BOSTON (Reuters) - Thousands of people took to the streets of Boston on Saturday to protest hate speech a week after a woman was killed at a Virginia white-supremacist demonstration, and their shouts drowned out the "Free Speech" rally that sparked their march.

Organizers of the rally had invited several far-right speakers who were confined to a small pen that police set up in the historic Boston Common park to keep the two sides separate. The city largely avoided a repeat of last weekend's violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, where there were bloody street battles and one woman was killed.

The rally never numbered more than a few dozen people, and its speakers could not be heard over the shouts of those protesting it and due to the wide security cordon between the two sides.

Protesters surrounded people leaving the rally, shouting "shame" at them and occasionally throwing plastic water bottles. Police escorted several rally participants through the crowds, sometimes struggling against protesters who tried to stop them.

A Reuters photographer saw multiple marchers arrested.

Two male rally participants wearing Trump's red "Make America Great Again" campaign hats attempted to enter penned-in protest area. They were swarmed by black-clad protesters, some with their faces covered, as the crowd screamed "go home" and "no hate" at them.

"They heard our message loud and clear: Boston will not tolerate hate," said Owen Toney, a 58-year-old community activist who attended the anti-racism protest. "I think they'll think again about coming here."

A controversial Free Speech Rally in Boston fell apart Saturday afternoon when thousands of counter-protesters showed up and drowned it out. Journalists at the Boston Common, a downtown park, tweeted about an hour into the planned rally that many, if not all, of the attendees left the bandstand where they were due to hear speeches from several prominent conservative figures.

The Free Speech Rally organizers had permits to hold their event from noon to 2 p.m. local time on Saturday. But as of about 1:30 p.m., police on scene were dealing mostly with counter-protesters. The free speech group had left.

"I didn't realize how unplanned of an event it was going to be," speaker Samson Racioppi told WCVB. "I really think it was supposed to be a good event by the organizers, but it kinda fell apart."

An estimated 15,000 counter-protesters carrying signs, anti-Trump gear, water bottles and more marched toward the park Saturday morning to meet roughly 50 free speech activists gathered in the bandstand, according to the Boston Globe. The demonstrations were likely getting more attention than normal because of last weekend's incidents in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a group of white nationalists gathered to fight the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and kicked off a series of counter-protests that ultimately left three people dead.

In Portland, Oregon, hundreds took to the streets Friday night for an "Eclipse Hate" demonstration, which organizers said was intended to show solidarity with the people of Charlottesville, CNN affiliate KPTV reported. The event included a moment of silence for victims of hate.

BOSTON ― A week after a white supremacist at a rally in Virginia killed one person and injured more than a dozen others, thousands of counterprotesters in Boston turned out to oppose participants of a self-described “free speech” rally with a message of their own: White supremacy has no place in this country.

Crowds marched to gather at the historic Boston Common park, where the rally was being held, with swarms of people chanting “make racists afraid again” and “who defends the Nazis? Trump defends the Nazis!” The rally remained peaceful, and the number of counterprotesters dwarfed the dozens or so of those who came in support of the event, organized by members of the so-called “alt-right.”

President Donald Trump tweeted his support for the Boston Police Department's handling of a self-described free speech rally and counterprotest march that brought thousands to the city's downtown Saturday, adding that he applauded "the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate."

"Looks like many anti-police agitators in Boston," Trump tweeted about two hours after the largely peaceful rally and march there ended. "Police are looking tough and smart! Thank you."

Later, Trump tweeted that the protests might help heal decades-old divisions.

"Our great country has been divided for decades," he wrote. "Sometimes you need protest in order to heal, & we will heal, & be stronger than ever before!"

"I want to applaud the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate," he continued. "Our country will soon come together as one!"

National attention focused on Boston Saturday as protesters planned to fill the streets to pronounce their opposition to bigotry and racism a week after a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville.

Many were concerned that the protests in Boston would turn into riots, causing property damage and producing casualties — a repeat of events in Charlottesville that led to one death and numerous injuries. The fear was that the violence would come to Boston, a major city where tens of thousands of angry anti-racist demonstrators were expected in the streets.

But after the marches concluded — more than 40,000 attended — those concerns seemed outsized. Boston’s city government and police force had allowed for a poorly attended so-called “Free Speech Rally," which had ties to the white nationalist Virginia rally, as well as the counter-protests that far outnumbered the original event.

BOSTON -- Thousands of demonstrators chanting anti-Nazi slogans converged Saturday on downtown Boston, dwarfing a small group of conservatives who cut short a "free speech rally" in a boisterous repudiation of white nationalism, just a week after racially tinged bloodshed in Virginia.

Police confined a small group of "free speech" protesters to the Parkman Bandstand on historic Boston Common as they blocked off the massive counter-protests, CBS Boston reports. The permit issued for the rally came with severe restrictions, including a ban on backpacks, sticks and anything that could be used as a weapon.

Boston's police commissioner, William B. Evans, said an estimated 40,000 people attended the counter-protests and there was very little property damage.

One week after violent protests rattled Charlottesville, Virginia, a scheduled free speech rally in Boston Saturday was met with thousands of counterprotesters, but the day went off mostly smoothly, police said, with 33 arrests but few injuries.

A total of 33 arrests were made Saturday, mostly from disorderly conduct and a few assaults on police officers, the Boston Police Department announced. Police Commissioner William Evans said at a news conference this afternoon that some urine-filled bottles were thrown at officers, and police indicated on Twitter that some demonstrators were throwing rocks at police.

But for the most part, Evans said, the day of direct action went off smoothly as police planned, with very little injury and property damage.

"Overall I thought we got the First Amendment people in, we got them out, no one got hurt, no one got killed," he said.

Police did stop three people with ballistic vests and a gun, Evans said, "but we were lucky to get those three out of here and confiscate the vests."

Evans said roughly 40,000 people descended on Boston Saturday, "standing tall against hatred and bigotry in our city, and that's a good feeling." He added that he wished the "trouble makers stayed away," who he said weren't there for either the free speech side or the counterprotesters' side, but "were here just to cause problems."

Evans said that "99.9 percent of the people here were for the right reasons -- that's to fight bigotry and hate."

I linked to NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, Yahoo, and the LA Times. Who did you link to? Nobody. That says it all.

from Breitbart no less

President Donald Trump praised protesters in Boston on Saturday, after an estimated 40,000 people arrived in the city to challenge a planned free speech rally of about 300 right-leaning people.

“Our great country has been divided for decades. Sometimes you need protest in order to heal, & we will heal, & be stronger than ever before!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The protests were contentious but lacked the same level of violence demonstrated in Charlottesville after riot police dispersed the rally.

“I want to applaud the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate,” Trump wrote. “Our country will soon come together as one!

People should have a right to protest no matter what the message is freely!

Yes but when the message is this bad that 40,000 people protest the message it takes a small army to protect the fools. And they think Trump is supporting them making it much worse. Never before have we had such a fool for a president.

How Democrats Would Fix Obamacare

They’ve said if Republicans dropped their repeal demand, they’d be willing to help repair the law. Here are some of their ideas.

If the administration simply implemented the law as intended, they say, Congress could stand down. “There’s a very good chance that it’s sustainable if you just do those things,” said Representative John Yarmuth of Kentucky, the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee. Murray told me she “absolutely” believed the law could stand on its own if the Trump administration implemented it properly.
