From Finger Lakes Times March 23, 2018.

In Seneca Falls, the March For Our Lives rally planned for 11:30 a.m. Saturday at People’s Park has been heavily advertised with a poster carrying the familiar phrase: “Thoughts and Prayers are not enough!” The thoughts-and-prayers phrase — in the wake of any mass shooting — is the catch-all expression politicians routinely use to push aside citizen cries for controls on guns, particularly controls on assault-type weapons.

These out-of-touch politicos always say it’s too early to discuss such issues. It’s a strategy that has worked for politicians for decades, including most of our own Congressional representatives here in the Finger Lakes. Discussion about how to stop the carnage simply never happens.

The historical success at avoiding the issue led these pious-pols to expect the public would yet again meekly grieve after the shooting deaths of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, just as much of the nation has done for years following shootings in Sandy Hook, Columbine, Las Vegas and many, many other places. But the politicians grossly underestimated the fury and competency of the Parkland teen survivors, their community and the increasingly frustrated mood of the nation about political inaction.

They also didn’t take notice that the teens have studied 20th century political history. The students and others supporting the #NeverAgain movement — joined by the increasingly energized Women’s Movement — are skipping the long game completely, instead aiming to force a massive turnover of incumbents in Congress now.

Eleven teens killed daily!!!

By texting while driving!

High time we banned smartphones and driving for teens!!

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of basements go un-cleaned.

Abolish child labor laws! Put them back to work where they will be too tired to think about getting high and shooting up schools!!

Morally there is only one way to deal with this. The live coverage of the march today has been very powerful. Having lived in our area for my whole life, I know many gun owners and have never felt unsafe. My friends are not the problem. It is unfair for them to be swept up in this mess but it is too late. I fear that the need for background checks and eradication of assault weapons outside of military uses is a perfect storm, one that lurches us toward the apocalypse. My friends get scary when they talk about any of this. Sadly their pronouncements about the Second Amendment and the NRA's amazing political clout will simply perpetuate the carnage. It is so easy to find someone who will get purple with rage either to defend their ownership or advocate for more controls. Such is the situation that faces us. Keep in mind that in the last thirty years in this country more people have died from gun violence than all the soldiers who died in wars in the 20th century. Doing nothing is not an answer.

Very well said.

We really need to make drug testing and psychological evaluations mandatory for all students

Sadly, the one who needs it the worst is the president.

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/12/01/psychiatrists-warn-trump-becoming-more-mentally-unstable.html

Published 5:51 PM ET Fri, 1 Dec 2017 Updated 11:53 AM ET Mon, 4 Dec 2017

A Yale psychiatrist says President Donald Trump has become increasingly mentally unstable in the past week.

Dr. Bandy Lee says Trump's behavior puts the U.S. and the rest of the world at "extreme risk of danger."

Lee points out a series of tweets by Trump, his use of a racial slur against Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and his reported questioning of whether a tape of him boasting of groping women is fake.

You are wrong about Trump, but if you were right we might need guns more than ever.

No. I am not. I have seen 10 year olds that have better mental stability than Trump. If a 10 year told as many lies as Trump, he would be in trouble all the time with his parents and his school, etc.

Oh, all the sudden you're in favor of better mental health guidelines... for gun ownership as well, no doubt.

How very convenient and duplicitous of you.

https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a19587477/the-gun-debate-is-over/

The conversation’s over because at some point there’s no use talking any longer. I know plenty of people who want reasonable gun reform, including many gun owners. I bet you do, too. They see, like most rational people see, that there is no good reason on God's green earth to hand out assault rifles to children.

But I don't know a single person who wants to take a shotgun or a rifle from the hands of a hunter or a handgun away from a sane homeowner who wants to feel protected in her own home. And I bet you don’t, either. Who’s coming for their guns? No one. How many more children have to die before they are convinced? None. Because the protesters no longer are interested in trying to convince them.

Why are you ignoring this? I have posted several times over several days now starting five days ago.
