Seneff: “New paper showing widespread presence of glyphosate in the urine of dogs and cats. Previous studies (Including one published by Anthony Samsel and myself) have shown that glyphosate is present at high levels in both dog and cat food, so this is probably no surprise. However, I was surprised to see that they found N-methyl glyphosate in the urine. The glycine equivalent of this would be N-methyl glycine, otherwise known as sarcosine. Papers have shown a link between sarcosine and prostate cancer.”

France Becomes First Country In Europe To Ban All Pesticides Linked To Bee Deaths

Through the enforcement of this ban, France has indeed moved beyond the apparent boundaries set by the European Union. While only three neonicotinoids had been outlawed by the EU, France went on to ban all five of them.

Moreover, this ban is applicable not only in outdoor fields but also within greenhouses.

Britain had initially opposed this ban, but they eventually came around after more evidence surfaced supporting this. More so, after researchers discovered these pesticides cause the mysterious “colony collapse disaster” among bees in Europe and elsewhere.

U.S. judge limits evidence in trial over Roundup cancer claims

U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria in San Francisco in an order on Thursday granted Bayer unit Monsanto’s request to split an upcoming trial into two phases. The order initially bars lawyers for plaintiff Edwin Hardeman from introducing evidence that the company allegedly attempted to influence regulators and manipulate public opinion.

Thursday’s order applies to Hardeman’s case, which is scheduled to go to trial on Feb. 25, and two other so-called bellwether trials which will help determine the range of damages and define settlement options for the rest of the 620 Roundup cases before Chhabria.

But Hardeman’s lawyers contended that such evidence, including internal Monsanto documents, showed the company’s misconduct and were critical to California state court jury’s August 2018 decision to award $289 million in a similar case. The verdict sent Bayer shares tumbling though the award was later reduced to $78 million and is under appeal.

Under Chhabria’s order, evidence of Monsanto’s alleged misconduct would be allowed only if glyphosate was found to have caused Hardeman’s cancer and the trial proceeded to a second phase to determine Bayer’s liability.

Pingree Calls USDA’s GMO Label ‘Deceptive’

“The USDA’s plan for labeling genetically modified food is an insult to consumers. What people across the country have asked for—and what Congress has passed—is more information and transparency about the food on the nation’s shelves. What USDA has produced is a marketing campaign aimed at putting a positive spin on GMO food. These labels should give people the facts of whether ingredients in their food have been genetically altered, plain and simple. It seems like USDA is trying to paper over those facts here. In the coming Congress, I will be working on the House Appropriations Committee to push against this deceptive campaign.”

GMO Free USA:

“The USDA and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue Screw America: The GMO labeling law (also known as the DARK Act signed by Obama in 2016) gave the USDA two years to finalize rules for national GMO disclosure. The rules are finally here and it is anything but disclosure and transparency. Some of the most egregious points in the finalized rules are: 1) It exempts highly processed GMO ingredients that can't be detected by current testing methods such as starches and oils made from GMO corn, soy and canola, sugar from GMO sugar beets and GMO high fructose corn syrup. That basically exempts nearly 80% of all GMO ingredients. 2) It exempts GMOs made from newer genetic engineering methods such as CRISPR. 3) It exempts food manufacturers that make less than $2.5 million. 4) The words "GMO", "genetically modified" or "genetically engineered" can not be used. USDA has replaced those words, commonly known to the public, with the word "bioengineered". And instead of the word "bioengineered", disclosure can be in the form of just a QR code that the consumer must scan with a smartphone or an 800 phone number that the consumer must call. This is COMPLETE BS. The USDA has wasted two years worth of taxpayer money to deliver a sham in the interest of Bayer-Monsanto, the American Farm Bureau, and GMO farmers. BOYCOTT GMOs.”

Final GMO labeling rule does not require labeling of highly refined ingredients from GM crops, if no modified genetic material is detectable, 20-Dec-2018 By Elaine Watson

In its final GMO labeling rule - released this morning - the USDA says it will not mandate the labeling of highly refined ingredients from GM crops if no ‘modified genetic material’ is detectable, but it will allow manufacturers to make voluntary disclosures on such products in the interests of transparency.

Shocking Report Shows Weedkiller Ingredient Glyphosate Causing Americans to Be Sicker and Dying Younger

Conclusion: Scientific evidence is rapidly growing that indicates Roundup and glyphosate leads to many serious and often health problems. Giving that this toxic chemical can cause diseases from cancer to dementia to autism, isn’t it time for more to be done to eliminate the use of glyphosate in agriculture? where are the alternatives? why hasn’t the EPA re-classified it as a human carcinogen?

As of this writing, at least 13 countries, including Germany and Belgium, have introduced legislation to limit or ban the use of glyphosate. More countries are considering it. However, in the US, the EPA continues to give the green light to glyphosate and Roundup use. Perhaps as more scientific evidence is revealed about the dangers of this chemical, the tide will turn against Monsanto and Roundup even in the United States.

Congress Finally Passed a New Farm Bill and It Continues to Pay Homage to the Cult of Corn and Soy

So, why exactly has the image of modern agriculture come to consist largely of herbicide-drenched GMO crops stretching to the horizon and livestock wallowing shoulder to shoulder in their own manure? The answer, in part, lies in the agricultural subsidy system: Farmers grow what the government pays them to.

American farmers who produce commodity crops — staples like corn, soy, wheat and cotton — are eligible for various forms of government assistance, generally lumped together under the broad banner of “subsidies,” which forms a central component of the Farm Bill produced by Congress roughly every five years. The latest version of this omnibus legislation was signed into law by President Trump late last year, bringing a long-raging debate over the merits of agricultural subsidies back to the fore.

The inner workings of subsidy programs is a subject best left to PhD economists, but, generally speaking, they kick in when demand for a particular crop falls. According to the laws of supply and demand…

...

Meanwhile, fruits, nuts and vegetables — known as “specialty crops” in industry jargon — account for only 10 million acres, or about three percent of cropland. We all know they’re supposed to account for more than that on our plates. Yet, specialty crops aren’t eligible for Farm Bill subsidies. One significant change in the newly passed Farm Bill was the inclusion of subsidies to help organic farmers transition through the three-year period between ceasing chemical sprays and acquiring certified-organic status — and the price premiums that come with it — which should help to bring many more acres under organic cultivation.

What Foods Are Banned in Europe but Not Banned in the U.S.?

The European Union prohibits many food additives and various drugs that are widely used in American foods.

A 1958 amendment to the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act prohibits the Food and Drug Administration from approving food additives that are linked to cancer, but an agency spokeswoman said that many substances that were in use before passage of the amendment, known as the Delaney amendment, are considered to have had prior approval and “therefore are not regulated as food additives.”

BHA and BHT
The flavor enhancers and preservatives BHA and BHT are subject to severe restrictions in Europe but are widely used in American food products. While evidence on BHT is mixed, BHA is listed in a United States government report on carcinogens as “reasonably anticipated” to be a human carcinogen.

