The PCI slot is that little slot on the motherboard right? (it's under the AGP slot(where you put the video card)....It's like a tannish colour.) Because I am buying a PCI express card to run a game and need to know if that is the PCI card slot.

Thanks.

From right to left on the bottom of the image.
  • 3 ISA slots. Long black and quite long. Fairly prominent silver teeth can be seen inside the slot. This technology is being replaced. Many new boards may have only 1 slot or none at all.
  • 3 PCI slot. White, shorter slots. Longer section of slot closer to edge, shorter end further away.
  • 1 AGP slot. Brown (may be other colours on other boards). Physically set further away from the edge of the board than PCI or ISA slots. Often have a clip at the end furthest away from the edge of the board, similar to RAM clips.

If you have the money and an AGP slot available on your computer, I would recommend getting an AGP graphics card.

You're just slightly behind the times, dear, well-meaning as you are. PCI Express is a peripheral interconnect meant to replace both PCI and AGP. Indeed, PCI Express cards are considerably better than AGP cards. However, even if they would work with a conventional PCI slot, plugging a PCI-Express card into such a slot would undoubtedly cripple it (like plugging PC133RAM into a PC66 board).

This is not to say the original poster doesn't have a machine capable of suppoting PCI Express. Many new personal computers are now being shipped with this capability.

Here is a stab in the dark, The card you want to add is a new video card. I will let you know up front that if there is an AGP slot then there is no PCI-Express slot for your video. If you will give a little more information we can help you further untill then we can only speculate on what information you need.

If you are adding a new AGP video card go with the Nvidia FX series for gaming at least 256 megs of ram on the video card.

I'd also recommend Nvidia, but perhaps rather because they provide much better driver support for Linux than ATI manages to.

Well hey, I did answer the question. (S)he asked what a PCI slot looked like and not a PCI-Express slot. So I'm still with the times when I answered it correctly. heheheh

I was thinking about getting a GeForce PC5300TM 128MB GDDR3 16x PCI Express Video Card (which will be running in the PCI slot) for my hp pavilion a705w. From what I heard it will run the game I have. (The game is called "guild wars")Here are the requirements

Required System Specs:
Windows XP/2000/ME/98
800 MHz Pentium III or equivalent
256 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 8500 or GeForce 3 or 4 MX with 32MB of video memory
500 MB hard drive space
Internet connection
DirectX 8.0

Recommended System Specs:
Windows XP/2000/ME/98
Pentium III 1GHz or equivalent
512 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9000 or GeForce 4 Ti Series with 64MB of video memory
500 MB free hard drive space
Internet connection

If that express card does not work in the Standard PCI slot.(Which I think is true)

Then I would get a nVidia GeForce FX 5200 128MB DDR PCI Video Card.

Please let me know which one would run the game.

Or if I can or cannot run a PCI express card in a PCI slot.

Yeah, that machine doesn't appear to have either PCIe (PCI Express) or AGP slots.

While the game probably won't suffer from extra video memory, PCI's really not an optimal way to connect a video card (if it were, there wouldn't be AGP at all).

64MB video cards are pretty affordable. I'd suggest using one of those instead. The 128MB card wouldn't hurt, but at the end of the day you'd still have a low-end computer that's not built for gaming, and the investment isn't something you're going to be able to carry over into another machine very well.

Also, make sure the fact that it's a PCI card rather than AGP won't cause a problem for the games you have in mind. It sometimes does.

So would the nVidia GeForce FX 5200 128MB DDR PCI Video Card work for the game and not slow my computer down?

Working with the game is something I can't say for certain. I can say for certain that unless something is physically wrong with it, it definitely won't slow down the system.

Rather I'm concerned that it falls into the category of turbocharging a Tercel.

Guild Wars will play fine on a regular PCI Geforce FX 5200 actually I ran the beta of it on a system with a Geforce 2 with no problems what so ever. The video card will if you are currently using onboard graphics make things run faster since it will not have to rely on your systems memory.

On a side note Guild Wars was alright, but World of Warcraft is addicting as all heck.

LOL, I played World of Warcraft before and also Guild Wars. So I decided to buy Guild Wars. I was just wondering if that PCI card could run the game....Thats probably the only game I will have on here for awhile.

What if I tried running Guild wars On my computer with an intel extreme graphics?
Would it do anything bad to the computer?

Shouldn't. If it's not going to work, it just won't, but it's not going to melt your hard drive and send porn to your grandmother's e-mail account.
