Fervent Trump supporters are starting to back down

CNN's Erin Burnett revealed Monday that a major supporter of President Donald Trump canceled an appearance on her show because he couldn't defend the president's actions at his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Michael Anton became well-known as a Trump supporter during the campaign for penning an essay in defense of electing Trump called "The Flight 93 Election." He became a national security spokesman at the White House under Trump before leaving earlier this year.

A source familiar with the recording told CNBC that, in fact, it was Trump who raised the idea of paying McDougal with cash.

The source also said that it was Cohen who told Trump they would use a check to pay her if they ended up making such a payment.

In what can only be seen as a thinly veiled attempt to distract attention from the confirmation that there’s a tape of him talking about paying off a Playboy model with whom he allegedly had an affair, Trump teed off on the NFL once again Friday night. He called on Commissioner Roger Goodell to kick players out of a game if they kneel during the national anthem and to suspend them without pay for the season if they do it again.

If only the president would realize he isn’t an autocrat like the man he so admires, Vladimir Putin. You know, the one Trump fawned over on Monday despite knowing for more than 18 months that Putin personally ordered the hacking of our electoral process, which just so happens to be the cornerstone of our democracy.

But the Constitution and the ideals on which this country are founded mean little to Trump. If they did, he’d understand that the player protests have never been about the flag, the anthem, the military or the police. They’re about trying to draw attention to the racial and economic discrimination that continues to divide our country – a divide Trump deepens every opportunity he gets.

A conservative columnist for The Washington Post on Friday wrote that the current political climate makes him miss former President Obama, saying he would take the Democrat back in a “nanosecond.”

Max Boot was a foreign policy adviser in both of the Republican presidential campaigns against Obama in 2008 and 2012.

Despite his criticisms of the former commander in chief, Boot wrote that Obama’s presidency now “appears to be a lost golden age when reason and morality reigned.”


Boot wrote that he gained a “new perspective” on the Obama administration after watching him deliver a speech in South Africa on the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth.

“I was moved nearly to tears by his eloquent defense of a liberal world order that President Trump appears bent on destroying,” Book wrote.

Obama appeared to offer wide-ranging criticism of Trump in the Tuesday speech, saying “those in power seek to undermine every institution or norm that gives democracy meaning."

Boot said Obama’s speech was not full of self-praise or name-calling like many from Trump.

“Obama has a far better claim than Trump to being a ‘very stable genius,’ but he didn’t call himself one,” Boot wrote. “The sentences were complete and sonorous — and probably written by the speaker himself.”

“Imagine Trump writing anything longer than a tweet — and even those are full of mistakes,” he added.

Obama’s White House was also not full of the scandals seen in the current administration, Boot pointed out.0

Donald Trump may be experiencing the most difficult week of his presidency and is reacting by doubling-down again and again, according to a new report by the Wall Street Journal.

Trump is frustrated by being told he can’t be seen as too close to the Russian dictator who likely helped install him in office, being told he can’t criticize the Federal Reserve and that he can’t slam the intelligence agencies which have told the American people of Russia’s plot to support Trump in the 2016 election.

“All he’s hearing in D.C. is ‘you can’t do this, you can’t do that.’ He can’t criticize the Fed, he can’t criticize the intelligence community,” said a source close to Trump. “He’s obviously going to get frustrated by the can’t-do mentality.”

Trump will never listen to advice, the story said.

“The president doesn’t respect norms,” the source said. “Norms are rules written by somebody else.”

Even when his team thought they had agreed to a plan with Trump, he bungled it.

The plan before his meeting with Vladimir Putin had been to spin the indictments as a positive, with Trump set to “shove it in Putin’s face and look strong doing it.”

Instead he rolled over and gave equal creditability to Putin and American intelligence.

The Journal talked to Andy Card, chief of staff to President George W. Bush, who said this was likely Trump’s worst week yet.

“I think he had the most challenging week of his presidency in terms of living up to his own expectations,” said Card. “I do think he’s come to recognize that it didn’t go the way he thought it would go… I’m not sure he likes learning the lessons he’s learned.”
