Reports of Hopkins replacing Boeheim surface
Updated: 5/16/2007 5:05 AM
By: Ryan Dean

For 31 years, Coach Jim Boeheim has manned the sideline for the Syracuse Orange. During that time, he's won more than 700 games and brought the University a national championship.

For years, fans have wondered how long Boeheim will stay at SU and when he retires who will take his spot. Well according to ESPN.com, one of those questions has been answered.

Former Orange player and longtime assistant Mike Hopkins will take over when the Hall of Fame coach retires. However, there's no timetable on when Boeheim will step down.

Hopkins played under Boeheim and has sat by his side for 12 years. He's credited for recruiting talented players such as Gerry McNamara.

So, what do you think? Did SU make the right decision, or should they go outside the program to find the next head coach?

"He's been an assistant for years, SU player. I don't think it's a bad idea. Not at all."

"Now we got a coach who will be the coach for another 30 years. If we don't keep him, we'll lose him to another program."

All the fans we spoke to at Tully's in Syracuse liked the idea. If Hopkins does in fact does take over, the Orange faithful believe he will have no problems being successful.

"I think Hopkins has proven himself. He's a great recruiter. Players like him, and I think this is a great transition."

SU has not made a formal announcement, and the 62-year-old Boeheim may decide to stick around for quite some time. ESPN.com reports that Hopkins and Syracuse University are working on putting the plans in writing.

I agree, and cant imagine not seeing J.B. on the bench. But if the coasch is ok with it and SU does want to get Hopkins inked into a contract, cool, better for recruitment issues and the eventual transition.

Good point. I like Hopkins and hope to still be around when he does take over the program when Coach B retires.

This is a great move. Now there will be no speculation, no rumors. Hop is a quality recruiter. This totally brings back the opportunity for Gerry to start his coaching. Which I think we will see happen sooner rather than later.

CRAP!
Crushing Loss
Rautins tears ACL, MCL; out for season
Friday, August 24, 2007
By Mike Waters Staff writer
Syracuse University junior Andy Rautins suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a partially torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee while playing for Canada in the FIBA Americas tournament in Las Vegas on Wednesday and will miss the 2007-08 season.
Rautins father, Leo, who is the coach of the Canadian team, said an MRI taken on Thursday revealed the full extent of the damage to the knee.
Rautins' knee buckled as he rushed to defend an opponent during Canada's opening-round 75-67 loss to Brazil.
"Yeah, it's the worst, although for the worst, it could have been worse," Leo Rautins said in a telephone interview from Las Vegas after Canada's 80-73 win over Venezuela on Thursday. "The ACL's gone. Completely severed. The medial collateral's partially torn, but there's no structural damage and no cartilage damage. That's a good thing. With this, it's a tough pill to swallow, but at least you can heal."
Rautins, a 6-foot-5 guard, had been in the middle of an incredible summer of international play. He led Canada in scoring at the World University Games in Brazil, earning a spot on the Senior National Team roster for the FIBA
tournament, which has 10 nations competing for two berths in the 2008 Olympics.
In a warmup event last week in Puerto Rico, Rautins was Canada's second-leading scorer. He helped Canada to surprising wins over Puerto Rico and Argentina.
"He was having a great summer," Rautins said. "This tournament meant everything to him. He was really determined to help us qualify."
Rautins said recovery time for his son would be in the range of six months.
"The key right now is we're going to determine when we're going to do the surgery, who's going to do the surgery and what procedure," Leo Rautins said.

Bummer. But seriously is it going to be that big a loss with this class coming in? He is redshirting and will be back next year.

He's a kid who started or came off the bench in
a world of emotion with his 3 point shot !! That will
absolutely be missed.

Andy was hardened, fire of the fire player, where everyone is a star !!!

We'll lose that aspect, but we'll know in short order who the qualified are to fill that role.

As these kids get fortified and solidified, it will be good for them and their future, but Andy could end up the 6th or 7th man again next year.

Plus, SU has an entering 2008 class, who knows how that will effect the broad picture .

What a freaking game!!!!!!!! It is nice to be able to counter the freshman mistakes with such an awesome array of offensive weapons. Just imagine how good these kids will be when they get a little more experience under their belts.