Ecuadorian peasants and ecologists win battle against GM crops

The lawsuit was filed after monitoring by Acción Ecológica and the Ombudsman in the soybean producing areas of the country found that glyphosate-tolerant GM soybeans had been planted, despite the fact that Ecuador is constitutionally a country free of GM seeds and crops.

In a first hearing, the judge had ordered that monitoring be carried out, with the participation of the plaintiffs together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrocalidad, the Animal and Plant Health Regulation Agency. The monitoring confirmed that GM soybean is being planted illegally in the area.

Faced with this evidence, the judge granted the protection order and pointed out that GM crops violate the rights to life, health, work, a healthy environment and the rights of nature.

In his sentence the judge ordered the Ministry of Agriculture:

- to decommission, eliminate, and burn all the GM crops found in the monitoring programme

- subject to the sowing period, to confiscate, eliminate, and burn all batches of GM seed to prevent new sowings

- to establish a permanent surveillance program to prevent the planting of GM crops in Ecuador (except for research purposes)

- to establish training of officials and to the peasants of the region on the dangers of GM crops

- as a reparation measure, to include on the ministry's website the inscription "Ecuador is a GM-free country"

- to send a notice to the Prosecutor's Office of all the areas where GM crops were found, in order to identify responsibility, by action or omission, for the entry of GM soy.

Commenting, Richard Intriago of the Federation of Peasant Organisations of the Coast (FECAOL) said, "This is a historical event, because since Ecuador declared itself a GMO-free country, all efforts have been made to violate the Constitution. The judge's decision strengthens our struggle."

The president of the Federation of the Agricultural Center of Quevedo, one of the plaintiff organisations, said, "This is just the beginning of our struggle, because now we have to ensure that the judge's decision is complied with."

French court cancels Monsanto weedkiller permit on safety grounds

PARIS (Reuters) - A French court canceled the license for one of Monsanto’s glyphosate-based weed killers on Tuesday over safety concerns, placing an immediate ban on Roundup Pro 360 in the latest legal blow to the Bayer-owned business.

A court in Lyon in southeast France ruled that the approval granted by French environment agency ANSES in 2017 for Roundup Pro 360 had failed to take into account potential health risks.

Monsanto Roundup Trial Tracker: New Developments

The story was picked up by media outlets around the world, and promoted by Monsanto and chemical industry allies. Google advertisements were even purchased promoting the story.

Now, new information revealed in court filings indicates just how heavy Monsanto’s hand was in pushing the narrative. In a January 15 court filing, Plaintiff’s attorneys cited internal Monsanto correspondence dated April 27, 2017 they say show that Monsanto executive Sam Murphey sent the desired narrative to Kelland with a slide deck of talking points and portions of the Blair deposition that was not filed in court. The attorneys said the correspondence shows the Monsanto executive asking her to publish an article accusing Dr. Blair of deceiving IARC.

The public cannot see the actual internal correspondence between Monsanto and Kelland because Monsanto and Bayer lawyers want it sealed from public view.

And …

January 10, 2019 – For those wanting more details on the reasoning and ramifications of a federal court judge’s decision to limit large volumes of evidence related to Monsanto’s internal communications and conduct from the first federal trial, this transcript of the Jan. 4 hearing on the matter is informative.

Here is an exchange between plaintiff’s attorney Brent Wisner and Judge Vince Chhabria that illustrates the frustration and fear plaintiff’s attorneys have over the limitation of their evidence to direct causation, with much of the evidence dealing with Monsanto’s conduct and internal communications restricted. The judge has said that evidence would only come in at a second phase of the trial if jurors in a first phase find that Monsanto’s Roundup products directly contributed substantially to the plaintiff’s cancer.

Half of Michigan bumblebee species dropped by 50 percent or more

“It’s a loss of flowers. Many of the bumblebees that are stable fly mainly earlier in the season and so they’re more on trees and shrubs. And then, many of the bumblebees that have declined fly later in the season and they’re more in prairies and they’re more on herbs and forbs,” Wood explained.

Prairie areas in Michigan have been disappearing.

On top of that, a class of pesticides introduced about 25 years ago, called neonicotinoids, has been linked to declining bee populations.

“They’re acutely toxic to bees and they’re used in agriculture. Almost all the corn that’s planted in Michigan, and in the Midwest more generally, is treated with these insecticides,” Wood said. They're also used on some other crops such as sugar beets and soybeans.

Minnesota Becomes 5th State to Restrict Use of Monsanto Herbicide

Because of this, Minnesota just joined four other states in restricting the use of the chemical for the 2019 growing season.

The decision follows 253 complaints of dicamba drift in 2017, impacting a total of 265,000 acres.

After state restrictions were put in place for the 2018 growing season, the number of complaints of “dicamba drift” dropped dramatically to 53, affecting only 1,800 acres.

Tennessee achieved similar results after becoming the fourth state to restrict the use of dicamba a year and a half ago.

This year’s tougher restrictions — including a shorter spraying season and greater buffers around non-GMO crops — are expected to reduce crop damage even further.

Although essentially no studies or tests were conducted to prove the safety of dicamba before the EPA approved it, there is already at least one study linking dicamba to lung and colon cancer, and another study linking it to non-Hodgkis lymphoma.

Childhood Leukemia, the Microbiome, and Glyphosate: A Doctor’s Perspective by Michelle Perro, MD

Nevertheless, studies in rodents are considered to be relevant to human health – and such studies have found that the gut microbiome of these laboratory animals is sensitive to glyphosate-based herbicide exposure. Long-term exposure of rats to three different doses of Roundup (including one lower than the level permitted in drinking water in the EU) caused alterations in the gut microbiome.[17] Significantly, the alterations corresponded to those observed in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, obesity, and systemic inflammation.[18] [19] In a separate study, medium- and long-term exposure of mice to Roundup altered the gut microbiome in terms of decreasing the abundance of certain bacteria. Roundup-treated mice showed an increase in anxiety and depression-related behavior, which was possibly caused by Roundup-induced gut dysbiosis (imbalance in the microbial community) and thus impaired gut-brain communication.[20]

There’s a Toxic Weed Killer on the Menu in K-12 Schools Across the US

Exposing children, with their developing bodies, to a chemical that can cause cancer and hormone dysfunction is wrong. It’s especially wrong for children simply eating breakfast at school, who often are from low-income families. This fact has spurred the nonprofit Center for Environmental Health (CEH), where I serve as the senior scientist, to measure glyphosate contamination in breakfast cereals and bars served at schools. Although our study was small, the results were striking.

We found significant contamination in 70 percent of the products we tested, including big name brands like Quaker, whose glyphosate contamination was more than six times the safety threshold developed by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Cheerios, whose glyphosate contamination was more than five times the EWG safety threshold.

