Happy to see this move forward as long as not a single taxpayer dollar is used, including accepting any "partnership" that potentially makes us liable for damages, injuries, etc. It's a horrible location for a museum.

It's sad that this looks more like a preservation effort searching for a use of the building. If there were a viable use the building would have been fixed long ago. Buildings are not just some artifact you fix and preserve. There needs to be some use for it otherwise you just spent money on a place the really contributes nothing or worse -- continues to cost money to just keep it from falling apart.

The NYS Parks Dept took ownership from Cornell and still did little to nothing to preserve it for decades.

Maybe folks might want to focus on purchasing the gas station and mini-mart just west of Parrot Hall, along with the mini-storage and insurance offices. Why? Kanadasaga. How about reconstructing that site instead of a dilapidated building and I bet tourists would be more interested in a reconstructed fortified native village destroyed by General Sullivan than some lab with no real world changing discoveries.

I'm betting the grant applications for that would be easier than a building owned by NYS for years. Just a suggestion.

And the visitors to Kanandasaga wouldn't be competing for parking with the NYSAES employees.

Tacitus gets the prize. So you open a museum there, where are the large crowds going to park?? Come on folks! We need a reconstructed indigenous village in this town! This is such a better opportunity.

Not that I would disagree, what attractions/features might that take form of?

there are two vacant properties across the street from parrott hall that most likely will be torn down by cornell/NYS

a parking area could be there for a museum

Has there been any discussion of what the museum will display? I know NYSAES has had a number of achievements, I'm just having trouble seeing how they would be turned into museum content.

Tacitus and Bluezone have great input. My take is that he state put info boards up in front of the place years ago and they were largely ignored and removed. If there were some great interest in what the AES was doing then the idea would have taken root long ago.

I think a museum of science and technology would be outstanding considering that's what Cornell is known for.

I don't think that building would be a good venue for that. A much bigger facility would do it justice and maybe they set aside a parcel in the AG/Tech park to do that. I just don't think that Parrot Hall can just be adapted for something like that and do it well. Or use the property across the road where they are demoing the other houses for such a museum.

I see there has been some cleanup at Parrott Hall. A sign of good things to come?

Waiting to see a sustainable model for construction and ongoing costs.

What's going on with the $400,000 the State granted for rehabilitation?

Hmm. 400K for rehab? When was this announced? Was the grant just to stabilize the building or was it for some proposed use or program for the hall?

Between hiring "preservation consultants" to do some studies on the building conditions and the work recommended to save the structure I'm betting that money would be all used up.

Thanks for the link. I agree that the City, while helping obtain grants, should not be liable for the project. If the Friends want to get this done, find liability and workers comp insurance. As I suspected, the 400K is really to perform roof and building repairs and not to renovate the building.

There will be a lot more money needed to make a go of anything at that building and that depends on a realistic plan for what the building will be used for and what sustainable operations will be there going forward.

The effort seems to be waning. I wonder how much longer the State will give the City and the Friends to get it together.

Let's say you restore the building, bring it up the requirements for disabled access, and install a number of displays depicting the history of the Station, even manage to hire staff to maintain the building. Just the elevator will cost huge money.

What then? Where do the throngs of visitors park? With Food Science re-opening, there are very few parking spots available. Are the utilities separate from the Station, or do we expect Cornell to give it free access to power, water, sewer, etc.?

A well-intentioned but misguided effort.