Man I'm trying SO hard to not get to excited , but watching this young team, and the talent. holy crap, the best part, so far is it really looks like they are already having funand jellin as a team, they seem to know each others moves and such. With this new point guard Flynn, and a 6-11 swing guard/forward, man what a sweet jumper Green has...this is a team FULL of major talent.

I know what you mean with tying not to get too excited. All three teams they have played have been veteran teams with some pretty decent talent and these kids showed no fear or intimidation. I think they have a good shot at beating Ohio State if they take care of the ball better then those first two games.

'Cuse has some talented young blood - looking like serious contenders in a couple of years if not sooner. We'll see how they do against OSU.

Maybe - maybe not. Having the wind let out of their sails might wake them up. They took horrific shots and did a lousy job defending and 17 turn overs (mostly unforced) were ridiculous.

they showed their age.. someone put a lid on the basket, plus bad bad shots...I actually think a loss this early might be good for these cocky freshman.. lets see how our H.O.F. coach molds them now.. and lets not forget the opponents were in the BIG dance last year.

Syracuse, NY (AP) -- Three top rated high school basketball players have signed national letters of intent to play at Syracuse next season, the school announced Tuesday.

Mookie Jones, Kris Joseph and James Southerland are all forwards and make up a recruiting class that is ranked among the top 30 nationally.

Jones, 6-foot-6, is from Peekskill and is a member of the three-time defending Class A champion Peekskill Red Devils. As a junior last season, he averaged 22.6 points and 11 rebounds. Rivals.com has rated Jones as the 40th best player in the nation in the 2008 recruiting class.

The 6-foot-7 Joseph is ranked No. 41 overall by Scout.com after averaging 18.8 points and 5.0 assists a game last season for Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C. -- the high school alma mater of Orange all-time leading scorer Lawrence Moten. He is the younger brother of Michigan State sophomore Maurice Joseph.

Southerland, 6-foot-7, is from Bayside and this year is attending Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass., the same prep school as current Syracuse players Paul Harris and Sean Williams. Last season, Southerland averaged 22.5 points and 11.3 rebounds a game for Cardozo High School in the Queens.

It's so predictable when you rely on freshen as much as this team does. Nobody wants to play defense cuz they don't recognize its value yet. They still believe they can just light it up on the offensive end and still win.

But man, they're fun to watch. This is the type of team that JB can do wonders with-but I'd hate to have to deal with his practice sessions this coming week! That zone will work itself into a pretty formidable weapon by mid-season. We've got the size again to be effective with it.....

"Hey! A Syracuse center can score!
Posted by Mike Waters November 30, 2007 11:01AM
Categories: Breaking News
OK, OK, I know that just about everybody who played in Wednesday's Syracuse-UMass no-defense-allowed game scored a ton of points, but what SU center Arinze Onuaku accomplished still deserves a mention.

Arinze Onuaku didn't get this tip to go in against UMass, but he did do something that no Syracuse center had accomplished in almost eight years.Onuaku, a redshirt sophomore, scored a career-high 20 points on 7-for-10 field goal shooting and 6-for-12 free throw shooting. It was the first time a Syracuse center had scored 20 or more points since the 1999-2000 season.
The last time a center scored more than 20 points was on Feb. 16, 2000, when Etan Thomas had 21 against Pittsburgh. Let that sink in for a moment.

Since Thomas graduated in 2000, Syracuse has had four primary players start at center. Jeremy McNeil's high was six points, which he did twice. Billy Celuck had 10 points in a game on two occasions. Craig Forth started from 2001-02 through the 2004-05 season. His career high was 18, coming against Missouri on Jan. 12, 2004.

And Darryl Watkins, the starting center for the last two seasons, had a career high of 18 as well. His 18-point game came against St. Bonaventure on Dec. 30, 2006.

Syracuse sports information director Pete Moore gets the assist for looking up those numbers."

LOL!

the problem i have with syracuse, roared it's ugly head again the other night, is when they have a lead late in the game (i think they were up like 83-80 at the time) they are still pumping 3's like they are trying to get back in the game, why not work it in low and make a 2 and get back on defense...the player shooting the 3 never follows his shot any more, so there fore they don't get the rebound...just pathetic, no disaplin(sp?)

It was a weak defensive night, a one and done offense that luckily made some key threes. I love the 6'11" three point killer! Luckily their all American senior was ill and had an off night, or those four (or five ) missed charity balls would have put them on top. jmo.

