well, playing devil's advocate...the circumstances are unique in that Trump has reportedly tried to fire him twice already. So he could realize such a case would be akin to a fireable offense anyway and therefore choose to do it on the way out. but, who knows!

If Trump is still president next year, I fully expect him to say this at some point: since no one ever again could be as good a president I am, I will just stay on for life for the benefit of America.