Canada sees no cancer risk from Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer

Canadian farmers will continue using glyphosate after Health Canada concluded that the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer poses no human risks.
The federal agency dismissed eight notices of objection and assertions made in the so-called Monsanto Papers in 2017.

“After a thorough scientific review, we have concluded that the concerns raised by the objectors could not be scientifically supported when considering the entire body of relevant data. The objections raised did not create doubt or concern regarding the scientific basis for the 2017 re-evaluation decision for glyphosate,” Health Canada said in a press release.

Let’s tackle glyphosate this year - Letter to the Editor of Martha’s Vineyard Times

The bottom line is that glyphosate (marketed as Roundup, among other brands) is incredibly unsafe. As to whether it causes cancer, the most generous statement is that the science is unclear. But dig a little deeper. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, many of the studies that cleared glyphosate were actually funded by Monsanto (now part of Bayer AG). And not only is glyphosate harmful when it is sprayed, it stays harmful even after it breaks down.

Drawing this back to our beautiful Island, there are many reasons that we are better off taking glyphosate products off our shelves, and finding alternatives. And that is an important first point: There are alternatives to glyphosate, including safer chemicals, natural products, and even goatscaping.

And finally, I would like the dispel the notion that we cannot move to ban glyphosate and other chemicals because everyone uses them. We once had widespread use of lead paint and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). But when we found out that they were extremely dangerous, we stopped using them. We can do the same for any of the numerous chemicals on the market now that we know are unsafe.

Monsanto Hires Internet Trolls to Cover Up Roundup’s Cancer Risk - 2017

Internet trolls, paid for by Monsanto, have been scouring the internet to hide the ugly truth about the herbicide Roundup and the dangers of glyphosate, while the chemical giant worked with government regulators to declare the product safe to use, even though it "probably" causes cancer.

According to court documents, Monsanto hired third parties to search out negative comments about their products and counter them with pseudo-scientific research commissioned by the company itself.

Mike Papantonio, of America's Lawyer, predicts that Monsanto will pay heavily in a jury trial and describes how the company even has trolled The Ring of Fire, while manipulating the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

In the wake of that report, Monsanto stepped up their efforts to keep the public in the dark about the dangerous product. Dr. William Moar, a Monsanto executive, said at a conference in 2015 that the company had "an entire department" with the sole purpose of "debunking" science that threatened their bottom line, like the IARC report.

The Supreme Court Ruling Upheld India’s Law, not Monsanto’s False Claims on Patents on Seeds by Dr Vandana Shiva, 9 January 2019

Without a patent on Bt Cotton Seed Monsanto has been collecting royalties form farmers. Monsanto illegally introduced Bt Cotton and illegally claimed royalties increasing the price of cotton seeds by 80,000%, this is the primary reason for farmer’s debt and suicide in the cotton area. It continues to falsely claim that it has a patent on Bt Cotton including a distortion of Supreme court order of 8th January 2019 which upheld Article 3j of India’s Patent Law which does not allow patenting of seed.

Health Canada stands by approval of ingredient in Roundup weed killer

After the decision, eight objections were filed, many of which said the evidence used to approve the product was tainted because Monsanto had influenced the results.

Their accusations were largely based on documents filed in a U.S. lawsuit in which a former groundskeeper was awarded a multimillion-dollar settlement after jurors decided his cancer was linked to glyphosate.

Seneff: “Charles Benbrook has a new paper out where he compares the US EPA with IARC in terms of why they came up with such different decisions on glyphosate's cancer risk. This Web article does a good job of summarizing the paper.”

How did the US EPA and IARC reach opposite conclusions about glyphosate’s genotoxicity?

New analysis shows EPA relied on secret industry studies, which found ‘no effect’ from glyphosate, rather than published studies, which mostly found the chemical was genotoxic

Now a new peer-reviewed article answers the question of how and why the US EPA and EFSA reached diametrically opposed conclusions to IARC about glyphosate’s genotoxicity.[1] The article shows that the EPA relied on unpublished industry studies, 99% of which found that glyphosate was not genotoxic, whereas IARC relied on published studies, 74% of which found that glyphosate was genotoxic.

The EPA's "no genotoxicity risk" judgement on glyphosate was essential to its "no carcinogenic risk" classification of the chemical. The article shows that only by framing and constraining its genotoxicity assessment in a highly selective and biased way was the EPA able to conclude that glyphosate was not genotoxic. It also demonstrates that the EPA's cancer classification – as well as EFSA’s, which was based on the same data and was reached in a similar way – is scientifically baseless. Overall, the article shows that the way pesticides are assessed for risk is not fit for purpose and exposes people and the environment to unacceptable risks.

The paper is authored by Dr Charles Benbrook and is published in Environmental Sciences Europe.

The article’s key findings in detail are as follows.

1. EPA relied on secret and biased industry studies, whereas IARC used published studies

EU Parliament adopts strong recommendations to protect health and environment from pesticides

Yesterday, the Greens/EFA Group published a study demonstrating that the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in its assessments of the health effects of glyphosate partly plagiarised assessments directly from Monsanto (now Bayer), the glyphosate producer that led the Glyphosate Task Force. The BfR adopted the chemical giant's own assessments of the potential damage to humans and the environment from glyphosate, without clearly indicating the true source in their final report. In doing so, the BfR dismissed all independent scientific studies indicating potential carcinogenic effects.

Bart Staes, rapporteur on the Special Committee on Pesticide Authorisation report, commented:

"The European Parliament has listened to EU citizens, who expressed calls through the European Citizen Initiative (ECI). In conducting its work, the PEST committee has not bowed to the pressure of the pesticides lobby and is demanding strong action to protect health and the environment. The overwhelming support for reform of the pesticide authorisation procedure is a wakeup call for EU governments and the Commission and also a success for the ECI and public protests throughout the glyphosate debate.

"The Special Committee has brought to light serious shortcomings in the authorisation of pesticides. We must now put an end to the secrecy, the conflicts of interest and the fact that governments are depending too heavily on chemical giants such as Monsanto. The copy and paste in the approval case of glyphosate must be a lesson for more transparency and independent assessment in the authorisation of dangerous substances.

"The Committee could not resolve the controversy around the carcinogenicity of glyphosate and for that reason has asked for a systematic review of all relevant science. The next round of decisions on whether to ban glyphosate from our fields will be in 2022. Any future decision on glyphosate must fully consider independent scientific studies and ensure objective and transparent decision-making around the cancer risks and threats to biodiversity that glyphosate poses.

The United States has an Epidemic of Processed Food — and it’s Killing Us

What?! I simply couldn’t believe that this was the case. Why don’t more people know how much food matters? Why don’t doctors talk about it? And most importantly, why aren’t we doing anything to fix it?

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves with too many questions. I’d like to return to the grocery store to unpack what’s really wrong with all of the processed food I grew up with — the food that simply seemed too tasty and convenient to live without.