Well they tried to lose last night but managed to pull it out! Nice to see a big man in the paint dominating again... let alone our 6'11" outside shooter! I'm not looking forward to some of the "older" teams .. like G-Town.

yes nice to see them protect a lead for a change, by not taking 3 pointers that they don't need, those are killers especially when they don't follow the misses an get a rebound...one of the best games i've seen from the 'cuse in a long time, hopefully they can build on this

Another tough one today, excellent article in yesterdays Auburn paper about the lack of fight in some of these young kids. The analogy used was Melo, if ya elbowed him or knocked him around he'd get mad and score 25 points and just take over the game, and he made everyone around him play better. This team lacks that. Devo had that fight in him and now no one has taken the lead. I watched for it in todays game, instead of getting angry they would just put their heads down and continue playing. I wish I could find that article it was really good.

Found it:

Edge not there for Orange this yearBy Ryan Day

Friday, January 18, 2008 9:33 AM EST

Remember Carmelo Anthony?
The smile. The headband. The game.

Nobody has forgotten.

'Melo had the entire package as a player - he could score inside and outside, he was a tenacious rebounder and he made all his teammates better by just being on the court.

But 'Melo had something else. Behind the swagger, there was something darker.

There was an edge.

Every time he laced up the sneakers, Carmelo Anthony was the best player on the court. He could have easily gotten by on natural ability alone. But that wasn't enough for him.

Opponents learned quickly - don't tick off Carmelo.

If you talked smack in his general direction, 'Melo would torch you. If you threw an elbow, he'd throw one back, then proceed to score the game's next 10 points.

Basically he was the New England Patriots before they were. A unmotivated Anthony was better than you. A fired up Anthony was better than you and was he going to make it his mission to embarrass you.

In the 2003 East Regional final, Oklahoma's Kevin Bookout body-checked Anthony out of bounds while the referees weren't looking.

What happened next was as predictable as a Bill Belichick press conference.

Carmelo dunked on Bookout's head, then scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Orangemen to a lopsided 63-47 victory and a berth in the Final Four.

He had a fire.

This year's team - I'm not sure they do.

That's what's missing.

Donte Greene and Jonny Flynn are two of the most talented freshmen in the country.

Plus, they're easy to like.

There's a reason why the entire student section is throwing up “Dynasty” signs. These guys are entertainers.

They fill the highlight real, they pump up the crowd and they actually look like they're having a good time.

They're care-free.

But are they mean?

When Syracuse was getting trounced by Cincinnati and West Virginia, I never saw any anger. I saw disappointment. I saw a loss of confidence. But I never saw that mean streak that good teams possess.

This is where they miss Eric Devendorf.

Forget his 17 points per game, Devo brought an “I'm better than you” demeanor to every game. While his antics sometimes wore thin on SU fans, it's become quite clear -that edge is now missing.

On Sunday, West Virginia's Joe Alexander dunked on Arinze Onuaku then stared down the 258-pound behemoth.

Let's get one thing straight, A.O. could snap Alexander in half if he wanted to.

But on this occasion, he just turned the other way. No yapping. No payback.

He did nothing.

What do you think Devo would have done?

Arinze isn't a trash-talker. Off the court, he's as soft-spoken as can be. On the court, he lets his work do the talking.

And that's fine. Every team needs a pacifist, a cool head.

But every team also needs a fiery personality - someone who takes things personally.

In this case, Alexander completed the three-point play and the Mountaineers went on to an 81-61 victory.

Nobody responded.

Devendorf took things personal. So did 'Melo. Even G-Mac had a vengeful personality on the court.

Right now, I don't see anyone on the Syracuse men's basketball team who has that edge.

The Orange has boatloads of young talent. But when they get pushed around, when they get embarrassed on national television, how will they respond?

This team is easy to relate to. We see the smiles and laughter. We see the goofing around on the bench and during player introductions - all stuff we saw during 'Melo's tenure.

This team is just missing one key ingredient. They need that fire.

Either they development an edge now, or they'll get tired of smiling through blowout losses.

Tonight adds another chapter to a great saga. I have relatives who graduated from Chapel Hill and have a brother who goes to Alabama-Auburn football games. But they refer to this rivalry as something different. Watch out for Hoya Paranoia---it's contagious!

