...Why can't I find you? When did you go away? Was it after mom died, or after we lost the baby? Why do things just seem to get harder, and harder? I dread this time of year...

refocus your thoughts and rather than pity party yourself - try going to Golisano's Childrens Hospital and volunteer. Stop and meet some of the kids. I promise you, you will leave there, run to the mall, and start buying gifts for these young kids with Christmas joy running through your heart. If you're not a kid-fanatic, visit a nursing home - again, there you can volunteer just your time in a sing along - and soon you will make a friend and find that they deserve something more than you will ever need. Don't let Christmas find you - go find Christmas. Honestly, you can contact your local Social Service dept - and find a family in need. All this does put your personal losses into perspective. It's awful to lose the ones we love - but sometimes it's even more worse to watch the ones we love suffer. Have a Christmas Heart and find a charity that will fulfill your love of the holiday spirit. Merry Christmas!

No that's me silly...just ask Just Askin'.

Seriously though you had some great suggestions. But sometimes you can't force yourself to feel something you don't. Don't feel bad if you don't feel all the holiday tingle.

I went to Golisano's Childrens Hospital - and let me tell you... whatever has brought you down...whatever it was that made you feel sorry for yourself, all changes when you leave there. You smile at what these kids left you with (they honestly can see a bright light when doom seems the forecast). Honestly, I didn't set out to just go there to make myself feel better. I went with a friend to visit a mutual friends sick child - at first I felt uncomfortable - but I am sooooo glad that I went. Afterwards, we stopped at the mall, bought some toys for some of the special kids there and sent them to the hospital. Kind of brought that drudgery of Christmas shopping into perspective. It wasn't about spending money on what YOU HAVE to buy - but more fun to "spend the thought" of making a little kid HAPPY. It was a great experience. I've been feeling good about it for the past couple of days.

Well I tend to wear the smaller ones. I don't like the granny pants. I also don't ever go without panties unless I am wearing a skirt or dress.

Geez, Yetta, if your sense of humor is missing in action to that degree, then no wonder Christmas sucks for you. I still think that your blues are partly due to SAD. Some are diagnosed with it, and some are nearly incapacitated by it. Docs say that only some are affected by it, but I think we all get it, to some degree, in the North.

If you can't go south for a while, then at least get one of those natural spectrum lights; they are known to help:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_affective_disorder

Negative ion generators also might help, and are cheaper than the purpose-built SAD light systems, but the electronic ones invariably crap out, and produce ozone, also. I think the lamps below are a better alternative, and I'm getting one for myself, and one as a gift. They're on sale now:

http://www.saltlampcreations.com/

This is interesting, too.

http://www.apollohealth.com/full-spectrum_controversy.html

When I switched to compact flourescents about 10 years ago, I paid the $ for the high Kelvin temperature bulbs (full spectrum) that mimic sunlight. They're nice, and I've saved money, but the latest studies show that it's the AMOUNT of light, and not the spectrum, that's really important. It just depends on what color you prefer; low Kelvin tends toward yellow, and high toward white. It's cheaper to leave all the lights on with flourescents. Real Deals usually has them, and they put out more lumens per watt. Compacts have electronic ballasts, so you don't get the 60-cycle flicker that you get with many flourescents.

Yeah, yeah, I'm aware that other things can bum one out besides winter-time lack of light, but dealing with that can't hurt, either.

I am thinking of tanning as well....it does help.

VM...this is an issue for me, true enough. It's more like bad relationships and bad things that have happened in the past couple of years....i.e, several deaths and such. It will pass.....the holidays are always hard for me. I know that and I know I have to deal with it. I have brought alot on myself for putting up with things that I should not have. Sometimes when you love someone you tend to try to see a brighside no matter how much it hurts. I miss my family as well.....I have a lot going on right now with trying to pack.....planning a move.....my job....and all those things that people deal with everyday. I know I have it better than some and I need to keep telling myself that. I appreciate your advice and will heed it. You have a blessed Christmas.

