My 3 yr old granddaughter wears underpants and never has an accident BUT when she has to poop she insists on a diaper so she can go in it. We are stumped as to how to get her to poop in the toilet. We are sick of changing crappy diapers, any suggestions???

She'll be fine and she'll go in the potty when she is ready. It's all about control at that age and the only things kids can control at three are body functions! Be happy she is going and not holding it as some kids do. When she has to go give her a choice between diaper and toilet, don't make a big deal out of it. You could try to dump the feces into the toilet and wave goodbye to it with her standing there. Some kids see feces as extentions of themselves and are horrified that it is being flushed away! Good luck!

this worked for my boys, I had them sit backwards on the toilet, so they weren't hanging off the end, so to speak. They seemed to be more comfortable in that position.

I started my kids (girls) with nice frilly, satin panties that once they saw them folded in the drawer and were told when you can keep your diapers dry and clean, out the diapers go, and you start wearing these.
Didn't even take a week. Those panties were worth the extra cost.

She'll do it when she's ready, but not being gross, but maybe if she realizes that everyone goes on the pot and it's safe, maybe that would help. Maybe she is afraid of losing part of herself. I can sympathsize with having to change them. Personally I have one each and we never used anything but plain underwear to train them. I didn't buy them the padded ones either. Just fun ones, colors and frills and cartoon characters. But what works for one doesn't mean it will for everyone. The other side of this, and just being nosy, is she on the beginning side of 3 or the end side of 3?

She just turned 3. I was pooping one day and she came to the bathroom so I said Grandma goes poop like a big girl and she said mommy goes like a big girl too but I still little. She never pees her pants just asks for a diaper goes and squats in the corner and tells me when she is done. I am going to try flushing it next time she goes. SAhe knows how much nicer it would be then having ro lay down and have her butt cleaned. She's lucky she is the love of my life after only having boys!

She'll be fine. I was thinking that maybe if she was on the old end of 3 maybe you should ask for the pediatrician's advice, but she's still young. Maybe make a big production of putting in the pot? Have a special toy that she can have if and only if she poops in the pot? Oh and we used a potty chair, to start ours out.

My daughter was having a similar problem with my older grandson, he didnt want to go poop on the potty either. My sister who works with developely challenged children (my grandson is not developely challenged)suggested taking him to visit a friuend with a newborn baby. Then explain to him little babies do not know any better and cannot say when they ahve to go potty. They have to poop in their diapers, but big boys dont. It worked! He did have an occasional accident, but they stopped once he was in Pre-K as he saw no one there had "accidents".He does occasionally wet the bed. We were very angered to hear that his Dad was putting him in time out in the morning after yelling at him for wetting the bed. This is not a discipline issue, and we let him know that. The pediatrician has told us that he will eventually outgrow those occasional accidents, and they ONLY happen for the most part at his Dad's. Very strange.

Did anyone ever consider the possibility that, if a child is breast-fed until age six, they MIGHT not take to potty-training until 11 or 12??

Does this also explain why when men "go back to the breast", they suddenly have bad aim in the bathroom?

The aim is from bad eyesight???

Your "back to the breast" comment brings up another question?

At what age do most women decide to "go back to the bottle"?

I remember my mom telling me that my behavior would cause me to go blind. I developed cramps in my hand, so my deterioration stopped at 20/600 vision. The bad aim of most men could probably be corrected with a little more TLC from the wife.

My daughter was stubborn like that at 3 also. All it took for her was for a friend (1 year older than her) to go in the bathroom with her (like girls always do!) She didn't want her friend to think she wasn't a big kid too!

Here's a thought, stop giving it to her and let her crap her pants a few times. Maybe then she'll stop.

Or you could put a cat box in the corner and save on Pampers.

My baby's diapers smell a little like rotting cabbage. Too bad I can't post the smell here. Words do not do it justice.

Au, if that is true...take me off the mailing list, I ahve two grandsons, and had three kids...I know that smell..lol.

Mememe, I know it might be hard, but STOP giving into her demands for a diaper and if she has accidents in her underwear, so be it. Each time you give her a diaper you are reinforcing to her that this behavior is acceptable.

When my son was two and half, he articulated very well one day that "Mommy, last diaper, got to buy more." If he could say all that, he could tell me it was potty time. He hated it, but we got through it and so will you.

I worry that if I stop putting her in a diaper she will hold it and end up with an impacted bowel. My son had that at one time {not from anything like she pulls} and I remember what he went thru.

You could at least try it and see if it goes TOO long, and then give her a diaper.

Trust me, she wouldnt go that long. Even if she has an accident here and there, she will get the idea. Make sure she is getting plenty of fluids and fiber to prevent constipation. If she does not get constipated she will not get an impaction.

She is not all that far away now from kindergarten, if you do not get passed this by then, what will she do? She will hold it til she gets home. Nip it in the bud now while you can be there to reassure her.

I know this is hard. We went through it last year with my grandson. It is not impossible, you know this, you are a Momma. \:\)

Right. There's nothing like crap in one's pants to concentrate one's attention on prevention.

Good point. Hey, she might even explode! If I were you, I'd keep her in diapers until she's 12, just in case.

I told my daughterinlaw the other night as she was changing her{and we were making a big deal about all her big girl friends who use the potty} that we should just start letting her crap in her big girl pants and she told me that my granddaughter now just goes in her room, stands up and puts on the diaper herself then she puts her big girl pants on over it. She just comes out when she is done. AND she will crap in a room full of her cousins playing if she has to, She has no shame. I said buy no more diapers but she said that she needs to use them at night cuz she does wake up wet alot of times. The othe night she let herself be changed in front her 4 yr old best playmate and coulda cared less what she thought. Her friend was looking at her like EWWWWWWWWWW!!!

