It's time to do away with schools, they don't work anyway and cost too much.

Sheriff: Standoff in Romulus leads to felony charges, discovery of AR-15

Seneca County Sheriff Tim Luce reports that on Sunday around 2:34 p.m. deputies arrested a Romulus man following a domestic incident and standoff.

Kelly B. Drennen, 59, of 5687 Colonel’s Dr. Romulus was arrested after a domestic incident — where an unidentified female victim escaped from his residence, reporting that he was armed with a pistol and had threatened her with it. The female victim also reported that Drennen had choked her during the incident.

Deputies responded to the scene and attempted to make contact with Drennen but he refused to cooperate and would not come out of his home. Luce says that deputies set up a perimeter and called in negotiators, who spoke with Drennen throughout the incident. He eventually exited the home peacefully and surrendered to deputies.

Drennen was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal obstruction of breathing and 11 counts of unlawful possession of certain ammunition feeding devices.

He was arraigned in Varick Town Court where he was remanded to the Seneca County Correctional Facility in lieu of $300 cash bail or $600 secured bond. An order of protection was issued on behalf of the victim, as well.

Sheriff Luce says that Drennen posted bail and was released from the jail.

The New York State Police, New York State DEC Police, South Seneca Ambulance, Seneca County E-911 and New York State Electric & Gas also assisted during the incident.

Isn't the bail low, considering the violence, felonies and the illegal weapon?

OK. 1.5

*************************************************************

We're only 11 weeks into 2018, and there have already been 17 school shootings where someone was hurt or killed. That averages out to 1.5 shootings a week.

The parameters CNN followed in this count are:

A shooting that involved at least one person being shot (not including the shooter)
A shooting that occurred on school grounds
We included grades K through college/university level
We included gang violence, fights and domestic violence
We included accidental discharge of a firearm as long as the first two parameters are met

From Finger Lakes Times March 23, 2018.

In Seneca Falls, the March For Our Lives rally planned for 11:30 a.m. Saturday at People’s Park has been heavily advertised with a poster carrying the familiar phrase: “Thoughts and Prayers are not enough!” The thoughts-and-prayers phrase — in the wake of any mass shooting — is the catch-all expression politicians routinely use to push aside citizen cries for controls on guns, particularly controls on assault-type weapons.

These out-of-touch politicos always say it’s too early to discuss such issues. It’s a strategy that has worked for politicians for decades, including most of our own Congressional representatives here in the Finger Lakes. Discussion about how to stop the carnage simply never happens.

The historical success at avoiding the issue led these pious-pols to expect the public would yet again meekly grieve after the shooting deaths of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, just as much of the nation has done for years following shootings in Sandy Hook, Columbine, Las Vegas and many, many other places. But the politicians grossly underestimated the fury and competency of the Parkland teen survivors, their community and the increasingly frustrated mood of the nation about political inaction.

They also didn’t take notice that the teens have studied 20th century political history. The students and others supporting the #NeverAgain movement — joined by the increasingly energized Women’s Movement — are skipping the long game completely, instead aiming to force a massive turnover of incumbents in Congress now.

Morally there is only one way to deal with this. The live coverage of the march today has been very powerful. Having lived in our area for my whole life, I know many gun owners and have never felt unsafe. My friends are not the problem. It is unfair for them to be swept up in this mess but it is too late. I fear that the need for background checks and eradication of assault weapons outside of military uses is a perfect storm, one that lurches us toward the apocalypse. My friends get scary when they talk about any of this. Sadly their pronouncements about the Second Amendment and the NRA's amazing political clout will simply perpetuate the carnage. It is so easy to find someone who will get purple with rage either to defend their ownership or advocate for more controls. Such is the situation that faces us. Keep in mind that in the last thirty years in this country more people have died from gun violence than all the soldiers who died in wars in the 20th century. Doing nothing is not an answer.

Sadly, the one who needs it the worst is the president.

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/12/01/psychiatrists-warn-trump-becoming-more-mentally-unstable.html

Published 5:51 PM ET Fri, 1 Dec 2017 Updated 11:53 AM ET Mon, 4 Dec 2017

A Yale psychiatrist says President Donald Trump has become increasingly mentally unstable in the past week.

Dr. Bandy Lee says Trump's behavior puts the U.S. and the rest of the world at "extreme risk of danger."

Lee points out a series of tweets by Trump, his use of a racial slur against Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and his reported questioning of whether a tape of him boasting of groping women is fake.

You are wrong about Trump, but if you were right we might need guns more than ever.
No. I am not. I have seen 10 year olds that have better mental stability than Trump. If a 10 year told as many lies as Trump, he would be in trouble all the time with his parents and his school, etc.

Oh, all the sudden you're in favor of better mental health guidelines... for gun ownership as well, no doubt.