I'm sort of in the same boat. No parents, no woman, no kids, my sister lives out of state, and my brother, who lives here, also doesn't have kids. However, I've had more time to get used to my situation than you've had, I think.

I'm spending Jan. in Panama, where there is not only sunlight, but it's warm and I'm much more inclined to get out and walk daily, which both help my mood. I think the South will be good for you, too, not only because there's more sun, but because it's a fresh start for you. You have a great Christmas, too, Yetta, and I'm with you in realizing that we have it better than many do.

I wish the best for you..
Some times the choices we make come back to haunt us. When you listen to other people that think they have the answer, then you find out they were wrong.
Don't regret, At the time it's all fun and you wanted to be there....
Then you sit back and realized what you should not have done.

Hey, Yetta, if you find a cure, package it. You can make a fortune. In fact, I'll take a dozen bottles.
I don't have a degree in psychology, but I'd say you have every right to be sad. You've gone through a lot of loss - mentally and physically.
If you're working on finding ways to fight it, I say GOOD FOR YOU. I hope it works out for the best.
I know I'm not the most popular person on the forum, but it hurts me when I see others truly hurt. I sincerely wish you the best with the depression. Sometimes something as small as a kiss from a pet helps, or a smile from a real friend.

And....one day you will sit back and know what you have done. You wish the best for me after what you did to me????? That's priceless. You wish the best for me because you ended up where you wanted to be to begin with.....you came out smelling like a rose when everyone else was hurt.

Oh, I know there's no cure, I was diagnosed with it 5 years ago.
But sometimes being around friends helps. And sometimes not having real friends make it worse. I've been through that one, and it happened right around Christmas.

People have a right to defend themselves. I wouldn't like reading about myself all the time and then have people tell me to lay off when I tried to answer back(eloquently or not). May not make me popular but there are 2 sides to every story and I think both have a right to be heard.

EASY DON'T BUST A STAPLE!
Just think of all the food that will be in the house for the kids after this by-pass,unless your still hideing snacks under your pillow and telling the day care kids there all gone.

Tsk tsk tsk WTL. I remember about 3-4 years ago you were having a hard time with Christmas. Divorce? Someone took the time to loan you her ear and her shoulder. Isn't there any of that left to pass along?

Red, red wine
Go to my head
Make me forget that i
Still need her so

Red, red wine
It`s up to you
All I can do, i`ve done
But mem`ries won`t go
No, mem`ries won`t go

I`d have thought
That with time
Thoughts of her
Would leave my head
I was wrong
And I find
Just one thing makes me forget

Red, red wine
Stay close to me
Don`t let me be alone
It`s tearin` apart
My blue, blue heart

Well the 80's fashions are back...so...who knows who or what is in or out! I saw a girl in a horizontal striped shirt, matching mini skirt and leg warmers. I had a flashback...to Flash Dance....quite traumatic.

Ummm... I never called you specifically for any freakin further gossip about anything...It was my understanding that our phone calls to each other were to gab. Dummy me. It comes up within the course of conversation. AND what gets old is YB saying the same crap over and over, trying to portray the innocent victim to the rest of us forum readers. You misunderstood that one. There is a lot more information that gets volunteered by some that the average forum reader would have no clue to even ask about. As far as not reading....AUGHHH...nevermind.

See this is why things get carried away on here.

I talk with Mums, we are still friends but that's it for now.

Kind of hard to do when you're on crutches. Unlike some people who have immediate miraculous healing powers, I have to work on my recovery every day.
You should pardon my bad mood, but it's hard to be happy and joyful and jumping all over the forums when every step hurts.
I've come a long way in 6 weeks, but I've had to work for every little step forward, and no one to help me.
So you should pardon my bitterness.