GMO Free Rochester: “It is odd that this type of growing food would be considered organic— especially because it doesn’t meet the requirements for a plant or animal to be qualified for the organic label in the US. Seems that so many lines are getting blurred as time moves along—even basic understandings and concepts.”

CENTER FOR FOOD SAFETY FILES LEGAL ACTION TO PROHIBIT HYDROPONICS FROM ORGANIC

Washington, D.C. – Today, Center for Food Safety (CFS) filed a new legal action demanding the Department of Agriculture (USDA) prohibit hydroponic operations from the Organic label. Hydroponic production systems—a catch-all term that applies to food production methods that do not use soil—do not meet federal organic standards and violate organic law, which requires that organic farming include soil improvement and biodiversity conservation. Hydroponic systems cannot comply with the organic standard's vital soil standards because hydroponic crops do not use soil at all. The CFS filing was endorsed by over a dozen other organic farmer, consumer, retailer, and certifying organizations, including the Organic Farmers Association, Northeast Organic Dairy Producers Alliance (NODPA), PCC Community Markets, and the Cornucopia Institute.

"Mislabeling mega-hydroponic operations as 'organic' is contrary to the text and basic principles of the organic standard. Right now there is a pitched battle for the future of organic, and we stand with organic farmers and consumers who believe the label must retain its integrity," said George Kimbrell, CFS legal director.

Consumers trust the organic label and pay extra for the assurance that it indicates a more healthful and environmentally-friendly way of producing the food they buy. Since the federal Certified Organic label was introduced more than twenty years ago, the organic food market has grown exponentially and is now a $60 billion industry in which multinational corporations have bought organic brands and compete with small food producers growing food using environmentally-friendly methods.

"Allowing hydroponic systems to be certified as organic undercuts the livelihood of organic farmers that take great lengths to support healthy soil as the bedrock of their farms," stated Kate Mendenhall of the Organic Farmers Association. "Hydroponic producers getting the benefit of the organic label without actually doing anything to benefit the soil undermines the standard and put all soil-based organic farmers at an untenable economic disadvantage."

The Sobering Details Behind the Latest Seed Monopoly Chart

As four seed companies now control more than 60 percent of the global market, a seed policy expert argues that consolidation poses major risks to our food supply.

Howard’s newly updated seed chart is similar but even starker. It shows how weak antitrust law enforcement and oversight by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has allowed a handful of firms to amass enormous market, economic, and political power over our global seed supply. The newest findings show that the Big 6 (Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta, Dow, Bayer, and BASF) have consolidated into a Big 4 dominated by Bayer and Corteva (a new firm created as a result of the Dow–DuPont merger), and rounded out with ChemChina and BASF. These four firms control more than 60 percent of global proprietary seed sales.

Howard began his annual tracking of seed industry ownership changes in 1998, a year that served as a turning point for industry consolidation. Two years after genetically engineered (GE) varieties were introduced in 1996, by 1998 the large agribusiness companies had accelerated their consolidation by buying up smaller firms to accumulate more intellectual property (IP) rights. By 2008, Monsanto’s patented genetics alone were planted on 80 percent of U.S. corn acres, 86 percent of cotton acres, and 92 percent of soybean acres. Today, these percentages are even higher.

Can You Tell Which GMOs Will Be Labeled under the NBFDS?

The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard requires some food producers to put labels on some products that contain GMOs. Unfortunately, there are two glaring problems with this law that mean consumers will still not be able to tell what is in the food they are eating. Let’s take a closer look at disclosure options and exemptions under the NBFDS.

These examples make it painfully clear that this law does not deliver the transparency American citizens have been demanding for decades. Most people do not walk around with an encyclopedic knowledge of GMO risks and regulatory details. They certainly cannot tell if an ingredient has detectable GMO DNA just by looking at an ingredient panel—no one can. How could anyone ever know if a product lacks a BE disclosure because it is truly non-GMO or because it falls into one of the many exempt categories in this law?

The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard doesn’t label all types of GMOs, but the Non-GMO Project still does because conscientious consumers like you demand it. We will continue to listen to shoppers and provide the trustworthy labeling that the USDA has failed to offer. Unlike the NBFDS, the Non-GMO Project Standard includes all products of biotechnology, not just the convenient ones. It follows ingredients back to their source rather than exempting processed ingredients, because the Non-GMO Project knows you can’t start with a GMO ingredient and process it into something that somehow isn’t the product of genetic engineering.

Non-GMO Project Verified will remain the most trustworthy and accessible way for consumers to avoid GMOs. The Non-GMO Project will continue to support consumers by offering GMO transparency under North America’s most rigorous standard for GMO avoidance.

12 Reasons Why Even Low Levels of Glyphosate are Unsafe By Zen Honeycutt, Founding Executive Director Mom’s Across America, Children’s Heath Defense Coalition Partner

The detection of glyphosate in these foods has set off alarms of concern in households and food manufacturers’ offices around the world. Lawsuits have sprung up against companies that make food products that claim to be “100% Natural” and yet contain glyphosate residues. These lawsuits have been successful. Debates, using the argument that “the dose makes the poison,” have been pushed by media. Speculation is that these media outlets are funded by advertisers that make or sell these chemicals or have sister companies that do, and threatening their profits would be unwise for all involved – except the consumers.

It is time to set the record straight…

Here are 12 reasons why there is no safe level of glyphosate herbicide residue in our food or beverages.

Clearly, it is time for food and beverage manufacturers to have a zero tolerance for glyphosate residue levels and for the US EPA and regulatory agencies everywhere to stop ignoring the science and to revoke the license of glyphosate immediately.

Today's letter to the EPA: Neil, Thomas and Khue,

We now fully understand how the EPA could find glyphosate not carcinogenic. You used studies funded by the industry rather than the peer-reviewed studies that the IARC used. This is not only cherry picking, it is a deliberate twisting of science to produce the outcome that you clearly are most comfortable with...one that protects the profits of the corporations.
See Charles Benbrook's new paper : https://hygeia-analytics.com/…/2019-paper-on-glyphosate-ge…/

Many people want to write you off completely, they are telling me to give up on the EPA- that you are fully corrupted. Is this true? Or will you review the studies that the IARC reviewed and deliver a decision that actually takes into consideration the final formulation, as it is sprayed on our food? Will you actually take into consideration the health of vulnerable babies and pregnant women?

France bans glyphosate.
https://www.fwi.co.uk/…/france-bans-monsanto-weedkiller-rou…

We hope you will respond immediately and tell us that you will reconsider your decision and review the studies the IARC used. In the meantime will you put a moratorium on glyphosate herbicides and protect the American people as France has protected their citizens?

Sincerely,

Glyphosate Causes Cancer: EPA “Trade Secret” Sealed Files Reveal Cancer Link Known Back in the 1970s - 2015

Dr. Samsel is a research scientist and consultant who has been studying the toxicity of glyphosate, the world’s most prevalent herbicide used in commercial agriculture on GMO crops, for many years now. He has authored several papers with Dr. Stephanie Seneff on the toxicity of glyposate, including:

The biotech agricultural community has laughed off these studies primarily by attacking Dr. Samsel and Dr. Seneff’s credentials on this topic.

