Area dog breeding sites cited in Humane Society report

Five of the six dog breeding facilities in New York that made the Humane Society of the United States' "A Horrible Hundred" list are in the Finger Lakes region.

The report, issued last week for the Humane Society's seventh-annual Puppy Mill Action Week, cites four dog-breeding facilities in Yates County — three in Dundee and one in Penn Yan — along with a facility in Waterloo, Seneca County. A sixth facility on the list is in Troupsburg, Steuben County.

The report lists 100 breeding facilities from 20 states based on conditions documented in publicly available inspection reports and on evidence obtained during Humane Society research and investigations, the Humane Society said

New York has the fifth-highest number of breeding facilities nationwide according to the report, which highlights violations and citations involving issues such as unsanitary tools used to cut off puppies' tails, hundreds of wounded and emaciated dogs, and dogs with raw and bloody wounds kept in unsanitary conditions.

Area breeding facilities on Humane Society list
  • Clara and Dan Byler/Byler's Kennel, Troupsburg, Steuben County: Dogs found in the cold without food/ water
Rebecca Graber, Waterloo, Seneca County: Dogs with "raw and bloody" wounds
Raymond Hoover/Double R Kennel, Dundee, Yates County: Cutting off puppies' tails
Alvin Shirk/A & L Kennels– Dundee, Yates County: Emaciated and wounded dogs
Aaron Zimmerman, Dundee, Yates County: Urine fumes so strong they hurt inspectors' eyes
Nathan Zimmerman, Penn Yan, Yates County: Repeatedly keeping puppies on dangerous wire floors

The article is from 2013 and reflects old information.

The 2016 Report, issued in May 2016, only lists two NY breeders:

New York

Jolene Martin, Seneca Falls, N.Y.
Matted dogs, injured dog, and dogs with feces in their food bowls; USDA noted “not enough employees” to care for several hundred dogs.

Nathan Zimmerman, Penn Yan, N.Y. (repeat offender)
Boston terrier kept on wire flooring had pressure sores; Maltese was “very thin;” Yorkie was soiled with feces.

Not saying that these places should be allowed to operate, just saying that the information should be timely. Here are the links to the most recent report and the 2016 list of breeders.
