To me they are still the greatest band ever. You don't have to love all their music, but no one can deny their influence on music in general and what others tried to copy. Even Freddie Mercury of Queen said the Beatles were his greatest inspiration and influence on his writing style.
Their wide ranging style was never heard or seen before. Georges rockabilly guitar style which was the rage at the time in the States was put to new types of music. Then you had the John and Paul ego battle, which emerged very early after initial commercial success. They were both awesome song writers, and singers. To me it's a miracle they stayed together as long as they did but they knew where their bread was buttered. When they left Capitol and formed Apple records I thought that was a good sign but it didn't really last too long.
Always felt bad for George he was an integral part of the band and a great songwriter in his own right, but couldn't get more than one or two songs on an LP with John and Paul being there. Sort of like Roger Taylor of Queen with Freddie and Brian May writing so many songs.
But, in the end, George whipped them all he had the hottest wife BY FAR lol.
The proof is in the pudding as my Mum used to say:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzkhOmKVW08
