price. My variable rate was always way lower than the fixed price. I have since continued with the variable rate.

Must be expensive to heat with electric.
Do you have a day/night meter?

Do you have a pond near the home?

A glass enclosure keeps most of the homes heating from going up the chimney flue.

I was thinking that it may be less expensive if you had a geothermal heat pump to heat the home. If you know someone that has a backhoe then the installation cost would be far less. The heat pump should lower your bills by 50%-80% depending on your usage. The heat pump could be used to cool the home in the summer and also be used to heat the domestic hot water thereby eliminating an electric hot water tank.
