NFL commissioner, LeBron James blast Trump for tweets against athletes

Miranda Green

By Miranda Green, CNN

Updated 11:13 AM ET, Sat September 23, 2017

President Donald Trump came under harsh criticism Saturday from the NFL and some of the NBA's top players after he blasted prominent athletes for kneeling during the national anthem, putting himself in the center of a controversy with significant racial and cultural undertones.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell slammed Trump in a statement Saturday morning, calling the President "divisive" for remarks he made at a rally in Alabama Friday night, while one of the most famous athletes in the world, LeBron James, called Trump a "bum" for a Saturday morning tweet aimed at the Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry.

Trump responded to the criticism later Saturday in a series of tweets, saying that playing for a sports league is a "privilege" and that players should not be able to disrespect the American flag or the US without risking being "fired."

"If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect ...." Trump tweeted. "Our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem. If not, YOU'RE FIRED. Find something else to do!"

Trump's tweets and harsh reaction highlight an extraordinary moment -- the President, NFL commissioner and a top basketball player embroiled in a public fight over unity and patriotism.
Goodell said Trump's criticism of NFL players kneeling in protest during the National Anthem show a "lack of respect" for the league and its players.

"The NFL and our players are at our best when we help create a sense of unity in our country and our culture," Goodell said in the statement. "There is no better example than the amazing response from our clubs and players to the terrible natural disasters we've experienced over the last month. Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities."

Trump Withdraws Invitation to White House After Stephen Curry Says He’s Opposed to Going

by Phil McCausland

The Golden State Warriors said Saturday the team wouldn't go to the White House — even if they had been invited — after President Donald Trump suggested in a tweet that star player Stephen Curry is not welcome.

"We believe there is nothing more American than our citizens having the right to express themselves freely on matters important to them," the team said in a statement. "We're disappointed that we did not have an opportunity during this process to share our views or have open dialogue on issues impacting our communities that we felt would be important to raise."

While its customary for professional sports teams that have won championships to get an audience with the president, Curry told reporters Friday that he would sit out on any potential trip.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/23/opinions/trump-nfl-remarks-racial-issue-zelizer-opinion/index.html

Many athletes have turned down invitations from other presidents without provoking a Trump-like response. In 2012, Tim Thomas of the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins, a tea party supporter, refused to visit the White House. Green Bay Packers' Mark Chmura didn't go to meet President Bill Clinton. And the Boston Celtics' Larry Bird turned down a meeting in 1984 with Ronald Reagan.

When Red Sox star Manny Ramirez refused to go to the White House to meet George W. Bush, the president joked, "I'm sorry [David Ortiz's] running mate, Manny Ramirez isn't here. I guess his grandmother died again. Just kidding. Tell Manny I didn't mean it." Other than some jokes, presidents have decided to stay focused on the bigger policy challenges at hand. Not Trump. He couldn't resist lashing out and further proved that he is a divisive president who continues to capitalize on social division to promote faux populism. The kind that promises relief to struggling Americans by expressing sympathy with their social anger -- by blaming the other -- rather than offering real economic relief.

This controversy comes right as President Trump makes one last-ditch attempt to push for what is likely to be legislation that would strip away the health care of millions of Americans and gets ready to push a regressive tax cut that would benefit the wealthy.

Some people say that the President simply speaks his mind and doesn't always think through everything that he says. But we have seen that when Trump wants to be seen as presidential, he can be very restrained about certain issues.

The fact that he has made a choice to take on this issue at this moment was a political choice and it is one that, unfortunately, resembles a series of statements and decisions that reveals how this is a president determined to divide and not unite our country.

Trump's supporters, who are cheering on his NFL remarks and his rescinded invitation, should ask themselves what campaign promises -- the ones that were made directly to them -- has the President dedicated his time to keeping.

And, when we are in a state of tremendous tension with North Korea and perhaps veering toward a war, they should be asking, why is the President spending his time on these issues?

Trump's criticism of NFL players' patriotism ring false from a guy who avoided the draft five times and pals around with Russian agents.

Sorry Kyle. Facts are facts and that one's a likely Photoshop job. No evidence of that ever happening sez factcheck.org

The facts, wherever they may lead.

Still doesn't change the FACT that Trump's an indesputable fascist/racist and is hellbent on dismantling every American institution charged with holding him accountable for his lies and crimes.

I have heard this said numerous times on TV today:

I would think the president would have enough to worry about with North Korea, health care, the Russia investigation, and hurricanes without worrying about who is kneeling at football games.

Fanastic!

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/president-trumps-insults-helped-unify-nfl-200558047.html

LONDON – Side by side, arm linked in arm, player-owner-player.

Marcedes Lewis. Shahid Khan. Telvin Smith.

It will serve as an iconic image on a day of unprecedented protest and unity in the NFL.

Donald Trump called the mothers of players who protest during the playing of the national anthem “bitches,” demanded said protesters be summarily fired and encouraged a boycott of the National Football League. The Jacksonville Jaguars, from ownership down to the last of the roster, responded by saying no, not here, not now, not in this sport.