Well thanks to Cal, I get to see your response, MN. And if you choose not to have a Merry Christmas, it is nothing off my back. That is a choice you make. I still am allowed to wish "ALL" a Merry Christmas, and MN, you are not "all".

"So you should pardon my bitterness."

No can do. There are people who are worse off than you, who are not bitter. Have a merry Christmas, be thankful to have a life, even if it's not going exactly as planned, and realize that while you're slowly getting better, some are getting worse.

Christmas is the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. That is the real celebration. If you are not a Christian, you shouldn't have to have that shoved down your throat.
Jews celebrate Chanukkah.
Wiccans celebrate the Yule. (Winter Solstice, celebrating the longest night and the blessings of darkness as well as the rebirth of the sun god. (Wicca/Paganism) (Dec. 21))
Then there's Qwanzaa and Ramadan. Nowhere have I seen anyone wish a happy or holy holiday to those who celebrate these days.

Having had knee surgery myself it is possible MotherNature has post op depression plus the fact of frustration of trying to daily simple tasks that are either impossible or difficult to do.
Maybe she doesn't feel Christmas is something to be happy about.
Christmas has turned into this big push to buy, buy, buy and many simple cannot afford to pay for it.
Some people are just lonely at Christmas. What ever the reason no one should be berated for not being happy.

MotherNature this is very true, I am not Christian, I do Yule.
You do not see people say Happy Yule to me unless they are pagan.
And I certainly don't see places like Walmart make a big Yule sale! \:\)

Happy Yule. \:\)

I am not saying MN MUST have a Merry Christmas or even celebrate it. But, her comment to me was not intended to explain that she does not celebrate Christmas or that she is depressed. It was made to try to exact some kind of feeling on me akin to belittlement. It was in response to my saying Merry Christmas all, not specifically to MN. It didn't work.

I have been there when I have not felt like celebrating any holiday and such, last year was rough. I know how that is. I chose to pull myself together for those that I loved, and actually enjoyed the holidays. I am not saying everyone is able to do that, or should be made to.

I have a son overseas this year, his fourth Christmas away, it is rough. For some reason cookie baking this year is my chosen "distraction" from that "roughness", but the ache of wanting that son home is still there.

Also, I have a niece that is a Wiccan, and celebrates Christmas as well. I have never had a conflict with her or any other Wiccan I have ever met. Why would I? It is not always easy to tell who is who on here (ie: Christian vs Wiccan).

So, to correct my earlier statement to include all:

Happy Channukah

Happy Qwanza

Happy Yule

Merry Christmas

and to those I either m issed or am not aware of:

Happy Holidays.

To those of you who are not in the holiday spirit, I wish you peace. I also hope that whatever has got you down, will be clarified, cured, abbreviated...whatever word you would like to choose.

When you are that low, it is not easy to rise up. Still, there is no reason to take it out on others.

I'm not a Christian, either, but it doesn't bother me if they say merry Christmas. I don't figure that the holidays are all about me, or about my beliefs and feelings; it's just a nice time of year, and I know that the sun will return, so I'll celebrate the solstice, as usual, and enjoy the general happy mood people have. I'm already happier, because we've passed the earliest sunset of the year (Dec. 8).

Hey, if Hallmark says to celebrate - why not?
I, too, remember a crappy christmas - the woeth me year. But, I'm getting my life pulled together - my way - and learning to deal with it. I do have to say, that it has gotten ridiculous at the amount of money I'm doling out this year for gifts to people I don't even know! I don't have a problem with gift giving to kids. This is their holiday. But I'm buying for teachers, neighbors, co-workers I don't even like etc...enough already!

Mother Nature - the yucky part of these forums is that I like to keep my anonymity. If I didn't, I would be more than glad to offer you a hand...if you live near me that is. Depression stinks even if it's just the feeling sorry for yourself moment because you can't get around, your bills are piling up or the friggin pressure of finding gifts for that idiot co-worker you have to buy for. This is the first year, of several, that I have not had SAD really bad! Probably because I got a good dose of sunlight on my vacation. However, I'm here on the forums for some forum coffee and a donut if you want to chat...wtl

Solstice is at0108 12/22 EST. Don't get the date wrong for your celebration, or the world will end in awful flaming death, and then we'll all have a miserable Christmas.

