During Freeland's administration (I believe) BMW was considering the Sylvania building. They asked for tax incentives to locate here, and were denied. They built the plant in the Carolinas.

Not sure how much canal traffic can be generated when it costs so much to operate a boat nowadays.

There were a number of tracks into and out of the Village at one time. Oak st had at least two tracks. The Lehigh Valley RR had a right of way and a freight station where they are now proposing a Village hall. Fast foward, along came trucks and better highways and most freight left the railroad. At one time new automobiles were shipped into the Village by rail rather than truck.

Now with the cost of fuel going up the RR's are seeing some of the freight traffic return. The RR servicing this area is doing quite well as business has increased.

As for the canal, more nostaglia than practicality. A large barge could piggyback a number of shipping containers, or bulk goods and the saving in fuel might off set the cost of shipping,

Diesel is at an all time high. Individual trucks going long and short distances burn up a lot of fuel plus the cost of maintaining the roads etc. Could the truck traffic be reduced, taking pressure off the need for oil? Possibly we will see that this summer as you travel the Tway.

I believe they have tried to interest big firms into leasing or renting the warehouse space at the SAD for storage and distribution centers. Some of the canneries over in Wayne Co, now closed were used by a grocery chain for warehousing at one point.

Have something along the lines of Alex Bay's "Pirates' Weekend".

Too bad it would have provided many jobs. When Sylvania first came here there were taxes owed on the property. A prominent businessman button holed a number of other successful business people and they all chipped in and paid off the lien.

Tax incentives today are a matter of record.

Perhaps there were other factors as well that led to BMW locating elsewhere.

Thanks for the ideas!

I'll be back later this week with lots of new ideas and leads and contacts and will look through this for more detail.

Loads to come, and remember we have a team (small, but dsedicated) of economic development/tourism professionals around here and all of us could use the help!

Bob

Today is Wednesday, spaghetti day.

If barilla was willing to build in leroy, maybe we could tempt another italian pasta company to move to the area...

http://www.alibaba.com shows these other pasta companies...

http://www.alibaba.com/countrysearch/IT-suppliers/Pasta.html

Pasta has a generally cheap price per pound at retail so it makes sense for pasta to be manufacutred within reasonable reach of its market.

I'd bet that a Civil War reenactment in Academy Square, or other fairly large area, would draw lots of folks. The one at Genesee Country Village always packs the place.

BOB, you need to get together with local realtors and come up with an active list of available commercial properties and put them in this NY state economic development site and building locator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.nylovesbiz.com/NY_SiteFinder/default.asp

Seneca county only shows 3 sites including the dump, deer run and the army depot.

IT IS your job to promote Seneca Falls Specifically - please get on this.

"Not sure how much canal traffic can be generated when it costs so much to operate a boat nowadays."

Per ton/mile, water is the cheapest way to ship. Whether it's cheaper overall depends on where it's coming from or going to.
