I was just reading this article and I am curious about other people's thoughts. How old is too old to be breastfed?

My mom nursed me until I was 8 years old and then I made some friends at the playground.

That explains a lot Lusi.... That confirms for me that you can screw kids up by nursing them too long.

Doesn't breastfeeding a child until it's 5 make it harder to bond with the father? After all, after a year breastfeeding is a comfort thing, not a food thing. How is the dad supposed to comfort a child when it runs for a boob every time something is wrong?

I think it is a personal decision. I personally would not breastfeed that long. But, others might. The longest I breastfed was 9 months, and then my son bit me...and laughed...no more boob juice for him!

As far as the Dad bonding, there are other ways for them to bond with children then just feeding. Bedtime stories, playing, teaching, bathing, going to a park, etc. And for young babies, Mom can always pump a bottle to allow Dad to feed the child.

Food should never be considered a "comfort zone", no matter where it comes from.

When they get ALL their childhood teeth? My daughter-in-law nursed her oldest and when she took him into a store with her, he would grab at her shirt for a drink....lol

Extended nursing (breastfeeding beyond the first year) has more to it then just "comfort". Currently the WHO (world health organization) recommends:

Quote:
All mothers should have access to skilled support to initiate and sustain exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and ensure the timely introduction of adequate and safe complementary foods with continued breastfeeding up to two years or beyond.

So - up to age 2. But considering that most mothers that nurse in the US only make it to 3 months old - so 2 years seems like eons.

There are MANY benefits to nursing past the 1 year birthday.. here is a link to a fact sheet listing just a few of the many wonderful benefits of extended breastfeeding.

As long as the kid hasn't progressed to asking "boob mommy, please" I think we're okay...but honestly if they're old enough to ask verbally...give them a cup. Anything much beyond one year and the mother is nursing for HER sake and not the sake of the child.

HP - if you went and visited the link i listed - there are listed MANY benefits to the CHILD and the MOTHER who nurse beyond 1 year. As i also quoted from the WHO website - they recommend nursing up through to the second birthday and beyond (i left the quote before here is the link to the page i got the quote on the WHO website:

Personally, I would say no more than 1 year. If the benefits of the nutrition are wanted, then pump and sip it cup it.

Thena,
What are your thoughts on some mothers in the article who insist on breastfeeding 5 year olds?

Personally - i would not nurse a child that long... but its not my child and not my choice. i don't know the reasons why they are choosing to still nurse at age 5, but i have even seen/heard of a mother breastfeeding her 8 year old child (In the UK i believe it was). My upper limit personally is about age 3... when my child will most likely starting preschool.

I watched an episode on super-nanny where a mother was still breastfeeding at 3 years old and it was ruining the marriage.... the Husband couldn't get close to his wife because the child was always stuck there! She complained on how the child would be scarred and didn't want bottles....and she didn't want to upset the child blah blah blah.... Jo had her try it once.... the kid cried for about 3 minutes then took the bottle and fell asleep. I am all for breastfeeding and the positive effects of it....and the bonding that develops and such but if you still want the child to have breast mild why not pump and give it to the child that way and free yourself for quality time with the other family members?

P.S. Thena this is NOT directed at you personally...it is just my general view on the topic. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

If breastfeeding is effect a marriage - there are more issues then just the breastfeeding... just my opinion and experience.

At 3... sure - why not pump and give in a cup. Children shouldnt be using bottles after their first birthday, because of teeth development. My son (who is still nursing and will be 10 months old this month) is already using a sippy cup. No sense to wean from breast to bottle and bottle to cup.

One could also argue that if Mommy is is still breastfeeding at age 3 that there are more issues than just breastfeeding in a marriage.

Reasonableness applies to everything. 1 yr seems reasonable. 3 yrs seems outrageous. 5 yrs a sex crime.

Or why not just ask your pediatrician what they recommend instead of some pro-breastfeeding blog website?

Ask the true experts, not just a consensus of other breastfeeding moms?

I might add a balance of the two viewpoints would be best. I've heard doctors suggest 2 weeks of breastfeeding and that's isn't to me the point of when a baby doesn't need milk.
The upper limit should be 3 years or less in my opinion, and a lot of the moms stop when the baby is growing teeth in.

From my own experience with my son, I wouldn't have felt comfortable doing it past 1 1/2 years old. He was a very intelligient infant and still a very intelligent toddler. But, I do know of people who's children are the same age as my sone, almost 2 years old now, and are still breastfeeding. I think it has a lot to do with the comfort of the mother. Otherwise, I think past the age of 3 is a little "different". Hopefully I didn't offend anyone, just my thoughts.

I know that after two weeks of breastfeeding, my husband was very jealous and asked me to start pumping too so that he could feed the boy.

I would say that the info i posted - from the world health organization (which says up to age 2 and beyond) would be unbiased - unlike if i had posted from La Leche League (which from my experience advocated child-led weaning).

I have no personal need to know what a peditrician says on the topic. My youngest is four yrs old and stopped nuring at 8 months. I was just curious what others thought on the subject of exended breastfeeding at ages 5 and up.

Ask the true experts, not just a consensus of other breastfeeding moms?

I have no personal need to know what a peditrician says on the topic. My youngest is four yrs old and stopped nuring at 8 months. I was just curious what others thought on the subject of exended breastfeeding at ages 5 and up.

You may have no need...But your child does.

Or are you saying that you're more educated than a pediatrician?

Um, no- my child has no need either. As I already said my youngest is four years old and stopped nursing at 8 months old. I was simply curous about other people's thoughts on breasfeeding at ages of four and higher.

oh - so the mothers of America should listen to the companies who produce formula, and help increase their profits by using formula instead of breastfeeding? Such as those lovely gift bags given out at the birth of a child in the hospital containing all sorts of lovely education - promoting formula/bottle feeding - that is what you want us to use instead?

Human milk for human babies... formula will NEVER match breast milk and breast milk is best for babies. I believe that the choice to breast feed or bottle feed should be the SOLE decision of a child mother (and hopefully father too!) and that decision should not be corrupted by companies only seeking to increase their profits.

I nursed my daughter for 13 months. She never had a bottle either. I have a friend who nursed her son for over 2 years. Not sure how she stoped him but I do know that he still doesn't sleep thru the night. He wakes up wanting to "eat". Long story about this friend...anyways, nursing until the child is 5 or older...why? My grandparents can tell you stories-they do taxes for a living and the things they can tell you...