It will be a big test for our young team..I wonder, given the attitude from the above article(s), if they realize what a G-Town vs. SU game really is all about?? I predict we'll get spanked.. but ya never know. I hope I'm wrong.

NCAA rules require Boeheim to conduct a fire drill with his players once a month. Last night they did just that. Until Roy Hibbert stopped them in the hallway. Then it was considered a BLOCKED fire drill. Oh yeah!

IDIOT!
SU basketball's Jardine linked to stolen ID card
Posted by Jim O'Hara January 29, 2008 11:05PM
Categories: Breaking News, City News, Crime & Safety, Sports
Syracuse, N.Y. - Syracuse University basketball player Scoop Jardine knew another student's identification card was being used to order more than $100 worth of food, helped carry in the food when it was delivered to his apartment and then tried to cover up his involvement, according to a statement from his cousin filed in court today.

District Attorney William J. Fitzpatrick said he did not plan to prosecute Jardine. He said the case had been reviewed by senior members of his staff who decided Jardine's involvement was "sufficiently minor so as to allow the Syracuse University judicial process to handle it." Fitzpatrick said he had not seen the paperwork, but okayed his staff's decision.

Jardine was suspended indefinitely from the basketball team last weekend by coach Jim Boeheim, but remains enrolled as a student, said Kevin Quinn, SU's vice president of public affairs. He did not comment further about Jardine's academic standing or give the reason for the suspension, citing federal privacy laws prohibiting universities from talking about students.

Boeheim, who was on the road with his team, declined to comment about Jardine today. Jardine could not be reached for comment.

Here's more reporting on Orange basketball, including Jardine's absence from the SU team. Jardine hasn't practiced this week and didn't accompany the team to Chicago. SU plays at DePaul Wednesday night.

Jardine's cousin, Robert Washington was arraigned today in Syracuse City Court on felony charges of second-degree forgery and fourth-degree grand larceny and a misdemeanor count of third-degree identity theft.

Washington admitted in a written statement to police that he signed the receipt for the purchase of $115.65 worth of food on the stolen ID card Jan. 13. He said Jardine was there when the use of the stolen card was discussed and the food was ordered and delivered to Jardine's apartment on Winding Ridge Road.

Washington also said Jardine called him last week to say police were investigating their use of the card and to direct Washington to tell lawyers Jardine was not involved.

Washington, 40, of Philadelphia, is being held in the Justice Center jail without bail pending a bail review Wednesday morning before County Judge William Walsh. He was arraigned today before City Judge Vanessa Bogan.

Defense lawyer James McGraw said Washington maintains Jardine was not involved in any criminal wrongdoing. McGraw said Washington did not mean to implicate Jardine in anything that was said in his court statement

Tough win tonight. They are so depleted yet they still are winning. Just imagine if Greene stays(he should) and Rautins and Devo come back.

Your right Gio and thanks for the reminder, I sometimes forget that these are in fact just teenagers.

I;'ll take that win alst night , they fought hard, it was close, and some lucky bounces and other teams mistakes worked in our favor!
I hope Green stays. With the (missing) leaders on the court it would be a complelety different team! sigh!

Dont get me wrong he is old enough to know better but I cant help but wonder if he thought his 40 year old cousin bought the food with his own credit card and only after found out what he really did and tried to distance himself. Either way he will have to pay the pipper...

From NewsChannel 9 website -

NewsChannel 9 has learned from a source close to the team that SU basketball freshman guard Scoop Jardine will play in Saturday’s game at Villanova.

Lets hope Scoop learned from this incident and keeps his nose clean...

The Wildcats also lost their second game in two Saturdays at the Wachovia Center, their off-campus where they were nearly invincible the last three years. This time, they were left to watch about 2,000 Orange fans wave, taunt and cheer in the waning moments.

Now normally I would never taunt or condone the antics of Flynn but I am sure it was all in the spirit of good clean fun. ;\)

They had won 3 straight going into tonight vs. UConn. Tough loss. Great baskets at the end, not enough. My complaint for years has been not enough of a bench. I know they've got the 2 major players injured, but still. They've always been thin on the bench. The kids out of hs can't play 40 min., game after game.

They wouldnt have too if Rautins and Devo hadnt blown out a knee, and Josh Wright be a complete waste of space baby head. I love how when Syracuse has the ball, it extends to the shoulders. Jim Burr and Jim Higgins are consistantly awful.