However, they are not laughing anymore.

In this interview, Dr. Anthony Samsel states that he now has documents received from the EPA which are “trade secret” documents belonging to Monsanto. These documents allegedly are safety studies about glyphosate from the late 1970s to the early 1980s, and others beyond those dates.

The documents reference animal studies, according to Samsel, with short-term and long-term studies conducted on mice, rats, rabbits, and dogs. Monsanto allegedly asked the EPA to seal these documents as “trade secrets” so no one else could review the data from these studies.

Samsel discusses one particular study on rabbits that looked at the effects of glyphosate on the skin. They monitored the rabbits’ blood chemistry, and one of their findings found an increase of lactate dehydrogenase, an enzyme in the blood related to tissue damage.

Another study, according to Samsel, showed that glyphosate went right into the animal’s bone marrow. Samsel claims this is dangerous, because new cells are born in the marrow and pass on to the thymus gland, where T-cells and white blood cells are eventually formed. Samsel considers this significant, especially in light of the recent WHO report that listed glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic” in causing non-Hodgkin lymphoma and prostate cancer.

Next Samsel discussed long-term studies conducted in rats that lasted 26 months. He considers those studies very significant. The reason they are very significant, is because they used a control group and much lower doses of glyphosate. Most people believe that the higher the exposure to the herbicide, the greater the effect. Samsel stated that glyphosate has an “inverse dose response relationship,” and that this is clearly shown in the Monsanto “trade secret” studies.

According to Samsel, these studies from 1978 to 1980 by Biodynamics in New Jersey clearly showed tumor growths in many organs at low doses of glyphosate. These studies were submitted to the EPA in 1981. The studies showed significant tumor growth in organs such as the kidneys, but these studies were dismissed as “not significant,” primarily by allegedly manipulating the control groups.

In Part 2, Dr. Samsel explains how one of the ways Monsanto was able to dismiss results of their studies was by using a standard lab animal feed supplied by Purina, which is known to increase carcinomas. This animal feed was in the “control” animals, to minimize the effects of the results in animals exposed to glyphosate. Samsel states that he has “several studies” that show this link between the lab feed and cancers.

Herbicides as Ripeners for Sugarcane

Abstract: Chemical ripening of sugarcane is an important component to profitable sugar production in the United States as well as other sugarcane industries throughout the world. Harvesting of sugarcane often begins before the sugarcane reaches the desirable maturity level. This is especially true in the Louisiana sugarcane industry where the window for harvesting is limited because of the risk of freezing temperatures encountered in a temperate climate. Research on the application of chemicals, mostly of herbicide origin, to enhance sucrose accumulation (ripening) or limit flowering to conserve stored sucrose has been conducted for more than 60 yr. The only sugarcane ripener currently registered for use in the United States is glyphosate applied before harvest. The herbicide fluazifop is used as the primary ripener of sugarcane in South Africa. The herbicides glyphosate, fluazifop, and sulfometuron-methyl and the growth regulators ethephon and trinexapac-ethyl are registered for use in Brazil. There is a continuing need to evaluate sugarcane ripeners to increase the utility of currently registered ripeners and to find additional ripeners for use by sugarcane industries. The need for alternatives to glyphosate is especially critical before a glyphosate-tolerant sugarcane can be utilized to improve control of problematic weeds.Nomenclature: Ethephon; fluazifop; glyphosate; sulfometuron-methyl; trinexapac-ethyl; sugarcane, Saccharum interspecific hybrid.

In a blow to Bayer, judge to allow controversial evidence in Roundup cancer trials

Chhabria on Monday said plaintiffs could introduce some evidence of Monsanto's alleged attempts to ghostwrite studies and influence the findings of scientists and regulators during the first phase of upcoming trials. He said documents which showed the company taking a position on the science or a study introduced during the first phase were "super relevant."

The company had hoped the judge would take a harder line on such evidence following a Jan. 3 order by Chhabria restricting evidence of corporate misconduct. At the time, that decision lifted Bayer's shares nearly 7 percent.

Monsanto had argued much of this evidence was a "sideshow" that would only distract jurors from the scientific evidence.

Plaintiffs' lawyers contended some evidence of corporate misconduct was inextricably linked to their scientific claims.

The judge appeared to agree with them, saying it was difficult to draw the line between scientific evidence and allegations of corporate misconduct, and questioned whether it would be fair for the jury to not hear about the company's alleged attempts to influence scientists.

The order applies to Hardeman's case, which is scheduled to go to trial on Feb. 25, and two other upcoming cases. There are some 620 Roundup cases before Chhabria, out of more than 9,300 nationwide.

Glyphosate and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

We have all long awaited the day when a trial against Monsanto, linking glyphosate—the main ingredient in the herbicide Roundup—to cancer, would result in a large settlement in favor of the plaintiff. That day has finally arrived. Robert Schooler...

Cornell Student Who Took on Bill Gates, Monsanto Plans to Expose Their Agenda Even Further in Blockbuster New Project

But the school’s ongoing GMO propaganda-fest is being countered by a renegade student and filmmaker named Robert Schooler, whose latest project aims to expose Cornell and Gates’s GMO agenda on a level not seen in years.

“Hey Cornell, remember me? Your beloved hippie student who can’t stand the fact that you’re so cozy with Monsanto and the Biotech GMO industry?” Schooler asks in a video announcing plans for the aforementioned new film project.

“Remember when (in that course) your professors claimed that the glyphosate ingredient in Roundup is safer than table salt and coffee?” he continues. “That we need GMOs to solve world hunger?”

“Remember when midway through (their pro-Biotech) course I learned that all the professors making these wild claims along with the deans of the Ag school, were all copied in emails from Monsanto, their PR firms and other biotech corporations?”

“Remember when I decided to host my own independent GMO course at Cornell, free from Monsanto influence?

“Well that’s why I’ve decided to create a documentary film about my experiences, well more like an open letter to you and also to Bill Gates, Bill Nye and Neil DeGrasse Tyson…and everyone else who considers themselves to be pro-GMO.”

Schooler hopes his first film, titled GMO WTF (which stands for Grow More Organic Wholesome Tasty Food), will receive the funding it needs through its GoFundMe page, which can be found by clicking here.

Check out his must-watch video announcing the project by clicking below:

With his friends from the GMO WTF lecture series all expected to contribute, Schooler plans to expose the truth on topics including:

-GMO (and industrial) agriculture
-Monsanto (“and their pals” in the GMO industry)
-The current state of our universities (like Cornell)
-Academic freedom & scientific integrity
-Other similar topics including a new way forward

China Soon to Announce Tight Glyphosate Residue Controls on Food Imports

According to multiple sources, China will soon be introducing extremely low maximum residue limits (MRLs) for glyphosate on many imported raw food materials and all final food products, but it will likely remain the world's largest exporter of the highly toxic chemical.

