Reports of Hopkins replacing Boeheim surface
Updated: 5/16/2007 5:05 AM
By: Ryan Dean

For 31 years, Coach Jim Boeheim has manned the sideline for the Syracuse Orange. During that time, he's won more than 700 games and brought the University a national championship.

For years, fans have wondered how long Boeheim will stay at SU and when he retires who will take his spot. Well according to ESPN.com, one of those questions has been answered.

Former Orange player and longtime assistant Mike Hopkins will take over when the Hall of Fame coach retires. However, there's no timetable on when Boeheim will step down.

Hopkins played under Boeheim and has sat by his side for 12 years. He's credited for recruiting talented players such as Gerry McNamara.

So, what do you think? Did SU make the right decision, or should they go outside the program to find the next head coach?

"He's been an assistant for years, SU player. I don't think it's a bad idea. Not at all."

"Now we got a coach who will be the coach for another 30 years. If we don't keep him, we'll lose him to another program."

All the fans we spoke to at Tully's in Syracuse liked the idea. If Hopkins does in fact does take over, the Orange faithful believe he will have no problems being successful.

"I think Hopkins has proven himself. He's a great recruiter. Players like him, and I think this is a great transition."

SU has not made a formal announcement, and the 62-year-old Boeheim may decide to stick around for quite some time. ESPN.com reports that Hopkins and Syracuse University are working on putting the plans in writing.

I agree, and cant imagine not seeing J.B. on the bench. But if the coasch is ok with it and SU does want to get Hopkins inked into a contract, cool, better for recruitment issues and the eventual transition.

Good point. I like Hopkins and hope to still be around when he does take over the program when Coach B retires.

This is a great move. Now there will be no speculation, no rumors. Hop is a quality recruiter. This totally brings back the opportunity for Gerry to start his coaching. Which I think we will see happen sooner rather than later.

CRAP!
Crushing Loss
Rautins tears ACL, MCL; out for season
Friday, August 24, 2007
By Mike Waters Staff writer
Syracuse University junior Andy Rautins suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a partially torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee while playing for Canada in the FIBA Americas tournament in Las Vegas on Wednesday and will miss the 2007-08 season.
Rautins father, Leo, who is the coach of the Canadian team, said an MRI taken on Thursday revealed the full extent of the damage to the knee.
Rautins' knee buckled as he rushed to defend an opponent during Canada's opening-round 75-67 loss to Brazil.
"Yeah, it's the worst, although for the worst, it could have been worse," Leo Rautins said in a telephone interview from Las Vegas after Canada's 80-73 win over Venezuela on Thursday. "The ACL's gone. Completely severed. The medial collateral's partially torn, but there's no structural damage and no cartilage damage. That's a good thing. With this, it's a tough pill to swallow, but at least you can heal."
Rautins, a 6-foot-5 guard, had been in the middle of an incredible summer of international play. He led Canada in scoring at the World University Games in Brazil, earning a spot on the Senior National Team roster for the FIBA
tournament, which has 10 nations competing for two berths in the 2008 Olympics.
In a warmup event last week in Puerto Rico, Rautins was Canada's second-leading scorer. He helped Canada to surprising wins over Puerto Rico and Argentina.
"He was having a great summer," Rautins said. "This tournament meant everything to him. He was really determined to help us qualify."
Rautins said recovery time for his son would be in the range of six months.
"The key right now is we're going to determine when we're going to do the surgery, who's going to do the surgery and what procedure," Leo Rautins said.

Bummer. But seriously is it going to be that big a loss with this class coming in? He is redshirting and will be back next year.

He's a kid who started or came off the bench in
a world of emotion with his 3 point shot !! That will
absolutely be missed.

Andy was hardened, fire of the fire player, where everyone is a star !!!

We'll lose that aspect, but we'll know in short order who the qualified are to fill that role.

As these kids get fortified and solidified, it will be good for them and their future, but Andy could end up the 6th or 7th man again next year.

Plus, SU has an entering 2008 class, who knows how that will effect the broad picture .

What a freaking game!!!!!!!! It is nice to be able to counter the freshman mistakes with such an awesome array of offensive weapons. Just imagine how good these kids will be when they get a little more experience under their belts.

Man I'm trying SO hard to not get to excited , but watching this young team, and the talent. holy crap, the best part, so far is it really looks like they are already having funand jellin as a team, they seem to know each others moves and such. With this new point guard Flynn, and a 6-11 swing guard/forward, man what a sweet jumper Green has...this is a team FULL of major talent.

I know what you mean with tying not to get too excited. All three teams they have played have been veteran teams with some pretty decent talent and these kids showed no fear or intimidation. I think they have a good shot at beating Ohio State if they take care of the ball better then those first two games.
