Mystery lovers might enjoy the Louise Penny "Inspector Gamache" series I just finished. Set in modern-day Quebec, they are set in a tiny village called Three Pines (most of the time) and they are really wonderful. Very Christie-esque but with a modern twist. The characters are nicely drawn and I like the Canadian setting - reminds me of Alaska with short days during long winters and long days during short summers!
I just started Salt: A World History by Mark Kurlansky.

Went to the bookstore today and spent a small fortune! Josh got a Julia Child biography & Mastering the Art of French Cooking along with a couple of other books. I picked up the Keith Richards autobiography "Life", and another memoir called "Running the Books" about a Harvard grad who becomes a prison librarian. (I've had my eye on Running the Books for months & I'm very excited.) I also picked up "Damn You, Scarlett O'Hara", about Vivien Leigh & Lawrence Olivier. Looks like a good, juicy, gossipy read.

You bet! The other 2 Josh bought are "Barnum Brown: The man who discovered Tyrannosaurus Rex" by Lowell Dingus & Mark A. Norell and "The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration" by Isabel Wilkerson.
We've committed to doing a lot more reading this year, and to broadening our horizons a bit. Josh reads biographies and geology almost exclusively, so he's moving out into other areas. (He's currently reading "Uncommon Grounds: The History of Coffee and How it Change Our World" by Mark Pendergrast".) I do so much reading & research for work that when I read for pleasure I tend toward mystery/suspense fiction so I'm incorporating more biographies, memoirs, and general non-fiction.

I just started Anthony Bourdain's new book, Medium Raw. Hilarious and not even 20 pages in.
PT- I read a really great book not that long ago, both autobiographies. One called Under and Alone, about a ATF agent who infiltrates the Mongols motorcycle club, freaking amazing. You made me think of it because this man actually becomes the treasurer.
I have to mention this one too though, it was called Gang Leader for a Day, by Sudhir Venkatesh. It was about a student at the University of Chicago who follows the Black Kings in Chicago. I couldn't put it down. It was really fascinating.

Awesome! Thanks for the recommendations. I can't believe I still have Bourdain's books on the "to read" list. I'm such a fan but I haven't read the books yet!
I almost bought "Omnivore's Dilemma" but food books feel like work right now b/c of the breakfast in the classroom project I'm working on, so I've been avoiding them in my pleasure reading!

Pasttense: The Louise Penny book "Bury Your Dead" about both Samuel Champlain and Inspector Gamache is her best so far, IMO. And I am using The Warmth of Other Suns for a book club program next year. Wonderful book, and hard to condense into a 25 minute presentation. You and Josh should try Ian Frazier's Travels In Siberia or his earlier On The Rez about life today on the Pine Ridge South Dakota Reservation. Can't praise those two books enough. Happy Reading. Ann

I thought Bury Your Dead was excellent. I loved Still Life (#1) & Bury Your Dead the very best of all of them. I read them all in about 7 weeks. There is a mystery bookstore here in Houston - Murder by the Book - that I just love. They have introduced me to lots of new writers. Jack Kerley (published in the UK, hard to get here) and Martin Walker (Bruno & The Dark Vineyard) stand out. They have tons of great author book signings, too. I was lucky enough to meet Jack Kerley and Jeff Lindsay (Dexter novels).
I'll add those other two books to our list. Thanks for the recommendations!

Just downloaded Room on the recommend of a friend. Haven't started it yet - a little heavy for summer reading.
I'm also dying to read The Yiddish Policeman's Union by Michael Chabon.

Well, I can promise I'll never read anything by Glen Beck ... but I do love Patterson. Never got into the Women's Murder Club stuff, but I do like Alex Cross now and again.
Right now I'm re-reading some old Alex Delaware mysteries by Jonathan Kellerman. I still have to read "Life" by Keith Richards, too. That might be a fun poolside read for the summer.