It’s believed Khan became the first owner to ever join a player protest, sending a powerful picture of togetherness and support in a game played all the way over in England and beamed around the globe. Before their 44-7 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, at least 14 Jaguars took a knee during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” here. At least 10 Ravens did the same.

Other players of each team who didn’t feel comfortable using the anthem as a platform made sure they showed support for the teammates who did by standing as one.

“It was a privilege,” Khan said.

Trump is a master of wedge issues, and like any good politician he wields them when things aren’t going his way politically. His presidency is a recurring cable TV shout-fest, the insults and intensity ramped up and nothing getting solved in the end.

Whether a few players kneel for the anthem – most often as a way of speaking up for the voiceless who have been subject to police violence – has little to no tangible impact on fans. It doesn’t get anyone a raise, or make their kid’s school better or defuse nuclear threats.

Yet many Americans are upset at what they see as disrespect for the flag, for the military, for the nation’s history. They have that right. They wonder why it needs to occur during what is otherwise entertainment. It’s fair to ask that. You can be offended by whatever you want in America. Whether Trump shares their rage or is just exploiting it, there are many who have an honest disagreement about the protests.

That includes some of the Jaguars, who are at least conflicted. Smith said he didn’t kneel because the game was being played on foreign soil and it didn’t feel right to him. Lewis said he struggles with the issue because his stepfather is a veteran with a Purple Heart.

“You can pull from both sides,” Lewis said.

Trump is feeding red meat to his base while trying to further divide America. Yet Sunday he ran into unexpected and unprecedented solidarity in the NFL. Players and owners and coaches generally feud over everything – from rules to investigations, from revenue to safety.

They all agreed on Sunday.

It is amazing how many prominent Republican are speaking out against Trump. No wonder he is now trying to work with Democrats.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/trump-kneel-attack-gives-his-base-reason-stand-n804316

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is getting exactly what he wanted from a racially charged confrontation with professional athletes and sports team owners: A morale boost for his base and a fight with those who see the refusal to stand for the National Anthem as an appropriate form of dissent.

Trump’s fiery declaration on Friday night that National Football League owners should "fire or suspend" players who kneel during the anthem was met Saturday with fierce criticism and on Sunday with mass demonstrations of resistance on the field.

Some players knelt, while others locked arms in solidarity. Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh and Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan were among those who joined players in protests that are now nearly as much about Trump as the original desire, pushed into the spotlight more than a year ago by Colin Kaepernick, to highlight racial injustices in the criminal justice system.

"He wanted a reaction. He got that reaction," former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele told NBC News. "It’s very disappointing — the same level of stuff we get from the president that doesn’t advance a genuine conversation but polarizes people into camps…This is asinine."

But at a time when some of Trump’s staunchest allies are lining up against him in an Alabama Senate GOP runoff on Tuesday, his effort to dismantle Obamacare is hanging by a thread, and the president's been more likely to team up with Democratic leaders than Republicans on legislation, GOP strategists say Trump found an issue that reminds his supporters where he stands on cultural issues

Jacksonville Jaguars Shad Khan was conspicuously silent on Saturday following President Donald Trump’s comments about players who choose to kneel during the national anthem. It seemed he was waiting until Sunday to make his loudest statement yet.

Following Trump’s comments in which he claimed players should be fired for kneeling during the national anthem, Khan, who donated $1 million to Trump’s presidential campaign, declined to make a public statement of his own. Instead, he referred to a Jaguars spokesperson:

“Commissioner Goodell’s statement speaks for Mr. Khan and the Jaguars.”

Then, before Jacksonville’s London game on Sunday morning, one where a number of players from both sides chose to kneel, Khan linked arms with two of his players as a show of unity.

Poll: Who’s Backing NFL Protesters? The Answer May Surprise You
Newsweek Emily Ekins,Newsweek 5 hours ago

On Monday we released one question from the forthcoming national Cato 2017 Free Speech and Tolerance Survey of 2,300 Americans conducted by the Cato Institute in collaboration with YouGov.

The national survey finds that a solid majority, 61 percent, of Americans oppose firing NFL (National Football League) players who refuse to stand for the national anthem before football games in order to make a political statement.

These results stand in contrast to President Trump’s remarks over the weekend and his urging NFL teams to fire players who refuse to stand for the anthem.

A little more than a third (38 percent) of Americans align with Trump and support firing these players

Chuck Rosenberg, acting head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, will resign at the end of the month, multiple media outlets are reporting.

Rosenberg, a holdover from President Barack Obama’s administration, announced his plans on Tuesday, according to an email sent to DEA staff and obtained by The Washington Post and The New York Times. Anonymous law enforcement officials told the Times that Rosenberg had become “convinced that President Trump had little respect for the law.”

Trump Says NFL Ratings Are ‘Way Down’ Due To Protests. But The NFL Says They Are Up.

More people are watching top NFL games than ever watched “The Apprentice.”

By Ryan Grenoble

Not only are ratings for NFL games not “way down” as Trump claimed on Twitter early Tuesday, they’re actually up.

The weekend’s NFL ratings were 3 percent higher overall than for the same weekend last year, a league spokesman told HuffPost Tuesday. And ESPN’s Monday night game was up 63 percent, compared with the Monday game at this time last year.

