Islam Awareness Week kicks off at Cornell
Abdulaziz Alkhalifa / Guest Column
Between his shoulders was the seal of prophecy, the sign that he was the last of the prophets. He was the most generous-hearted of men, the most truthful of them in speech, the most mild-tempered of them, and the noblest of them in lineage. Whoever saw him unexpectedly was in awe of him. And whoever associated with him familiarly, loved him. Anyone who would describe him would say, I never saw, before him or after him, the like of him. Peace be upon him — Hind, son of Abu Hawla
So goes a segment describing the Prophet of God, Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. The narrator of the description, Hind the son of Abu Hawla, was one of more than 100,000 disciples who flocked to the city of Madina the Radiant to drink from the waters of guidance after centuries of worshiping stone idols in the deserts of confusion.
Starting today and continuing for six full days, the Muslim Educational and Cultural Association at Cornell University is proud to present the third annual Islam Awareness Week. Monday opens with an intimate talk at 8 p.m. in Rockefeller Hall delivered by a resident scholar of Islam, Omer Bajwa. It is titled Islam 101: Everything you need to know about Islam (but were afraid to ask). Events continue on Tuesday with a panel discussion on The Status, Rights & Role of Women in Islam at 8 p.m. in the Alice Cook House. On Wednesday, the Muslim Chaplain at New York University is set to deliver an engaging lecture about the Islamic perspective on social justice and human rights at 8 p.m. in the Kaufmann Auditorium in Goldwin Smith Hall. On Thursday, students and Ithaca residents will be treated to a screening of an episode of Morgan Spurlock's “30 Days...” series at 8 p.m. in the Lewis Auditorium in Goldwin Smith Hall. In this episode of the series a conservative Christian man from North Carolina spends 30 days living as a Muslim in Michigan.
The week reaches its climax on Friday with two talks delivered by the accomplished North-American-born scholar of Islam, Dr. Umar F. Abd-Allah (Wymann-Landgraf). Abd-Allah chairs the Nawawi Foundation and has been recognized by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf Hanson as one of the leaders of North-American Muslim scholars. He also had the honor of studying under some of the greatest traditional scholars in the Middle East, including the late gnostic of the 20th century Habib Ahmad Mashur Al-Haddad. Abd-Allah's first lecture starts at noon in 106 White Hall and is titled The Role of Hadith in the Formation of Islamic Law. Abd-Allah's keynote address, “Cultural Jihad: The Role of American Muslim Culture in Today's World” will start at 8 p.m. in Goldwin Smith Hall.
Islam Awareness Week comes to a close on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with an Islamic tile-painting and calligraphy workshop at the Johnson Museum. The event is particularly suitable for children who like to draw and for their parents who would rather that their children didn't draw on the walls of their house. Reservations are recommended as the number of participants is limited. For the last and final event, the internationally acclaimed artist Ibrahim El-Salahi will give a presentation of his work at the Johnson Museum at 3 p.m. and follow it up with a discussion on Modern Islamic Art.
In closing and on the behalf of all of the individuals whose hard work made these events a reality, we sincerely hope that everyone in Ithaca will enjoy the week's line-up. For further information, please feel free to e-mail me at ara33@cornell.edu.

Obviously the opportunity to learn something, to open oneself up to new cultures, new information, new ideas, is nauseating to this poster.
I love how just because there is an Islam Awareness event people start SCREAMING "where's the Jewish awareness event?" and "where's the Christian awareness event"? These are usually the same people who hate, for example, women's or black history month. The fact that it's white man's awareness day every day, and it has been since the inception of this country, does not occur to some. Nor does it occur that if maybe the lazy campus Christians and Jews got off their butts and ORGANIZED an awareness week, no one would have a problem with it. The bitterness over the lack of Christian and Jewish awareness events to "compliment" the Islamic one is HILARIOUS, since the only reason there AREN'T ones is because CHRISTIANS AND JEWS AREN'T ORGANIZING THEM. So....basically they are pissed because Christians and Jews aren't bothering, putting themselves out there to be heard and understood in a PEACEFUL VENUE the way Muslims are.
What a nightmare! Listening and talking to Muslims. GROSS! What's the point, right? They are just TERRORISTS.
Idiots. If they were TERRORISTS they wouldn't bother with or care about your UNDERSTANDING. They'd just BLOW UP CORNELL instead of TALKING THERE ALL WEEK.

I will give you the benefit of doubt.I hope you are simply naieve, instead of the alternative. I am sure you are a friend of ALL mankind....but,this "event" is nothing more than intelligista propaganda. Anyone can worship whatever they want..this is still America.I have no problem with this ,regardless of your baseless accusations. That does not mean I cannot voice opposition to blatant pr stunts. All "religions" in America have the right to prostlyze.Wether it is the global warning religion, the Muslims, humanists or Christians..whomever. I will not cease to state that Jesus Christ IS the Way,THE TRUTH,and THE LIFE of mankind. To do less would be to deny my Lord. All others are imposters.Whether you like it or not. You may detest the manner in which I go about it.That is no concern of mine.

I despise admitting this...but you are cracking me up. Concerning my "rabbling" response..I had a dream that I was in a sensitivity class. I will do my utmost to not disappoint you at my next opportunity to crush emotionalist Marxism.(how was that?) Have a good one.

So Islamic Awareness weak is propoganda but a Christian Awareness Week would not be? Oh yeah, that's right, because Christians speak the truth - the Word, if you will. My bad.
