Reed hears concerns of area dairy farmers

U.S. Congressman Tom Reed, (R-Corning) met with leaders in the dairy industry Friday, Sept. 22 to hear their concerns in Western New York.

Reed came prepared to promote the Republican plan to overhaul the federal income tax code to “modernize” and “lower rates as much as possible across the board.” However, the topics that dominated the meeting with dairy farmers centered on immigration and the fears of the guest workers who are an integral part of the agricultural labor force both here in New York’s 23rd District and all across the United States; and international trade restrictions on dairy, especially with Canada, which the farmers accuse of “dumping powdered milk on the world market, lowering prices and putting us out of business.”

Hosted by George Mueller, owner of Spring Hope Dairy in Stanley, the meeting also included Skip Jensen of New York Farm Bureau, and Tim Harner and Jody Smith, Chief Legal Officer and Senior Market & Policy Analyst for Upstate Niagara Dairy Co-op respectively.