GM Watch: “The agenda to sneak GMOs into our foods advances.”

GMO foods could soon be mislabelled as biofortified

This is an extremely worrying report. The Codex Alimentarius is a collection of internationally adopted food standards which has a huge influence on national and regional food laws and practices.

We have already gone through the sordid history, in detail, of how the draft definition of Biofortification had been infused with the disease of GMOs.[1] I won’t repeat that history here. Just know that, now, the term Biofortification will have huge ramifications for the entire World. If the pro-GMO forces can succeed in continuing to hide their genetic-engineered foods within the definition of Biofortification and in using its appealing, natural-sounding name to sell their GMO foods, then consumers will be deceived on a worldwide scale.

Analysis: Wins and Losses in the Farm Bill—Time for a Green New Deal

(Beyond Pesticides, December 19, 2018) As the dust still settles on the final Farm Bill, which passed the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives last week, it is clear that neither the substance nor the process on a range of issues meet the urgent need to address key sustainability issues that put the future in peril.

We must not allow this Farm Bill to be the final word on a number of critical environmental and public health issues facing the nation and world. That is why it is absolutely critical that we get to work immediately, with the new Congress, to set a new course that transforms the institutions of government that are holding back the urgently needed transition to a green economy.

On the Farm Bill, our victories were mostly measured in terms of what we were able to remove from the legislation—not the standard of achievement that we need to face critical environmental threats.

The good. Our major victory in the Farm Bill does not move us forward, but simply protects the status quo of our democracy—protecting the power of states and local government to adopt pesticide restrictions that are more stringent than the federal government. With your help and the help of a broad network of local officials nationwide, we were able to stop a preemption provision from being inserted in the federal pesticide law. Although the victory was in defeating this provision, the chemical industry has awakened a new front in the pesticide reform movement. As a result of this provision, there is new momentum to reassert the rights of local governments and repeal state-level preemption of municipalities. Other environmental setbacks to the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and farmworker protection were taken out of the final bill. A great thanks to those who participated in this important process.

The bad…

Glyphosate Causes Changes to DNA Function Resulting in Chronic Disease, According to Study - 2016

(Beyond Pesticides July 18, 2016) A review of the scientific literature links glyphosate, one of the most popular weed killers in the U.S. and the active ingredient in Roundup, to a wide range of diseases through a mechanism that modifies DNA functioning, adding a new even more troubling dimension to the herbicide’s cancer classification by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. According to the most recent review, Glyphosate pathways to modern disease V: Amino acid analogue of glycine in diverse proteins, conducted by independent scientists Anthony Samsel, Ph.D. and Stephanie Seneff, Ph.D., a scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), glyphosate acts as a glycine analogue that incorporates into peptides during protein synthesis. In this process, it alters a number of proteins that depend on conserved glycine for proper function. According to the authors, glyphosate substitution for glycine correlates with several diseases, including diabetes, obesity, asthma, Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Parkinson’s disease, among others.

Study of the allergenic potential of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ac toxin following intra-gastric administration in a murine model of food-allergy

Abstract: ...Seven weeks after, mice were intragastrically challenged and allergic reactions along with diverse allergy related immunological parameters were evaluated at systemic and intestinal level. The groups immunized with, Cry1Ac, OVA/Cry1Ac or OVA/CT developed moderate allergic reactions, induced significant IgE response and increased frequencies of intestinal granulocytes, IgE+ eosinophils and IgE+ lymphocytes. These same groups also showed colonic lymphoid hyperplasia, notably in humans, this has been associated with food allergy and intestinal inflammation. Although the adjuvant and allergenic potential of CT were higher than the effects of Cry1Ac, the results show that applied intra-gastrically at 50 μg doses, Cry1Ac is immunogenic, moderately allergenic and able to provoke intestinal lymphoid hyperplasia. Moreover, Cry1Ac is also able to induce anaphylaxis, since when mice were intragastrically sensitized with increasing doses of Cry1Ac, with every dose tested, a significant drop in rectal temperature was recorded after intravenous challenge.

"Effects and tastes of pesticides" by Gilles-Eric Séralini and Jerome Douzelet. Debate evening debate 1st February 2019.

The two experts recall that the wine has no maximum limits of residues, those which are sometimes dishonestly applied to it, are those of wine grapes and table grapes. However, they are high enough that the doses detected in the wine, are always lower. Reassuring? Not really. Indeed, take for example the nice Boscalid, Professor Séralini explains that it is enough to 16ml of wine (the bottom of a glass) to be exposed to the risks of a chronic intoxication! There is no dose of no effect, contrary to what we are led to believe by pesticide manufacturers, health authorities and wine professionals. Drinking a non-organic wine already exposes you to significant risks to your health, in addition to financing a deadly viticulture for its workforce and its neighborhood.

At the stage of detecting pesticides in water, 85% of the testers detect pesticides at least once, 58% each time.

Now you will know that when you find an aroma of strawberry, banana or other non-organic wine, it is actually the taste of the pesticides it contains and the dryness in the mouth is not explained by the content in alcohol!

These co-formulants would be up to 1000x more toxic than glyphosate alone. While the latter isolated, would not succeed in killing your herbs called "bad", an adjuvant alone would arrive without problem. Worse, it would also destroy human kidney cells in less than 1h30 in the lab!

New research confirms GM causes massive off-target damage to plant genomes

In addition to identifying multiple complete and partial GM gene insertions, numerous large rearrangements of the plant genome were detected. Furthermore, epigenetic (gene regulatory) changes were also identified that could have a wide range of effects, from the silencing of the introduced GM gene to alterations in function of multiple host gene systems.

New gene editing techniques, which rely on tools such as CRISPR, often involve the use of Agrobacterium in order to deliver this system into plant cells and in some cases to insert new genetic material into the genome. Thus, new gene editing GM techniques will not solve the problems highlighted by this new study.

In addition, the tissue culture process that is an obligatory part of all GM processes, including gene editing, is already known to cause mutations on a vast scale. So the implications of the new paper from the Salk researchers are that the tissue culture-induced mutations will be piled on top of the damage caused by the Agrobacterium-mediated GM transformation process.

In other words, the new findings won't enable genetic engineers to prevent DNA damage in the first place, but only to more easily spot the lines in which they have caused the most unintended damage.

Seneff: “Glyphosate Girl is back in court taking notes on the beginnings of a new lawsuit against Monsanto in San Francisco on glyphosate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.”

