I was just reading this article and I am curious about other people's thoughts. How old is too old to be breastfed?

My mom nursed me until I was 8 years old and then I made some friends at the playground.

That explains a lot Lusi.... That confirms for me that you can screw kids up by nursing them too long.

Doesn't breastfeeding a child until it's 5 make it harder to bond with the father? After all, after a year breastfeeding is a comfort thing, not a food thing. How is the dad supposed to comfort a child when it runs for a boob every time something is wrong?

I think it is a personal decision. I personally would not breastfeed that long. But, others might. The longest I breastfed was 9 months, and then my son bit me...and laughed...no more boob juice for him!

As far as the Dad bonding, there are other ways for them to bond with children then just feeding. Bedtime stories, playing, teaching, bathing, going to a park, etc. And for young babies, Mom can always pump a bottle to allow Dad to feed the child.

Food should never be considered a "comfort zone", no matter where it comes from.

When they get ALL their childhood teeth? My daughter-in-law nursed her oldest and when she took him into a store with her, he would grab at her shirt for a drink....lol

Extended nursing (breastfeeding beyond the first year) has more to it then just "comfort". Currently the WHO (world health organization) recommends:

Quote:
All mothers should have access to skilled support to initiate and sustain exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and ensure the timely introduction of adequate and safe complementary foods with continued breastfeeding up to two years or beyond.

So - up to age 2. But considering that most mothers that nurse in the US only make it to 3 months old - so 2 years seems like eons.

There are MANY benefits to nursing past the 1 year birthday.. here is a link to a fact sheet listing just a few of the many wonderful benefits of extended breastfeeding.

As long as the kid hasn't progressed to asking "boob mommy, please" I think we're okay...but honestly if they're old enough to ask verbally...give them a cup. Anything much beyond one year and the mother is nursing for HER sake and not the sake of the child.

Personally, I would say no more than 1 year. If the benefits of the nutrition are wanted, then pump and sip it cup it.

Thena,
What are your thoughts on some mothers in the article who insist on breastfeeding 5 year olds?

Personally - i would not nurse a child that long... but its not my child and not my choice. i don't know the reasons why they are choosing to still nurse at age 5, but i have even seen/heard of a mother breastfeeding her 8 year old child (In the UK i believe it was). My upper limit personally is about age 3... when my child will most likely starting preschool.

I watched an episode on super-nanny where a mother was still breastfeeding at 3 years old and it was ruining the marriage.... the Husband couldn't get close to his wife because the child was always stuck there! She complained on how the child would be scarred and didn't want bottles....and she didn't want to upset the child blah blah blah.... Jo had her try it once.... the kid cried for about 3 minutes then took the bottle and fell asleep. I am all for breastfeeding and the positive effects of it....and the bonding that develops and such but if you still want the child to have breast mild why not pump and give it to the child that way and free yourself for quality time with the other family members?

P.S. Thena this is NOT directed at you personally...it is just my general view on the topic. Good Luck with whatever you decide.
