Well the main menu of the game worked then when it went to load the level it froze I think. I think it might have been because I need a video card.

Guild wars is a memory hog, 512 megs of ram and at least a offboard video card would help you out a bunch.

OK i got a new problem....My PCI card that I told you guys about came today. SO i put it in and it installed without a problem. So it told me to finish installation I needed to restart my computer, so I did. And right before it goes to the desktop the screen goes blank. But everything is loading because I hear the start up sounds and everything, just the screen is black. So when I changed the settings for the primary video card thing I changed it to onboard.(?). But the game runs fairly well but the graphics leek out so I'm thinking it's my monitor not being plugged into the PCI video card slot.

O yeah the system requirements for the pci card need a AGP slot...But the card is a pci card.

And this is why I'm still using an AGP card. I prefer other people to be the guinea pigs and test out the new stuff and work the bugs out of it. Then when it goes mainstream I follow.

There really isn't any benefit yet to PCI X16 video cards. Give it a year or two when either the CPU's or actual GPU's are fast enough for anyone to see a difference.

I was thinking about getting a GeForce PC5300TM 128MB GDDR3 16x PCI Express Video Card (which will be running in the PCI slot) for my hp pavilion a705w. From what I heard it will run the game I have. (The game is called "guild wars")Here are the requirements

If I remember right this system only has regular PCI slots. So if the person wants to play games on it, the newest PCI video card would probably work best. PCI express video cards will not fit regular PCI slots.

Exactly.

Be very careful folks when you buy a computer. If you want to play games, make sure you know what those games require before you buy a computer.

Budget computers can make decent-ish gaming machines, especially if your gaming desires are relatively mundane. However, companies like HP will often dlliberately cripple machines like the a705w. HP doesn't want you adding a decent video card after the fact. They want you to buy the computer, become frustrated with its limitations, and buy an entirey new (and more expensive) HP computer to overcome those limitations.

It's not just limited to Macs. EMachines, Gateway, Dell, Apple, Compaq are all examples of brands that have used motherboards without AGP or PCIx16 video card slots mandating the use of "old" architecture PCI video cards. If you can still find a regular PCI video card it probably is a whole lot faster than the video card built into the motherboard. But they're a lower value compared to comparably priced AGP video cards.

I just noticed something that the question asker said, I need to know which port you have your monitor plugged into. Is it plugged into the card you just installed or into the original port on your machine.

Now to address the second part: when one buys a PC and wants to game with it any computer bought at a local Wal-Mart is not the best choice for it. If you compare the same machine to one of equil cost at say Best Buy you are going to find that the one at the electronics retailer has more features at the same cost.

Just to throw this in: Someone said above about PCI-E graphics having no benefits yet, I couldnt agree less. When you see 2 PCI-E Geforce FX 6800's on a Sli-bridge running UT2004 you would be amazed.

Well that's actually 2 video cards. Not really an apples to apples comparison.

Actually, Macs haven't used PCI for graphics in probably 5 or 6 years. All of their machines now use AGP, even if it's not a slot you can plug any old card into. Even the Mac mini's 32MB Radeon 9200 sits on an AGP bus.

I meant to say it's not just limited to HP's.
