I hope she didn't waste too much of her time in high school.

I had my GED in hand before my high school class graduated. When I applied to college, they translated my GED score into a 4.0 high-school GPA. If I had known it would be that easy, I would have quit school sooner.

I can count up to 20 when I'm not wearing shoes. I put on quite a show at job interviews.

I'm smarter than some of them, surely. But now you're off topic.

How did you do that, she had to be 18 before she could even take it?

I don't think he was. I think he turned 18 before his class graduated. His could have turned 18 as early as Jan. '68, and still have been in the class of '68.

I really wish I'd done that. High school was like prison for me, as you probably remember. I'll bet I could have whacked the GED, too. I did take some CLEP tests in the navy, and have 1 year of college credits just from that.

I believe in those days the age requirement may have been 16. I turned 18 on June 3, 1968 just a couple of weeks before you graduated, so I must have taken the tests before that, maybe in April or May. I remember receiving my scores in the mail before your graduation.

I quit high school the previous October (1967).

What I said about using my GED to get into college is true. They had some kind of score equivalency formula that set me at 4.0.

Hold the phone there, sweetheart. This from the NYS GED web site:

"Anyone who is a New York State Resident and who is 16 years of age or older (with certain restrictions) on the day of testing may be eligible to take the GED Tests. For more detailed information on eligibility and the required forms you may need, please refer to the eligibility requirements."

I can't find out what the restrictions are because the web site is damned near incomprehensible. It must have been designed by a high-school dropout.

http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/ged/f-a-q.shtml

Given my subsequent experience with universities (no problem with admission, graduated with honors, went on to get two advanced degrees, won scholarships and other financial awards, etc.) I would have no problem advising anyone who doesn't like high school to quit. For me it's just a question of whether a rational evaluation by a student leads to the conclusion that h.s. is the best use of his or her time.

If you ever decide to up your ante, you can probably get more credit for some of your life and work experience. It just depends on where you apply. I think Empire State College allows credit for life and work. Stuff like getting your Master's license, for example, might get you some credits.
