Ithaca police investigating 'suspicious' death after body found at construction site

ITHACA, N.Y. — A body was found at a Collegetown construction site Tuesday morning. The death is being treated as suspicious and an investigation is underway, the Ithaca Police Department said.

At 6:58 a.m. Tuesday, the Ithaca Police Department and the Ithaca Fire Department responded to an apartment complex on 200 block of Dryden Road. IFD was called regarding report a dead body in the apartment complex. There was also evidence a fire incident had occurred inside the complex, Jamie Williamson, public information officer for the Ithaca Police Department, said.

Officers who arrived on scene found a deceased man.

"The death does appear to be suspicious in nature," Williamson said.

At this time, the IPD is not saying whether the fire and death are related.

Three homeland security vehicles are at the scene, along with a K-9 unit, Ithaca police, New York State Police, Bangs Ambulance and the Ithaca Fire Department. The Tompkins County Sheriff's Office and the Cornell University Police Department are also assisting in the investigation.

At about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Bangs Ambulance personnel were seen taking out a body on a stretcher from the Breazzano Center building under construction at 209-215 Dryden Ave. The Breazzano Family Center for Business Education will house Cornell's Executive MBA program when completed.

HRC Mourns Kendra Adams, Trans Woman Murdered in Ithaca, NY

The murder continues a disturbing pattern of violence against transgender people of color, particularly women. In 2017 to date, every one of the 13 known transgender U.S. murder victims has been a person of color, including 11 Black victims and an Oglala Lakota woman. In November, HRC and the Trans People of Color Coalition published A Matter of Life and Death, a report highlighting how racism, misogyny and transphobia put trans women of color at shocking and unacceptable risk for violence.

Adams is at least the third transgender person killed in New York state since 2013. In August of 2013, Islan Nettles was attacked on a New York City street by a group of men shouting anti-LGBTQ slurs; one of the attackers was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Earlier this year, a transgender person died after being attacked in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood. Ithaca, where Adams was killed, is a small city known for its progressive atmosphere and located about four hours northwest of New York City. Together, the murders make clear that the epidemic of anti-transgender violence affects communities considered LGBTQ-friendly as well as those where bias and hate are widespread.

HRC extends sincere condolences to Ms. Adams’ family, friends and community.

Collegetown murder will not be tried as a hate crime: The crime itself – which Berrios, a transgender woman of color, was a victim of – will not be tried as a hate crime. District Attorney Matthew Van Houten explained that there was no evidence which would have supported the classification of the charged offenses as hate crimes under New York State law.