It's About Racism, Not the Flag: Jackie Robinson Didn't Stand for the Anthem

By Heather Digby Parton, Salon | News Analysis

September 26, 2017

That's what those athletes who are taking a knee are saying today, 45 years later. No matter how rich and successful they become, they are still black men in white America, facing potentially mortal danger every time a police officer pulls them over. Whatever Donald Trump and his deeply racist core of supporters believe, black men in America still do not have it made.

Deciding not to stand for the national anthem was also an explicit and intensely personal protest for the man who courageously broke the color barrier in professional sports at great cost to his pride and dignity. I'm speaking of the military veteran and lifelong Republican named Jackie Robinson, whose 1972 autobiography ends this way:

"Today as I look back on that opening game of my first world series, I must tell you that it was Mr. [Branch] Rickey's drama and that I was only a principal actor. As I write this twenty years later, I cannot stand and sing the anthem, I cannot salute the flag; I know that I am a black man in a white world. In 1972, in 1947, at my birth in 1919, I know that I never had it made".

This is what most Trump supporters believe. Trump hints at it all the time but he can't say it. That is how he keeps them in line.

The graduation rate from all high schools should be 99%. And no school system measures up or even comes close. I guess this has many causes: broken homes, drugs, poverty, etc. I don't know what the answer to all this is. But it would sure help if we had a president who was a uniter and not a divider.

Some of them are outstanding. One was even president and is ranked the 12th best president ever! We need to treat everyone as an individual and not prejudge as a member of a group.

Want to talk TRUTH? Here are some Incontrovertible FACTS:

Why are students dropping out?

"One unchanging factor when it comes to the dropout rate is socioeconomic background. Since the National Center for Education Statistics first started tracking different groups of high school students in the late 1960s, the socioeconomic status of each pupil has impacted the graduation rate. Students from low-income families are 2.4 times more likely to drop out than middle-income kids, and over 10 times more likely than high-income peers to drop out"

As ranked by historians, not by gassy. Big difference.

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/02/all-time-best-president-united-states-rankings-235149

Historians have ranked Barack Obama the 12th best president of all time, the highest rated since President Ronald Reagan, in a new C-SPAN survey released Friday.

Less than a month after exiting the White House, Obama received high marks from presidential historians for his pursuit of "equal justice for all" and for his commanding "moral authority," ranking third and seventh among all former presidents in each respective category. The 44th president also cracked a top 10 ranking for his "economic management" and public persuasion.

A third of the people in West Virginia are on Medicaid. Their minority rate is very low.

Oh you implied that a vast majority of them are minorities. It is what Trump says that is called a dog whistle.

A nursing home in Waterloo has 103 patients. 100 of them are on Medicaid. They were certainly almost all middle class hard working folks in their working years. Now their savings are all gone and they are on Medicaid.

You unmistakably implied a correlation and are now doing it again. Don't pretend otherwise

I'm sure it is true! You're telling me it is not? When you have a graduation rate in cities like Rochester around 35% where do you think these people are headed? I'm supposed to feel sorry for these people when they can't even get an education! No wonder they live a life of crime, medicaid, drugs & no opportunities! They portray that as every bodies else's fault but their own!

No it partly their fault. Some overcome all of it and become very productive members of society. One even became president. But they just have to work harder at it than a white male. Even a white female is at a big disadvantage. Look at the last presidential race for example.

Trump said he would lock her up. He dropped that idea right after he was elected. Imagine that.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016...on-jail-dropped

November 22, 2016

Donald Trump has in effect dropped his threat to jail Hillary Clinton, a prospect that frequently roused supporters to chant “lock her up!” and led critics to compare him to leaders of authoritarian regimes.

The president-elect told the New York Times on Tuesday that it would be “divisive” to pursue criminal investigations into the former secretary of state over her use of a private email server or conflicts of interest involving her foundation. His conciliatory tone provoked a backlash from some conservatives.

“I don’t want to hurt the Clintons, I really don’t,” Trump said, according to a tweet by Times journalist Mike Grynbaum. “She went through a lot and suffered greatly in many different ways.”

Trump was then pressed on whether he had definitively ruled out a prosecution, Grynbaum reported. The president-elect replied: “It’s just not something that I feel very strongly about.”

We're saying you should learn the facts before you assail those who may not necessarily be to blame for their personal circumstances.

I'll repost this data revealing a myriad of reasons behind dropout rates in the US, since you obviously didn't read it when I posted it previously. If you DID, then you're simply disregarding the FACTS as they are, and your opinions on the subject would therefore be meaningless. Let's hope you're capable of understanding the nuances of context, shall we?

I'm asking gassy since HE was the one making the uneducated statements. Hopefully he has the courage to actually address the question with a legitimate reply. Besides, none of us has EVER stated that which you claim (whoever the hell 'Teddy' is). crazy

I can't remember the last time either of you engaged in a genuinely reasoned discussion. Your replies are almost always filled little more than baseless assertion, opinions, pejoratives or inane eruptions. Once in a awhile is one thing, but c'mon. Do you have nothing of value to debate?
