A total eclipse of the Moon occurs during the night of Wednesday, February 20/21, 2008. The entire event is visible from South America and most of North America as well as Western Europe, Africa, and western Asia. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon's disk can take on a dramatically colorful appearance from bright orange to blood red to dark brown and (rarely) very dark gray.

An eclipse of the Moon can only take place at Full Moon, and only if the Moon passes through some portion of Earth's shadow. The shadow is actually composed of two cone-shaped parts, one nested inside the other. The outer shadow or penumbra is a zone where Earth blocks some (but not all) of the Sun's rays. In contrast, the inner shadow or umbra is a region where Earth blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.

If only part of the Moon passes through the umbra, a partial eclipse is seen. However, if the entire Moon passes through the umbral shadow, then a total eclipse of the Moon occurs. For more information on how, what, why, where and when of lunar eclipses, see the special web page lunar eclipses for beginners.

Good luck viewing it. Have you checked the weather forecast for tomorrow night?

Wednesday Night
Mostly cloudy. Snow showers likely in the evening...then a chance of snow showers after midnight. Accumulation 1 to 2 inches possible. Lows around 10 above. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph...becoming west. Chance of snow 60

Without checking the paper or an almanac, I do know that a full moon rises generally at about 6:00 or 6:30 pm. The moon rises at roughly 15 degrees per hour. So look for it at about 50 or 60 degrees high in the east. But like I said, we're due for clouds tomorrow night.

I would get as far away from any light pollution as possible.

That's a good point, which means get away from Seneca Falls, since you have Auburn directly to the east. Think of heading south along the lake maybe...

I am in the middle of the FingerLakes National Forest. My nearest neighbor is way down the hill in Steamburg.

The only lights out here at night, unless I turn one on, are the moon, the stars and your occasional UFO.

;-)

Hoping for clear skies tonight.

I hope it's not cloudy. I missed the meteor showers last year. I think we are always cloudy/foggy at night \:\( Keeping fingers crossed.

Um.. Party at Sky's house? Around 10 \:\)

We're going to give photographing the eclipse a shot - forecast tonight is partly cloudy here, too...that doesn't mean much though - the weather changes constantly and rarely matches the forecast...we'll post them if we get them.
