I have heard read a lot lately of people calling on Bush to boycott the opening of the Olympics, yesterday Nancy Pelosi, who shares the same view on China's human rights violations as does Bush, called him to boycott just the opeing ceremony. Today 15 House members called on him to do so. They are not calling for the athletes to do so. I would not agree with boycotting the Olympics by the athletes, but do agree that Bush should boycott the opening.

House members ask Bush to skip the Beijing Olympic Games
Posted: 12:12 AM ET
WASHINGTON (CNN) — Fifteen U.S. House members asked President Bush Tuesday not to attend the Olympic Games in Beijing to protest China’s human rights records.

The call follows comments from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who said Tuesday morning that Bush should boycott the August 8 opening ceremony.

President Bush has said he intends to meet China’s president during a trip to see the Olympics. Bush didn’t elaborate on what issues he might bring up, but his administration has accused China, a major U.S. trade partner, of human rights abuses.

In a letter, the House members — 14 Democrats and one Republican — urged the president to “reconsider” his decision.

My only concern if Georgie snubs the opening is any payback on our atheletes. I don't think he should go, but then again I don't think China should have been allowed to host them to begin with. I unsderstand the IOC's ideology behind it, but it hasnt worked so far.

Good question about the retaliation on our athletes if Bush did not go. I would hope they would be smarter than that, the world's eyes will be watching.

Report: Sarkozy sets conditions for Olympic ceremony attendance
Posted: 06:04 AM ET
(CNN) — French President Nicolas Sarkozy will not attend the opening ceremony of this summer’s Olympic Games unless China opens dialogue with the Dalai Lama, a French cabinet minister told the French newspaper Le Monde on Saturday.

The French secretary of state for human rights, Rama Yade, said Sarkozy has three “essential” conditions for attending the ceremony: the end of violence against Tibetans and the release of political prisoners; clarifying the Tibetan events, and opening dialogue with the Dalai Lama.

Sarkozy’s office told CNN Saturday that it was trying to confirm the accuracy of the report.

Absolutely not should the U.S. boycott the opening ceremonies these athletes have trained almost half of their young lives for the olympics. The opening ceremonies are very emotional for the athletes and their families,to have that taken away in the name of politics is not right.
Maybe the U.S. should boycott products made in China and concentrate on having jobs here back in America,to even consider boycotting the opening ceremonies is a slap in the face to all our young athletes

That is my biggest concern, the athletes. They have trained hard and this is a great feat on their part to make it to the Olympics. I would hate to see them lose out because of a boycott or as someone mentioned, have it be held against them.

I remember when the US boycotted the Soviet Olympics because of the Soviets crackdown on human rights.

Tibet was never part of China. Not until China came in and slaughtered Buddhist monks by the thousands and ran their government (Tibet had no army, only monks and the people), into exile. Many Buddhist Monks stayed and have endured death and persecution at the hands of the Chinese ever since.

China needs to get out of Tibet and to restore the Dali Lama.
We need to back the people of Tibet by boycotting the Olympic games.
If a Chinese athelete pulls a muscle and loses face for China, he/she might wind up as an organ "donor". But China is a big player in financil world markets/polluter/emerging world military power.

They need to understand the world will not allow them to execute people accused and convicted of capital crimes. With a 99.9% conviction rate on little or no evidence. Usually just the charges are more than enough for an execution and organ harvesting to take place.

Harvesting organs from executed Chinese "criminals" is a multi-billion dollar business each year for the Chinese. Rich folks from all over the world go there, by passing our own and Europes long waiting lists for transplant.
In China, there is only a week or so wait for a liver, a heart, kidney. All come from the Chinese Governments' havesting of organs from condemned prisoners.

FREE TIBET!

The USA should join the boycott. Our atheletes should understand and back that decision.

We should support the boycott. China is killing buddhist monks in Tibet and repressing most of their people with a one party rule. They should let Tibet be free. Tibet is not a part of China they over ran it and took it's freedom. Boycott the China Olympics.

Didn't bother this administration and others when we borrowed millions of $$$$$$$ from China to finance this Middle East war.

Lets see, war is patriotic, but the olympics aren't??

War is used to fight our enemies, but athletic competition is in question.

REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes war is a necessity.