How very convenient and duplicitous of you.

https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a19587477/the-gun-debate-is-over/

The conversation’s over because at some point there’s no use talking any longer. I know plenty of people who want reasonable gun reform, including many gun owners. I bet you do, too. They see, like most rational people see, that there is no good reason on God's green earth to hand out assault rifles to children.

But I don't know a single person who wants to take a shotgun or a rifle from the hands of a hunter or a handgun away from a sane homeowner who wants to feel protected in her own home. And I bet you don’t, either. Who’s coming for their guns? No one. How many more children have to die before they are convinced? None. Because the protesters no longer are interested in trying to convince them.

Again Kyle, just because I post a link with information that contradicts your beliefs doesn't mean I made a mistake. I simply posted someone else's information that contradicts your information. So you would be the one making the mistake by thinking I agree with it.

Your first mistake is to assume that I'm a Liberal Democrat, over the last 40 years, I've voted Republican, Democratic and Independent, now with that out of the way, let's take a closer look at fact and not assumption. How many people of Asian, African or Middle Eastern decent went into a school or crowded public place here in the United States solely for the purpose of killing as many people as possible? Let that permeate your mindset for a moment, then we can have a mature debate...ok? whistle

No. Trying to understand why you would post a link to something you do not agree with. I can think of no reason why that would make any sense. I suspect you just read it quickly and thought if it makes me look bad, you would post it regardless of whether it might be true or not. It came from USA today. After reading it myself, I am surprised such a reputable news source would publish it even if it was clearly stated as someone's opinion.

You seem to think your opinion is the only one that matters. I see your posts as just an attempt to sway public opinion in your anti-American socialist favor.

No. My opinion is not the only one that matters. But you linked to a post that was a newspaper article that said it was an opinion. And it was quite easy to prove that opinion was factually wrong.

I certainly do not feel I have a anti-American socialist view point. But like the majority of Americans I am strongly opposed to our current president with his views based on the many many lies that come out of his mouth on a daily basis.

In my email box on 4/4/18:

********************************************************

Fellow New Yorker,

Last fall, I pushed for legislation to close a loophole to ensure domestic abusers are required to surrender all firearms, not just handguns.

Thousands of you signed our petition, and I am happy to say our efforts have paid off. Over the weekend, I signed into law a bill that will remove firearms from those who commit any domestic violence crimes.

The link between domestic violence and gun violence is clear. Research shows when a domestic abuser has access to a gun, the homicide risk goes up 5 times. Removing guns from domestic abusers is a common-sense measure that will save lives.

The recent wave of mass shootings in our country is horrifying, and the federal government’s failure to act in any meaningful way is unconscionable.

Our gun laws are already the strongest in the nation, and with this legislation, we are going even further and will continue to lead the fight to end gun violence. Help share the good news.

I thank you for your advocacy and your support.

Sincerely,

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

If Mueller recommends impeachment, as now seems a good possibility, is that an anti-American socialist outcome?

Let me remind you that the US is failing when it comes to education and China will soon be the world's largest economy. China will someday OWN this country. Besides if the idea works who cares where it came from. You are a socialist but most of all you are a pompous, narcissistic, socialist.

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/china-economy-america_us_58c98e4ae4b0cb7d28ce673f

These Charts Show Why China’s Economy Won’t Overtake America’s Anytime Soon

Nevertheless, the prospects for China’s economic growth are brighter than America’s; over time, China is likely going to continue to rise relative to the U.S.

The key lesson from 2016 is that this trend is no longer going to be smooth and steady ― it might take longer than analysts currently expect. Going forward, there could be more years, similar to 2016, when America’s GDP grows faster than China’s. The 2016 reversal, along with potential for further weakness in the yuan, will push back estimates of when China’s dollar GDP will surpass America’s. It is likely to occur sometime between 2027 and 2033, not between 2018 and 2026, the prevailing forecast.

In other words, the U.S. will likely remain the largest economy in the world for at least the next 10 to 15 years.

That's if you really believe the US economy is doing as well as they say. Have you noticed that nobody talks about inflation anymore even when food and everything else costs twice as much as it did 10 years ago ? Minimum wage hikes, health insurance premiums doubling, loss of high paying manufacturing jobs, property taxes keep going up.Collage tuition at $40,000 to $60,000 a year, school taxes going through the roof and the only jobs available pay $20,000. Look at Seneca County, every small business is looking for help but nobody wants a low paying job in retail but they really aren't qualified for anything else. This country is failing faster than you think !

One of you mentioned getting back on topic? I reference back to March 9, 2018 when this thread was created, somehow the fact that students, parents and concerned citizens came out in throngs to protest gun violence but now observe a narrative resulting in an speech on economy? Maybe we are conflating the two but either/or reveals record gun violence while our economy took upon it self a record budget deficit, amazingly two factors that Republicans wish not to talk about.