A BLENDED BIFURCATION by glyphosategirl

You may remember my fury about the trial bifurcation that Monsanto requested and Chhabria granted. Bifurcation means that the trial will be divided into two phases. Phase 1, or the “general causation phase”, will address whether scientific research says that glyphosate causes NHL. If the jury says that it can, Phase 2 will take place to assess punitive damages and liability. Only then will Plaintiff counsel be able to unleash the reams evidence of Monsanto’s deceptive behavior promoting glyphosate. Bayer’s attorneys won a strategic victory here, but they should take their (certainly gilded) moral compasses in for a check-up.

Monsanto similarly discredits all parties and organizations who know the glyphosate/Roundup/GMO truth. We are all part of this so-called sideshow. Sadly, we’ve all believed their lines for decades, but Mother Nature did not. There is a limit to how much we can pollute and damage our earth without consequences – like the widespread declines in human fertility over the past decade (btw, glyphosate slows human sperm motility and hampers ovarian folicular dynamics and gene expression in lambs). At the current rate of decline, I’m not sure my kids’ generation will be able to have children.

You may remember the report written by Dr. James Parry, who was hired by Monsanto to perform an analysis as to whether glyphosate can cause cancer. After Parry concluded that glyphosate and Roundup may be genotoxic, Monsanto sought a different scientist to say that glyphosate is not genotoxic. Monsanto’s criticism of the Parry report is highlighted in an internal email that the Plaintiff used in the Johnson trial, in which Monsanto’s Dr. Heydens wrote that Monsanto was not going to do the further genotox testing of the products that Dr. Parry suggested.

Monsanto claims that showing the email would simply be a “sideshow” that doesn’t have place in Phase 1. Monsanto continues that the Parry report itself doesn’t have a place in the science phase because it isn’t really a thorough scientific analysis. Chhabria counters that Monsanto WOULD have viewed it as a thorough analysis if it had reached a different conclusion.

That Mouse Tumor

OK readers – remember the 1983 Knezovich and Hogan mouse study and the mystery tumor? Briefly: the mystery tumor refers to the mouse study performed by Monsanto that showed that glyphosate caused cancer in the mice. The EPA subsequently labeled glyphosate as a carcinogen. Monsanto then hired a scientist to take another look through the slides and determine if anything was missed in the first search for cancer evidence in the mice. Lo and behold, this scientist found a tumor in the control group, thereby rendering the mouse study statistically insignificant and refuting the EPA’s carcinogen categorization.

Monsanto argues that internal Monsanto/EPA correspondence memos regarding Monsanto’s strategy to change the study outcome to non-carcinogenic should not be allowed until Phase 2. Chhabria, in a somewhat amused tone, asks if Monsanto’s recommendation would be that the jury should hear that initially there was no tumor found in the control group but later they found one. And that the jury shouldn’t learn the story about how the conclusion changed.

NOW – GET THIS!

Wisner describes that in their own review of the mouse slides in question, all of the slides were available to review EXCEPT the slide that questionably shows the control group tumor. That specific slide has been corrupted and can’t be analyzed.

There is a pause in the room. Chhabria looks a bit amused because the fact that the only slide that can’t be recovered is the controversial slide makes Monsanto look pretty bad. Wisner doesn’t even need to say a word, but emotionlessly says that maybe the slide was simply reviewed too many times back in the 80s and became unreadable.

Other Details

Wisner completed twelve hours of deposition of Monsanto employees…

“The Cry toxin mode of action, we and others have noted, does not necessarily discriminate between
species. Any organism with a membrane-lined gut is, in principle, vulnerable if it consumes
the GMO Bt crop. In these Bt crops the leaves, straw, roots, nectar, and pollen, all typically
contain Cry toxins. Therefore, most organisms in agricultural landscapes will at some point in

DOJ Releases Formal Approval of Toxic Mega-Merger between Bayer and Monsanto

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Justice today formally announced its green light for the Bayer-Monsanto merger, conditional to further divestments from the two companies. This decision comes after DOJ received over one million public comments urging the agency to block the merger and overwhelming concern by farmers across the country.

The divestitures will do little to restore bargaining power to family farmers, ensure farmers have access to diverse seed varieties and prevent seed prices from rising. During this time of low commodity prices and struggling farm economy, DOJ failed to listen to the more than 93 percent of polled farmers and over 90 percent of Americans who are concerned about the merger.

In response to the merger’s approval, Tiffany Finck-Haynes, pesticides and pollinators program manager with Friends of the Earth, issued the following statement:

The approval of the Bayer Monsanto merger is a disaster for American farmers and families. This toxic mega-merger will only further entrench the failing model of chemical intensive agriculture, which is poisoning people and the planet. The Department of Justice failed to protect Americans from yet another toxic agricultural monopoly.

Our agricultural economy has become a game of corporate Russian Roulette, eliminating consumer choice and decimating family farms. These woefully inadequate concessions are a blatant sign that the Department of Justice cares more about protecting corporate profits than defending the interests of the American public.

In July 2016, Congress passed a law mandating that all food containing genetic material that has been modified with recombinant DNA or “gene-splicing” techniques bear labels clearly identifying it as “bioengineered.” The statute acknowledged that bioengineered food is neither more nor less safe than other food, but the new rule—the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard, or NBFDS—won’t help consumers understand that. It will only leave them confused.

Under the NBFDS, two identical bottles of corn oil on a supermarket shelf could be labeled differently—one as bioengineered, one not—even though both were derived from the same field and are identical in processing and quality. Both labels would comply with the regulation because the new rule doesn’t require a label “if the food does not contain detectable genetically modified material.” The NBFDS allows manufacturers to make voluntary disclosures on such products, but not that they “may contain” bioengineered ingredients.

...

If anyone in the U.S. Congress is serious about making the federal government work for the American people instead of against them, they’ll take action to stop the USDA from doing this very stupid thing as soon as possible.

Disclosures

As a reminder, GMO foods won’t say they contain GMOs, they will say they are “bioengineered food.” However, many products will not even say that. A text disclosure is just one of four main options available. Food manufacturers have a few choices when it comes to disclosing GMO content:

Exemptions

While the disclosure methods are confusing and burdensome, the exemptions allowed under the NBFDS are even more perplexing. With all of these loopholes, just a fraction of products that contain GMOs will be labeled at all. Animal feed, pet food, and personal care products are not covered at all. Only products that contain detectable GMO DNA will be labeled—this is a huge problem because so many processed foods contain untestable inputs such as beet sugar and canola oil.

No scientific consensus on GMO safety

Hilbeck et al. Environmental Sciences Europe (2015) - Open Access Discussion

Abstract: A broad community of independent scientific researchers and scholars challenges recent claims of a consensus over the safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In the following joint statement, the claimed consensus is shown to be an artificial construct that has been falsely perpetuated through diverse fora. Irrespective of contradictory evidence in the refereed literature, as documented below, the claim that there is now a consensus on the safety of GMOs continues to be widely and often uncritically aired. For decades, the safety of GMOs has been a hotly controversial topic that has been much debated around the world. Published results are contradictory, in part due to the range of different research methods employed, an inadequacy of available procedures, and differences in the analysis and interpretation of data. Such a lack of consensus on safety is also evidenced by the agreement of policymakers from over 160 countries - in the UN’s Cartagena Biosafety Protocol and the Guidelines of the Codex Alimentarius - to authorize careful case-by-case assessment of each GMO by national authorities to determine whether the particular construct satisfies the national criteria for ‘safe’. Rigorous assessment of GMO safety has been hampered by the lack of funding independent of proprietary interests. Research for the public good has been further constrained by property rights issues, and by denial of access to research material for researchers unwilling to sign contractual agreements with the developers, which confer unacceptable control over publication to the proprietary interests.