I don't think it's a good idea to try to embarrass her. That is just cruel. And to not buy her any more diapers? I don't think that's right either. She might stop going all together and just hold it, and you wouldn't want that, would you?

If it sounds like we are trying to embarrass her we aren't, we would never do that to her. As I said she has no shame she crapped and asked to be changed in front of her 3 almost 4 yr old playmate the other night and coulda cared less what her friend thought. we are just trying to impress on her how big girls do it. We are hoping that she will realize that all her big girl friends use the toilet and she should also go in the potty like a big girl. And as I said earlier in these posts I too was concerned with her holding it and becoming constipated which is why I at first thought not putting a diaper on her wasn't a good idea. Where you get that we are "cruel" to her out of this makes me wonder where your mind is.

Just stop reinforcing it is ok to go in diapers, stop giving into her requests for them or putting them where she can retrieve them herself. If she needs night time diapers, that is fine, just put them where she cannot find them. Mememe, she will learn in due time that this is not the correct way, kids are all different, none are exactly the same. Each move at their own pace.

I hardly think it is something we need to see a dr about. This is a parenting forum Spencer and I was just seeking other parents opinions. You have a problem with it then please just ignore my posts.

Spencer I sure am glad I have a life and don't spend as much time on these forums as you, I don't think I could deal with someone with your personality much. My conversations with you are over please just keep your holier than thou sarcasm away from me and any posts I ask for suggestions about. You saved me money?? I wouldn't take any advice from you even if it was concerning a gnat. Can you say sarcastic BEE OTCH

mememe, it appears that you have "other issues" in your life. You appear to be so bitter! I wish you well, really.. Oh, and good luck with your granddaughter. Sounds like she's a doll!

I guessed that, but since you replied to me, instead of to Georgie, I didn't want anyone (let's say, someone who'd started reading the thread at your post) to think that I'd said the things that you castigated me for saying. If you had replied to the person whom you had actually wished to reply to, that wouldn't be an issue.

When I asked, "Where is your mind?", I was saying that replying to the correct person is not rocket science; it is not that hard to do, if one pays attention to what one is doing.

BTW, good luck with the kid. I think that the process is a little more difficult now than it was in the early 50s, when I went through that stage. Back then, one could probably have let one's kid have crap in her pants until she just got sick of it, and embarrassed about it, without having CPS steal the kid away. And that's the way I'd still play it; I'd just tell her that, until she goes and changes her pants and cleans herself up, she's not allowed to sit on any of the furniture, and that if she chooses to act like an animal, she'll be treated like one.

I think that, to a great degree, you're enabling her. If one wants to raise a human being that is indisposed to engaging in rational problem solving, it's easy enough to do; just let her run the show. Then, by the time she's a teenager, you'll have an absolute monster on your hands, and problems that might be much more difficult to deal with.

Actually, if it continues without you giving her the diapers, it may need medical attention as it might be a pyschological issue. Not that she has mental problems, but in some children, for some reason, they view feces as a part of them, and do not like to see it flushed away. Also, because of your concern that if you stop giving her the diapers, she would become impacted. A doctor would be able to direct you on how to make sure this does not happen.

I wish you all the luck in the world, Mememe. But, I do not think you are looking for advice, because you seem to dismiss anything anyone offers on here. I think you want people to tell you it will correct it's self. At age 3, not all kids are potty trained, true. But, she is asking for a diaper, and uses the potty for urination. She obviously knows what she is doing. Stop giving into her demands for the diaper.

Are you friggen serious???????????? The one with the problem seems to be you! Yes a cat box would sooooooo be better than taking it to the friggen Dr. IT MAY BE A MEDICAL PROBLEM. Not such stupid advice. The fact that you don't take the child to the Dr. is stupid!

I distanced myself from a poisonious relationship a year ago and have a more happier peaceful life than I ever dreamed possible. I have children and a grandchild who love me very much {and vise versa} so my life is never dull.

HMMMM...then if you have the "real world" out there to enjoy, why bring such a sensitive matter to a "fake forum"?

Many people have tried to help you with "suggestions". You seem to think of all this as garbage and then come back each time telling us she is "still pooping in her diaper" and you keep giving them to her! Is she pooping in them in the "real world" or in a "fake forum" that you wouldnt want to listen to anyone's suggestions in?

Seriously, you brought the subject up on a PUBLIC FORUM. People responded. How long ago did you post for suggestions? And how many have you actually tried? And is she still pooping in the diapers that you give her each and everytime she asks and then wonder WHY she would still be doing it?
It is not too far fetched of an idea (a suggestion, if you will) to call her pediatrician's office and ask what can be done about your predicament. Unless of course you are afraid he will tell you to: stop reinforcing the bad behavior by giving into her dmeand for a diaper!!!

Hahahaha. Many times. Keep up will ya. I don't want to have to explain things to ya. Honey....I am not on here as much as you think I am. Most of my posts come from the game thread. Better do your homework before you sprout off at the mouth.....and at least my child wasn't in diapers at 10. Good luck with that. Sounds like you should actually spend more time "potty training" than on the computer being....well you know.

LOL. Yep....but I'm not the one with the crapping problem. I gave up wearing diapers a long time ago. I am sure at some point I will be wearing them again.
