I truly don't see this happening on federal land, for several reasons. First of all, I don't believe that the public would allow it to happen. Secondly, knowing how the government works, it would take YEARS for a project of this type to get approval so unless the company plans on having their grandchildren take over the business it's unlikely that they'd be willing to wait that long.

I do hope your right, but as you remember the gas drillers eyeing the FLNF and it took the work of senator Hilliary Clinton to get an amendment passed to prevent that from happening.

Planting marijuana on federal land is a very stupid thing to do.

The Rainbow people are back at the forest. Some were gathered along Potomac rd. where the Backbone trail crosses at the parking area. The past times they would be at Vesa\Bower intersection so I was surprised to see them here.I slowed down and waved but did not stop. My dog Sage and I continued on to the Blueberry Patch Campground and set up camp for the night- the whole place was empty but for us.I assume the forest service knows the rainbow group was there, but wonder why they were not in the usual area unless they walked the trail down to Vesa/Bower.

I saw the ranger earlier and she didn't mention it, but it's hardly even a gathering anymore. It used to be a huge drain of time and resources for both the US Forest Service and federal law enforcement. They likely did hike up from that intersection since it's only a mile away. They may have been heading to Foster Pond for a swim.

I bet he knows that they were there! ;\)

They could have been camping right off that parking area as well. It might not have even been an official gathering, rather folks in transit from one gathering to another. If that's the case, they didn't even have to let the forest service know. They're only required to have a special use permit if they have over a specific number of people camping. Otherwise, they can camp anywhere in the forest for up to two weeks.

the group had seemed pretty small, and it had ben a number of years since i have seen them there. One thing i have noted is that they never leave a mess when they leave. A number of times i have picked up messes that other groups have left.On a different note i am sure the forest service knows about the condition some of the tables at B.Patch Camp., a few of them have rotted boards that need to be replaced, i stayed at site #2 this week but almost did not due to the condition of the table there.

Even back in the day, when the gatherings were huge, they never left a trace. They had people whose specific jobs were to clean up after the event. Others were responsible for making sure that everyone's personal belongings made it safely to the next gathering. At one of the last regional events here, they took stones from one of the old walls to make a communal oven and when they left you couldn't even tell that they'd been there. That was the whole principle behind the gatherings originally--celebrating the earth. The problem was that because of the nomadic nature of the gatherings it was an easy place for someone to disappear. There was a small criminal element and a few radicals who traveled on the fringes of the gatherings (thus the need for law enforcement presence). These people weren't allowed to camp with the core group (nor were people who were drinking) but their inclusive nature didn't allow them to absolutely shun someone unless they were totally out of hand. They had some interesting ways of dealing with trouble makers too. ;\)

Took a ride to the Forest wed.Potomac rd. at Johnstons pasture had a line of cars almost were out of state plates. Sage and i wandered to the woods behind to see numerous tents and a banner Earth First Climbers Guild.
We nosed into their midst,a group were listening to a talk and demo about setting up climbing systems and repelling They were friendly and invited me to stay. I found it interesting, I thought they were using their systems for rescue work, but they were reppeling trees and setting up zip lines.