The joint statement developed and signed by over 300 independent researchers, and reproduced and published below, does not assert that GMOs are unsafe or safe. Rather, the statement concludes that the scarcity and contradictory nature of the scientific evidence published to date prevents conclusive claims of safety, or of lack of safety, of GMOs. Claims of consensus on the safety of GMOs are not supported by an objective analysis of the refereed literature.

2 There are no epidemiological studies investigating potential effects of GM food consumption on human Health

It is often claimed that ‘trillions of GM meals’ have been eaten in the US with no ill effects. However, no epidemiological studies in human populations have been carried out to establish whether there are any health effects associated with GM food consumption. As GM foods and other products are not monitored or labelled after release in North America, a major producer and consumer of GM crops, it is scientifically impossible to trace, let alone study, patterns of consumption and their impacts. Therefore, claims that GM foods are safe for human health based on the experience of North American populations have no scientific basis.

Neonic Pesticide May Become More Toxic in Tap Water

Yet again, our government scientists—the oft neglected but so important brain trust of our Nation—bring the public some very important new data. Pesticide water monitoring experts at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) paired up with scientists from the University of Iowa in a federally-funded collaboration to track neonicotinoid pesticides or “neonics” in tap water, including the potential to form chlorinated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) from the pesticides and their metabolites that may be more toxic than the original compounds. And, the news isn’t good…

Latham…

T. Jonas: “Have a read of Jonathan Latham's excellent account of what's behind the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation & their CERES2030 initiative - absolutely naked greed and abuse of power.”

The Gates Foundation’s Ceres2030 Plan Pushes Agenda of Agribusiness - 2018

This then is the context for a new Gates Foundation endeavor, Ceres2030, launched at the recent gathering of the Committee on World Food Security in Rome, Italy, on October 16. Co-funded with the Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development with a starting grant of $3.1 million, Ceres2030 is a nonprofit based at Cornell University.

Ceres2030 is also a partnership with the International Food Policy Research Institute of Washington, DC, and The International Institute for Sustainable Development of Winnipeg, Canada — organizations, detractors will note, with solid neoliberal credentials and strong corporate connections.

The endgame for Ceres2030, according to Porciello’s Cornell presentation, is to publish “7 to 11” highly visible academic reviews in Nature magazine in early 2020 designed to showcase and promote science specifically chosen by Ceres2030, the Gates Foundation, and behind them, it is harder than ever to doubt, agribusiness.

Whoever conceived it, the creation of a specific organization for the express purpose of infiltrating the scientific literature at the very highest level represents an expensive and sophisticated marketing and PR strategy. And it appears that Nature magazine is already lined up. Nature has decided that pay-to-play is consistent with reputable science publishing. It is a business model that should remunerate Nature handsomely. The apex of the scientific literature is exceedingly valuable real-estate. It will buy priceless influence with policymakers — unless, that is, someone informs them exactly how it was achieved.

Jonas: “And another grim piece from Jonathan (Latham) on gene drives - a topic we'll be discussing in Rome next week at the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food & Agriculture…”

Gates Foundation Hired PR Firm to Manipulate UN Over Gene Drives by Jonathan Latham, PhD - 2017

“There is no transparency about who is influencing decisions on the future of global ecosystems, people’s livelihoods, or our food system,” said Dana Perls of Friends of the Earth, U.S. “Gene drives could have profound ecological, health and socio-economic impacts, and the emails reveal a secretive attempt to game the system by gene drive proponents aiming to minimize regulations and oversight.”

Despite the public perception that conservation and public health are what motivates gene drive research, it is known that, besides the contribution of the Gates Foundation, most gene drive funding comes from the DARPA, the technology foresight arm of the US Dept of Defense.

“Gene drives are a powerful and dangerous new technology and potential biological weapons that could have disastrous impacts on peace, food security and the environment, especially if misused,” said Jim Thomas of ETC Group. “The fact that gene drive development is now being primarily funded and structured by the US military raises alarming questions about this entire field.”

https://www.independentsciencenews.org/n...fYxNueeBbj_AWgU

Jonas: “And then there's this piece on the Gates Foundation, 'The Gates Foundation maintains that “access to diverse, nutritious foods is fundamental to good health” but its food related investments go almost exclusively to the fast food industry. A stunning $3.1 billion went to companies like Coca Cola, McDonald’s, Pepsico, Burger King, and KFC in 2012. The Foundation has $1 billion tied up in the world's largest supermarket chain, Walmart, which is a major force driving out small farms in favour of large suppliers. The Gates Foundation has also bought $23 million in shares of the world's leading producer of genetically engineered crops, Monsanto.”

Latham: “This paper by Joseph Baines is exceptionally useful. How the biofuel industry was born. It details a grand ole 20yr fight for the soul of American agriculture between the ADM/Monsanto/JohnDeere/Bunge/Tate and Lyle/Dupont and Union Pacific Railroad nexus representing corn ethanol versus the Bayer/Kraft/Walmart/the meat industry (Wendy's/Burger King/Purdue/Smithfield) nexus wanting corn as feed for cows and hogs and chickens. The outcome is why 35% of all corn now goes to fuel cars (badly).”

Rigging the Science of GMO Ecotoxicity by Jonathan Latham, PhD

The resulting crops are usually called Bt crops. Cry toxins kill insects that eat the GMO crop because the toxin punches a hole in the membranes of the insect gut when it is ingested, causing the insect to immediately stop feeding and eventually die of septicaemia.

Cry toxins are controversial. Although the biotech industry claims they have narrow specificity, and are therefore safe for all organisms except so-called ‘target’ organisms, plenty of researchers disagree. They suspect that Cry toxins may affect many non-target species, even including mammals and humans (e.g. Dolezel et al., 2011; Latham et al., 2017; Zdziarski, et al., 2018).

Off-target toxicity

The Cry toxin mode of action, we and others have noted, does not necessarily discriminate between species. Any organism with a membrane-lined gut is, in principle, vulnerable if it consumes the GMO Bt crop. In these Bt crops the leaves, straw, roots, nectar, and pollen, all typically contain Cry toxins. Therefore, most organisms in agricultural landscapes will at some point in their life-cycle be exposed to GMO plant material. As pollinator declines and a more generalised insect apocalypse have revealed, the question of the effects of such crops on biodiversity is far from trivial.
