I prefer my friends' taste in fine red wines. Since they all claim to be experts. Usually it's great. But when they start telling me I need to accessorize the wine with special foods to accentuate the flavors I start to giggle.

Yes I can appreciate their obsessiveness.

But they're still under control of the wine god. And that ain't saying much.

More like a sophisticated "I'm a pansy" denotation.

Country Concord is good but a little sweet. Susie Q from Tickle hill is excellent. Its not a red but its one of my favorites. You can actually taste the skin of the grape. Strawberry Splendor from Goose watch is good after dinner in place of desert. "Piece of my heart" from Rasta Ranch is an awesome dark red.

I've never been a wine snob. I drink what I like. Some of these expensive wines are so dry they are bitter. I've never understood how people pay that much to drink something so so so ------yuk!

I tried this white wine from "Montezuma" - in a blue bottle - delicious; drank the whole thing at the whale watch!. I love Widmer's Lake Niagara - I love that "grapy taste"; I would love to know of a sweeter red wine to try - I always buy white - it just seems "safer". I don't like dry wines because it's just gross.

I can tell you Merlot made me gag at a wedding a few years back. I stick to the white wines also ever since then.

I drink reds mainly-Blueberry Breeze from Peach Orchard Farms-very very sweet, like drinking a blueberry pie, downed an entire bottle the minute I got to the State Fair!, Svenska Red from Swedish Hill(?-I think)this was the second bottle I downed at the Fair!, but the one and only white wine I will drink is Diamond from Torrey Ridge.

Gee, Buddy, we both like wine, huh? Hmmmmmmm, could be interesting............. You'll have to join me on a wine tour sometime..........

Shut up, Hola!!! I just know she's gonna chime in any minute now!!!

No, merlot is served at room temp - that's how it's SUPPOSED to taste

I understand not everyone likes dry reds but these Lake Niagra, Arbor Mist, fruit wine suggestions are making me crazy!

The health benefits of wine are generally referring to dry reds.

The health benefits of wine are mostly in red wine. But wouldn't sweet red wine give you the same health benefits as dry red wine?

We used to buy it b/c it was inexpensive and usually buy 2 get 1 or something, but I don't like the grape skins that have been at the bottom of 99% of the bottles I've purchased. I prefer Optimus, even though it's twice as expensive.

I like Red Cat but it is a bit too sweet for me anymore. Its great for parties but Ive kind of lost my taste for it over the years/gallons. Has anyone here tried Golden Spumante from Goose Watch winery. Its an excellent sparkling white wine. We take a little bit of this in a glass and then add some Strawberry splendor. Its fantastic!!!!!

Aww Gee SJ, I had to check, no grapeskins in bottom of bottle. Must have hit it just right, unless they dissolved. Never tried Optimus. I usually have SvenskaRed and a Merlot of some kind.
Gee I sure wish I could really see Ovidian and Buddy. Probably both descriptions are wrong.

Apparently dry red wines are better for you than sweet red wines

http://www.ynhh.org/online/nutrition/advisor/red_wine.html

A glass of red wine a day keeps the doctor away

Is red wine the fountain of youth or a potent poison? Is enjoying a glass of red wine with dinner each evening beneficial to your health? Current research suggests that a glass of red wine each day may be providing you with more than just a little relaxation.

What are the health benefits of drinking red wine?

For over 10 years, research has indicated that moderate intake of alcohol improves cardiovascular health. In fact, in 1992 Harvard researchers included moderate alcohol consumption as one of the "eight proven ways to reduce coronary heart disease risk." However, research has suggested that specifically red wine is the most beneficial to your heart health. The cardioprotective effect has been attributed to antioxidants present in the skin and seeds of red grapes.

Scientists believe the antioxidants, called flavonoids, reduce the risk of coronary heart disease in three ways:

by reducing production of low density lipoprotein (LDL)

cholesterol (also know as the "bad" cholesterol)

by boosting high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the good cholesterol)

by reducing blood clotting. Furthermore, consuming a glass of wine along with a meal may favorably influence your lipid profiles following that meal

Recently, researchers have found that moderate red wine consumption may be beneficial to more than just your heart. One study found that the antioxidant resveratrol, which is prevalent in the skin of red grapes, may inhibit tumor development in some cancers. Another study indicated that resveratrol aided in the formation of nerve cells, which experts believe may be helpful in the treatment of neurological diseases like Alzheimerís and Parkinsonís.

Which wines should you consume to reap the most benefits?

Researchers at the University of California, at Davis tested a variety of wines to determine which types have the highest concentrations of flavonoids. Their results concluded that the flavonoid favorite is Cabernet Sauvignon, followed closely by Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir. Both Merlots and red zinfandels have fewer flavonoids than their more potent predecessors. White wine had significantly smaller amounts than the red wine varieties. The bottom line is the sweeter the wine, the fewer the flavonoids. Dryer red wines are your best bet for a flavonoid boost.....

Honestly though Elmo no free man willingly goes to a wedding. Its like watching an innocent man being sentenced to a slow death by hanging. Other previously condemned men may go but only because they are eager to see another share their plight. After the sentencing they all get together and laugh and say poor bastard.

Ovidian, this was the wedding of the century! Any man would have LOVED to be at this one! Open bar for over 2 hours, Prime Rib and the Notre Dame game going on on the TV over the bar with the FREE drinks!!! Believe me, all the men there were HAPPY!