I once put off for several years closing a door in my life.
I could think of many reasons for not closing it.
The main reason was fear. Fear of being alone, the unfamiliar,
failure etc....
I cried many nights.
I started healing when I started going out and sitting at night and watching the night sky, being at peace.
One day I forgave myself for not going forward
and I slammed shut that door.
The next door opened and the most wonderful person came into my life.
When you are ready to heal, when you are ready to shut the old door, the new door will open for you too.

It works that way sometimes.

I was just making fun of someone who complains that Christmas is too much about how Christians feel, that the Christian holiday is shoved down her throat, and implies that she feels left out because she is a wiccan who celebrates the solstice. Then she shows that she doesn't even know when the solstice occurs.

So, if she doesn't take her own beliefs that seriously, she shouldn't take Christmas that serously either, and should relax, enjoy the holidays, and quit complaining.

I am a Witch, not a Wiccan either, though I am well versed in Wicca and have taught it plus other beliefs. I have been in covens and grottos. What I have seen many times is people complain or make a big deal out of others faiths and customs.
Next thing you see is a news article some Witch etc.. feels they are being prejudiced against blah blah blah. I tell the students I have had mind their own faith and leave others to theirs. You can't be discriminated against your faith if you don't allow it to happen in the first place. Knowledge is power. Simple education and not pushing your faith on others. Many people after talking to me feel enlightened and have made a new friend.
Simply being myself and people see I believe in my faith.

I like holidays no matter the faith. People create their own saddness around a holiday. They haven't learned to celebrate what they do have, only to morn what they preceive they have lost.
There is nothing wrong with remembering losses but when one lets the past control the now, they are not living and are still losing. I cannot change the past but I sure can shape my future!

For me this year, it is not so much about the past, though there are people I will always miss at Christmas, namely my parents and my best friend who died in a car accident. Not to mention a son serving in Iraq. But, with the holidays here and soon to be over, my surgery looms near.

I will not let it ruin my Christmas, just a little nervous. Not so much over the actual procedure as being given extreme limitations after. I am very independent and I will have to be very dependent for a while after. I have waited a long time for this surgery, now it is almost here. I have a good support network of family and friends. I just have to rely on them, and I am not one to do that so easily.

But, for today, Christmas Eve is here and I will enjoy every minute of tonight at a friend's family celebration. Then, tomorrow the grandchildren and the children here, and I cannot wait to see them opening gifts. I will miss my son dearly as he is unable to come home until spring. I look forward to next year when he will be home for the holidays.

Having recently gone through knee surgery, for once, I have to agree with SBJ. The hardest part for me was letting others do for me (even in the hospital).

I was watching one of many Christmas movies over the weekend, and I heard one of the characters use the title of this thread. Give me a little chuckle.

I hope you find some sunshine in today, Thattabeme.

Solstice is at0108 12/22 EST. Don't get the date wrong for your celebration, or the world will end in awful flaming death, and then we'll all have a miserable Christmas.

Ahhh, VM, I never said I was Wiccan. And my statement about when the Yule is came from the Net. Obviously, it's supposed to be the first day of winter (the longest night of the year).

Upon reading again, I see that you didn't say that. Sorry, it's a density problem.

Solstice varies according to year and location. We had the earliest sunset Dec. 8, and the latest sunrise will be about Jan.4. The wheel turns, and spring is coming!

Hope you're feeling better each day, and happy holidays!

Ramadan is not a day, it's a month. And it ended about two months ago.

And quaanza is 6 days. Chanukkah is 8 days and was last week or the week before. What's your point? I couldn't find a date for Ramadan.
