I hadn't heard anything about it. I'll post when I know more.

Forest Girl, You seem very familiar with the Finger Lakes National Forest. I'm sad to say that I have lived in the area for quite a few years and have never visited there. My wife is partially handicapped, are there attractions that we can see there without her having to do a lot of walking?

Ballard Pond is right on Searsburg Road. It's totally handicapped accessible and a nice little fishing spot. You could continue from there west to Potomac Road (only about 1/4 mile). If you turn left on Potomac Road you can take a lovely drive through the heart of the forest. Three miles down Potomac you will come to the intersection of Picnic Area Road. It's a right hand turn onto Picnic Area Road, and as you travel up the hill you will see a number of bluebird boxes along the pasture on your left, as well as a kestrel box out in the middle of the pasture. At the top of the hill there's a parking area on the left with beautiful distant views down toward Ithaca. If you continue on over the hill you will pass the Blueberry Patch, the only developed tent camping area in the forest and then the Backbone Horse Camp. The horse camp is at the intersection of Burnt Hill Road. If you turn left onto that road you will travel through another beautiful section of the forest. There are several ponds along that road that are either easily viewed from the vehicle or a very short walk (you'll see the parking areas). At the end of Burnt Hill Road you will come to a "T" and if you go right it will take you down to Logan Road/Schuyler Co. 4 and if you bear left it will take you down to Route 79.

The foyer at the ranger station on Route 414 in Hector is open 24/7, if you want to stop by and pick up a map, or you can view/print one here: http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/greenmountain/htm/fingerlakes/images/maps/fl_trail_use11x17.jpg

You mean Picnic Area Road, and the last time that I was there the trees and the brush really obstructed the view from a vehicle. If you walk out into the pasture toward the tower the view is improved, but the cows are out to pasture now.

I stand corrected.Parking at the first spot and walking into the pasture to the old apple tree gives a great view. If someone is unable to leave the car just parking in the road there gives a very good view. There is a fire ring in the woods behind the parking area I have camped there several times and walked out to the road at sunset for an amazing sight.

They may well have trimmed/mowed along the pasture since the last time that I was there. I tried to get a decent photo from the vehicle and my view was obstructed the entire way down the hill. That is much different from catching a sunset from that perspective. It is a great vantage point for sunsets. I bet it would be spectacular from the tower, eh? It's probably not worth the fines involved though.

I also don't encourage people to go into the pastures on foot when the cows are out. They can be pretty intimidating.

A number of trails go through the pastures which are occupied by the cows may-oct. Usually I sneak through with an eye out for them.Sometimes try to man up and walk amongst them and they usually scatter, but they are always curious about my dog.Years and years ago a herd of cows chased my old dog which naturally came to me and we both ran and I fell in a dried up crick bed and got all banged up.Since then have had a reluctance to walk amongst them which I have tried to overcome, but they are a lot bigger than we are , so you have to respect that.

More often than not, they won't even pay any attention to you but you just never know. I certainly wouldn't suggest that anyone with any mobility issues take their presence for granted. I was talking to one of the old timers about the cattle one day years ago, and he said that you don't have to worry unless they start stomping the ground. I asked what I was supposed to do if that happened when I was out in the middle of a pasture, and he just grinned...

About 5 years ago the FLNF had some signs posted at gates to some pastures saying to beware of bulls in the pasture. That was enough to give me pause.

Free camping this weekend at FLNF, of course the weather was not too great, I could not camp but took a walk thru. Blueberry Patch Campground this morning only 3 of the 9 sites were taken.

Black Bear- This morning I was in the woods behind the parking lot at Burnt Hill trail off Pic Nic Rd. just down from the campground. I saw black at first thinking a cow had escaped the nearby pasture. But realized it was a sizable bear watching me from about 100 feet away, then it ambled away. I was nervous but excited to see it.

NEXT ERA IS LOOKING TO PLACE WIND TURBINES IN SCHULER COUNTY SUCH AS IN HECTOR. WELL THE HIGHEST LAND IN HECTOR HAPPENS TO BE THE FLNF. LARGE AREAS OF WOODS WOULD BE CLEARCUT FOR THIS TO HAPPEN. PRIVATE ENTERPRISE LOOKING TO MAKE A BUCK SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE OVER THE PEOPLES LAND. (SP. SCHUYLER)