Ya Maybe you are right.

The Congressional Budget Office on Monday forecast the return of trillion-dollar deficits in 2020, in the nonpartisan agency's first budget update since the enactment of President Donald Trump's tax cut law last year and the big spending bill this year.

Being an engineer we wouldn't expect that you would get the connection between gun violence and school safety. In case you haven't noticed bomb threats seem to be on the rise. Guns are just one of a number of issues pertaining to school safety. Online classes would be an answer and are becoming more popular with colleges and universities. You claim to be an expert engineer but can't grasp the fact that gun violence in schools wouldn't exist if there were no schools.
Also the fact that China is now the #2 economic world power it would be reasonable to assume their system of education works and our decline may indicate that we may be doing something wrong.

Being an individual with common sense and comprehension, it's clear and quite evident that there is something afoul going on in your life. For what ever reason, you're looking for some attention because the thread was created on the topic of gun violence but you've offer one solitary off the cuff remark which has no relevance to the subject at hand, along with your last remark, please make the connection of approximately 40 posts pertaining to youths and guns and maybe you can equate that one economic rebuttal as being relevant.

March for Our Lives Rally...yeah, I see the common thread (No pun intended" whistle

LOL, apparently I've made your day Sir by responding to one irrelevant individual who is wishing and hoping for some type of attention, well, you've garnered it by reminding me of mental health and it's relevancy to gun possession. My youngest Grand is 8 years old and Papa would be very disappointed in her if she mimicked your actions, entirely inappropriate for someone your age.

Addendum, I deem it unacceptable to laugh at your immaturity, my BAD!!!!

Living in China is not easy. When there are more than 1.5 billion people like you in a country with no social guarantees, you don’t have a choice other than to fight and claw your way up. Chinese kids, though, are quite ready for such a challenge because their hard work starts with the very first year at school.

I used to work as an English teacher at four different schools in China, and it’s very interesting for me now to compare the European and Chinese approaches to education.

1. Many Chinese schools don't have central heating so both students and teachers leave their overcoats on in the winter.

The education system is based on verbatim learning. Children just sit and learn lots of material by heart, while teachers demand automatic reproduction without really caring about whether their students actually understand what they say.

Chinese children study for more than ten hours a day.

Many schools take corporal punishments for granted

Sounds a little like it was here in the USA, when this country was made into the greatest country in history. Hard work and discipline never hurt anyone, now our kids are fat and lazy.

We're only 16 weeks into 2018, and there have already been 20 school shootings where someone was hurt or killed. That averages out to 1.25 shootings a week.

We are not the land of liberty. That's a song.

This is a disturbingly violent place.

The United States is the country where children are shot & killed in school every single week.

We are the nation of police brutality and mass incarceration.

We must be honest here.

I don't know. I am sure that there were some of all those things in every country. But the numbers of the US vs all these other "civilized" countries is so far out of line that any comparison like that is silly. Their numbers are hardly a blip on the radar screen compared to us.

A middle school boy allegedly opened fire at an Indiana school Friday morning, police said, leaving a teacher and another student injured, the latest in a string of school shootings this year.

The suspected shooter, a student at Noblesville West Middle School, located about 27 miles north of Indianapolis, asked to be excused from class and then returned to the room armed with two handguns, Noblesville Police Chief Kevin Jowitt said at a news conference.

The teacher and student victims were shot in that room, Jowitt said, adding that the situation was resolved quickly and the suspect was taken into custody.

Really? I said that? I say any adult who owns a gun should make sure a 13 year old can not get their hands on it. Or else the adult is responsible for what happens.

Kyle. I agree with you, sort of, we should do something to avoid school violence, but you are blaming the wrong tool. Prescription drugs are to blame. Please do a little homework and find that these shooters are on psychotropic drugs that alter personalities. The kids that do the killing are on DRUGS! Prescription drugs, but then again, that doesn't conform to your agenda. Please educate yourself beyond the tool used or you are part of the problem.

Are some of them on drugs? Very likely. I think there are many reason for school violence and all reasons should be investigated.

wow. What is my agenda? I support the second amendment. I support the right of all abiding adults to own guns. I also support sensible gun laws that I am sure could be strengthened in many areas such as background checks for all gun sales. So you think prescription drugs are the sole cause of school violence?

When President Donald Trump on Thursday met with victims, families and others affected by the shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas, which left 10 people dead and 13 wounded, at least one parent was not impressed with his demeanor, continuing a pattern of the president failing to show empathy during tragedies.

Rhonda Hart, whose daughter, Kimberly Vaughan, was among eight students who died in the shooting last month, told The Associated Press her conversation with Trump “was like talking to a toddler.”

All of them? I doubt that very much. Where do I do this "little" homework? I read a lot of news media reports on these shootings and have seen little about that.
