Citizen Police Academy Begins at Steuben Co. Sheriff's Office

About a dozen residents throughout the county are participating in the 10 week program. It gives an inside look at the operations of law enforcement, including investigations, search and seizure, and use of police force.

Sheriff James Allard believes the program helps build an understanding between the police and community members.

"My hope is that they're talking to their friends and their neighbors and co-workers and saying 'Hey , this is what I learned last night at the Citizens Academy, and this is why the police do this, and why they do that' - so that then will exponentially will spread throughout the county. And, again, our goal is to always have a partnership with the residents here in Steuben County," Allard explains.

Participants will also get a chance to learn some scenario training. Pre-registration is required. Due to the practical application portions of the class, an application is needed for background purposes.