Like when a "people", an extremist population from all over the middle east, knock down 20 acres of sky scrapers in New York City and kill hundreds of innocent passengers in hijacked airliners rammed not only into New York City and that Hero's Field in PA, but the US Pentagon as well.

I don't like the way business all over the World have flocked to China';s cheap labor. I cannot do anything about that. Or the borrowing of money by the CONGRESS of the USA ( get it straight Brightday) Congress borrows the money, NOT the administration.

Some things you must fight back against. This was one of those things.

Now go vote democrat and get that big bad bully bush outta there and see what changes.

NOTHING WILL. No matter who is POTUS. Nothing will change.

"Or the borrowing of money by the CONGRESS of the USA"

The Congress votes on the budget, which always calls for spending more than the government takes in in revenue, but the treasury issues the the bonds that are sold to make up the difference, and the treasury sec. is appointed by the pres., and serves at his pleasure.

They're all willing conspirators in the downfall of the US$. The country is hopelessy broke; the debt will never be repaid; it can't be; it's too big. Most of the public hasn't figured it out yet, but the government certainly knows it, and doesn't care about anything other than pulling the wool and continuing to get elected.

The only possible plan is to pay it off in worthless dollars, and the plan is going splendidly. The problem is, is that the world is making necessary plans to continue long after the US is a 3rd world country with nukes.

Thanks, US government! Let's have a couple more wars. Ya might as well lay on a few more gigantic farm bills and a few more bridges to nowhere, at this point. Why quit when we're behind?

And remember, all you patriotic citizens, to continue to do your part. This Ponzi scheme can't work unless you keep on electing republicrats.

They can't execute people convicted of capital crimes? Why not? A capital crime is a crime that carries the Death Remedy. What's the point of a remedy that you can't apply?

Oh, I see. That sentence was getting a little too long for you. Well, I guess you needed a rest. Don't worry about punctuation; just scatter it around wherever you like.

My guess would be that there will not be a boycott. Certainly the boycott would be very unfair to the athletes who have trained for years. But for our current President to pull out of the '08 Olympics seems doubtful. He ain't no Jimmy Carter.

Security ‘bubble’ to surround Olympic torch relay in Paris
Posted: 05:43 AM ET
PARIS, France (CNN) — The Olympic flame makes a 17-mile (28 km) tour through Paris Monday, a day after anti-Chinese demonstrators made its journey through London more like running the gauntlet than a celebratory torch relay.

One group has promised “something spectacular” to protest the torch relay through Paris.

Some French torch bearers are expected to wear protest buttons, and the Paris mayor ordered a banner over City Hall that reads “Paris City of Human Rights.”

A moving bubble of security forces — on motorcycles, Rollerblades and foot — will surround 80 torch bearers who will carry the modern Olympics’ foremost symbol through the City of Light, starting near the top of the Eiffel Tower and ending about five hours later at the headquarters of the French Olympic Committee.

IOC official: 2008 Games flame may be last to make world tour
Posted: 03:48 AM ET
BEIJING, China (CNN) — As the Olympic torch flew to San Francisco Tuesday, a member of the International Olympic Committee said protests that disrupted the Olympic torch relay in London and Paris may make 2008 the last time such an ambitious global torch relay is attempted.

Anti-Chinese protesters interrupted the relay in London and Paris. Police already have arrested protesters in the torch’s next destination — San Francisco — even though the relay is not scheduled to begin there until Wednesday.

Kevan Gosper, a member of the International Olympic Committee and chairman of its press commission, suggested that the public relations nightmare that has followed the Olympic flame may make 2008 the last year for a global torch relay.

“I’m a firm believer that we had the right template in the first place, that the torch simply should go from Olympia, Greece to the host country,” he said. “I would expect that the Olympic committee will review that template.”

Yes. We should boycott on a number of human rights issues, and because of the occupation and continuing supression of Tibet by the Red Chinese.

Dalai Lama welcomes China's offer for talks with his envoy 6 minutes ago

DHARMSALA, India - The Dalai Lama is welcoming China's offer to meet his envoy, but he wants serious talks to reduce resentment about Chinese rule in Tibet.

The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader says he has yet to receive detailed information about the offer, but that talks would be good.

He said the two sides need to explore the root of the problems that have sparked unrest in the Himalayan region and seek solutions through talks. He was speaking to reporters on Saturday after his return from a two-week visit to the United States.
