Got squeaky hardwood floors. Jammed some plastic shims on top of one of the joists, and that seemed to help. Ran a few screws up from underneath, and that helped, too, but the screws have to be just the right length. I'm going to redo some of them tomorrow using fender washers so they won't pop through the top layer of flooring.

Anybody ever deal with squeaks successfully? I think I'm on the right track, but just thought I'd better ask.

that's about you're only solution, short of taking up the floor and starting over. When harwoods dry out over many years, they shrink just a bit, but that's all it takes. It could be in the subfloor also, the fastners they have today are better, but that doesn't help your situation.

If you know where, you can try a little dry graphite in the joints.

Hose down the floor with the garden hose, the wood will tighten right up and be solid as a rock.....

Don't forget to plug in a 1000 w halogen light, so you can see what you're doing, and to raise the thrill level. Before you start, have several electric heaters and fans going, so you can dry everything. Go barefoot, so you don't get your shoes wet. Call 911 before you start, so you can get quick response to the incipient emergency.

This reminds me of an associated problem, and its solution: Driving the screws up from below, one sometimes pops up through the floor surface. This is indeed a problem.

Since I drive six or ten screws at a time before going upstairs to check my work, I have a hard time knowing exactly which screw I see peeping through up above. When I go back down, which one should I back out and reset?

Solution: I suggest that anyone else with this problem merely run a wire from the nearest outlet to the visible screw tip. using an alligator clip to attach the wire to the screw. Then go back downstairs and, using another wire connected to a good ground, touch the screw heads one at a time until you find the right one.

Somebody try this and let me know how it works out.

Thats what children are for. Its never too early to start them on a lifelong love of science and the basics of electrical properties. Trust me, in the future they'll laugh about it and thank you for it.
And really, therapy is cheaper than a carpenter.

If you hold the end of a light bulb in your mouth, it will actually light up when you hit the right screw...
