The biggest problem is the "fire numbers" around Branchport!
Go by the fire # period.....my thought.
Around Branchport there are two 1.5 mile sections of Route 54A with the same "fire numbers"
. (Numbers in the range of 3421 to 3736)
These numbers occur around the firehouse area and around the Camp Good Days area. Both of these are officially on "Rt. 54A".
Because of this, "3680 Rt.54A" could be near the firehouse or near Camp Good Days, a couple of miles apart! The postal service, police, fire and ambulance crews and dispatchers should know of this duplication of numbers, but often do not! It can, and has caused delays in response.
I hear that this problem occurred because a universal "grid system" is used to establish fire numbers and internet map number systems. I guess because Rt.54A twists around, both of these road sections lie within the same grid areas, so get identical numbers! But the numbers can't be changed, that would screw up the whole system. The only solution seems to be to change the official road names.
This and several other problems with the area's road names are spelled out in the following site, along with a proposal for a solution:http://www.jerusalem-ny.org/minutes/2008_min/Address_Proposal_6_18_08.pdf
The above site is one of those annoying "pdf" sites. But a regular site with the text - but lacking maps can be found here:http://126.96.36.199/search?q=cache:wT_...clnk&cd=1&gl=us
