Man sleeping in car turned over to IPD for burglary charge

A Syracuse man found unconscious in his car has been turned over to the Ithaca Police Department for an outstanding felony warrant.

A New York State Police trooper was sent by Tompkins County 911 to check the welfare of a vehicle stopped on Sheffield Road in the town of Ithaca at about 4:35 p.m. on Thursday and found Giles O. Gerhart, 33, of Syracuse, asleep in the driver seat of the vehicle. An investigation determined he was driving while impaired by drugs.

Gerhart was charged with the misdemeanor of Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. A further check found Gerhart had an arrest warrant for second-degree burglary in the city of Ithaca. He was issued tickets returnable to the town of Ithaca Court on April 6 and was then turned over to the IPD for the outstanding felony warrant.