I disagree with that. With all the camps and AAU teams and spring and summer leagues. The international play some of them get has made the freshmen of today 10x more prepared then those of times past.

I heard the announcers also make refernece to the guys maybe getting tired, I agree with Gio, they seemed to be doing just fine. It was a tough game, lousy refs, and for a stretch late in the second half everything UConn threw up at the basket went in! Nice to see PH taking on the leadership role.

Greene is not going anywhere. When you are a freshman, and you are running a fastbreak, and pull up for an NBA three (and brick 2-14), you are NOT going pro. Do not get me wrong, I love the kid, but mentally he needs to step it up.

"Championship Dreams"
Next year, is the next championship for SU. With Andy and Devendorf back, and all the freshman back (which they will be). SU is a number one seed in the east and maybe #1 in the country by the end of the season. The worry for me is Paul Harris, because he can take over the game now, he IS ready for the NBA and the money.

I also agree with Greene not going. He can score inside and outside but just doesn't seem consistent at times. Paul Harris will stay - Flynn and him have a strong bond.

Ok.. not to be a kill joy about a decent win, but I get sick of watching SU Students storm the court after a big win. Teams that have won National Championships don't do that. I think I heard that Georgetown hasn't had very much luck in the dome in the past almost 10 years. Something like 2-8? So, expect to beat a team you routinely beat at home. Pretend like you've won at least once or twice before.. my goodness.

Other than that, pretty solid game all around. ;\)

Good win but all we will hear about is how they lost to RI and Umass at the start of the season and how they lost to USF last week....

They're not gonna make it to the dance for the 2nd year in a row. Last year they got robbed. This year they truly don't deserve it. They've fun been to watch, but toward the end of the game, when they run out of steam, it's torture.

I really never thought they would go to the NCAA after Devo got hurt. Just wait till next year.

Ok I'm trying very hard not to be overly optimistic, during last nights game they showed stats on numerous teams on the bubble..still on the bubble, and SU is right up there. Watching the team, (at one point late with 4 Freshman and 1 Soph) I can’t help but wonder what it would have been like with Devo's leadership and Rautins on the floor! sigh!.. One thing I have been watching closely is the development of Paul Harris, recalling that he came in touted as one of the best recruits in the country. I am seeing flashes of greatness in this kid and I beleive that he could rise to be one of the best in college basketball next year, he is an amazing athlete!

They were great last night. Even without Devo and Rautins next year, this team can be very special....with them....they could be amazing.

Not according to Goathead they wont. Some will leave for the NBA and the ones left will have no heart because they give up....

Hard to keep playing when 28% 3-point shooters are raining down 3's from 40 feet.

I think they get by Hartford but lose in the next round to Texas A&M. If they do get by Texes A&M they will lose to Duke in the sweet 16.

Definitely a crowd energizer. Did you notice the look on Coach B's face?? He didn't look too pleased with that but it was needed after Gist's disrespect with that windmill slam previously. I thought they would have that play on the recap on ESPN.com but they didn't show it.

I didn't get to watch the game. We don't get ESPNU out here. I only saw it on Sportscenter.

Gist had a break away and did this awesome windmill dunk and of course that would not do. AO responded with several dunks and in your faces on Maryland but they needed something a little more to emphasis this was the Loud House and of course The Flynn and Donte' obliged with that between the legs pass and flying dunk. The camera crew cuts to Coach B and there he was standing up with that "I do not approve" look on his face. What was he going to do though? The crowd was roaring and the boys were so pumped I'm surprised they didn't float to the top of the dome.

Those officials made Higgins and Burr look good. That being said....they looked totally gassed. They all played so many minutes all year. Can we just skip SU football, and go right to basketball season.

...and beyond

Does anyone foresee a problem w/ next year's team ?
Jimbo RARELY plays more than 8 deep. Unless he changes
his 'career mindset' regarding bench play, I can see a few disgruntled
players next season. Perhaps, to the point of transferring.

I can honestly see him giving 8 significant minutes with 10 getting additional minutes. They will be fairly wide open next year.

That game was pathetic, I knew towards the end of the 1st half and all the dapper dan, fancy pantsy passing and crap they were trying to do that their own young arrogance would help them blow it again, the didnt let me down. grrrrrrrrr

they couldn't make a lay up...on to next season. Hopefully, Green won't jump ship and they'll have a bench and some legs.
