American Chemistry Council Attacks Independent Science Conducted by International Agency

(Beyond Pesticides, January 30, 2016) The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the World Health Organization’s (WHO) cancer research branch, is again under attack. The most recent assault comes from the American Chemistry Council (ACC), which represents major U.S. chemical companies such as Bayer, Dow, Dupont and Monsanto and is calling on WHO to rein in IARC, claiming the agency of “dubious and misleading work” when classifying potential carcinogens. According to the ACC’s website, the Council launched the Campaign for Accuracy in Public Health Research this past Wednesday and it is unclear what steps it will take try to undercut the agency. The ACC is specifically criticizing IARC’s monograph program, claiming that the program “suffers from persistent scientific and process deficiencies.”

Local Governments Can Prohibit GE Crops, Says U.S. Court of Appeals

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued its decisions Friday on whether federal and Hawai'i state laws preempt Hawai'i counties' authority to regulate genetically engineered (GE) crops and pesticide use. Of significance to state and local communities throughout the U.S., the Ninth Circuit ruled that federal law—specifically, the Plant Protection Act—does not prohibit states and counties from passing local laws to regulate and ban commercially-grown GE crops.

European Nations Reject GM Crop Cultivation in Groundbreaking Votes

“With Europe’s nations divided, the Commission must protect our right to grow and eat GM Free by sending these crops packing. GM Bt maize is designed to kill pests but its impact on beneficial insects like butterflies is poorly understood. National bans are supposed to give countries control over their farms but no measures have been put in place to protect those who have used the “opt-out” mechanism (including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) from contamination. Maize pollen travels kilometers and is no more likely to respect a national border than to turn left at a roundabout so keeping GM out of your own back yard is never going to be enough.

Monsanto, EPA Seek to Keep Talks Secret on Glyphosate Cancer Review

"Since Monsanto's communications with the EPA remain secret, these known lobbying efforts are only the tip of the iceberg of Monsanto's collusion with the EPA. Monsanto's bad acts in violating U.S. regulations through secret communications with the EPA should not by rewarded by allowing them to keep these communications secret by merely stamping them 'Confidential,'" the plaintiffs' attorney state in the filings. "These documents summarize communications with EPA which are not elsewhere memorialized; they are not trade secrets and the public has a compelling interest in disclosure."

Seneff: “Europe is not nearly so enamored of GM crops as the U.S. is. These new GM crops have insecticide built in and are resistant to the herbicide glufosinate - a non-coding amino acid analogue of glutamate, which works in a way that is similar to glyphosate, a non-coding amino acid analogue of glycine. Fortunately for Europe, they rejected these new GM crops, at least for now.”

EU: no member state licensing for the three GMO cultures

Seventeen member states (Bulgaria, Germany, Cyprus, Latvia, Greece, Croatia, France, Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Italy, Slovenia, Malta, Luxembourg and Denmark) have thus decided to refuse GMO culture. Equally so have four regions, being Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Wallonia.

Currently, the MON 810, made by the major player Monsanto, is the only authorised GMO in the EU. The licence holder since 1998, MON 810 is grown in Spain, Portugal and, to a lesser extent, in the Czech Republic.

Since then, all attempts to introduce other GMOs cultures have failed, faced with opposition from member states. The situation is different concerning the importing and marketing of GMOs.

Two of the subjects discussed were Glyphosate (RoundUp) and Dicamba. Both of these products are widely used in this country and are presenting a huge health threat to many.

Public Interest Groups, Farmers File Lawsuit Challenging Monsanto's Toxic Pesticides

“Federal regulators have abandoned the interests of farmers, the environment and public health,” said George Kimbrell, of the Center for Food Safety and counsel in the case. “We won’t allow our food to be dragged backward into a pesticide-soaked nightmare — not without a hell of a fight.”

Dicamba is linked to increased rates of cancer in farmers as well as birth defects, while glyphosate was recently classified as a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organization. Farmers are extremely alarmed by dicamba’s propensity to drift and damage neighboring crops, while conservationists are concerned about its impacts on biodiversity. Dicamba drift threatens plants that provide nectar for pollinators and habitat for animals, and is frequently detected in surface waters.

Seneff: “This is an excellent article by James Lyons Weiler on why "science" can no longer be trusted to be valid.”

Fake Science: When is Medical “Science” Not Science?

WE HAVE BEEN WARNED by our government and by specific social media outlets that much of the “news” we read online falls into a category of “Fake News”. This warning has been identified as a very real threat to the freedom of expression and a move toward censorship. I have witnessed first-hand how facts have been obliterated by government officials at press conferences, in testimony fake-news to Congress, and in conference calls to the scientific community.

Throughout my scientific career, I have championed objectivity, first-hand, with hands-on data, data analysis plans, study designs, reporting, writing papers, publishing, participating on NIH grant review panels, conducting peer review on studies submitted to dozens of different journals. I served as founding Editor-in-Chief on a journal that was my brain child, and led a dozen or so of the Editorial Board in a threat of mass resignation against the publisher if they weakened the peer-review system I had established. (I learned later that the idea came from a sick, jealous colleague of mine, who wished to weaken the journal). To the publisher’s credit, he saw wisdom in keeping a blind peer-review process, and both the journal, and the online, open-access publisher, are thriving.

The appearance of news foretelling future censorship of so-called “Fake News” on social media is chilling. But it raises an interesting question: what about Fake Science? If the corporate masters wish to dictate what “news” we know, will our benevolent information screeners allow Science to proceed unabated? What would Fake Science look like? And how would we know?

Having been trained every year for 16 years on the standards for regulatory compliance of proper conduct of science, and having taught courses on research study designs and research ethics, I have a fairly granular view on Fake Science. To understand what Fake Science would look like, we could start with funding agendas.

Every year, the Federal Budget is constructed in a manner that is supposed to provide funding (immense amounts of funding) to agencies that conduct research, and that fund extramural research studies at Universities, Medical Research Centers, and the like. This funding often comes in the form of earmarks to fund research on specific public health concerns, such as cancer. However, the Senate does not like to be involved in deciding the specific types of studies, nor the focus of the studies, to be conducted. They have repeatedly stated that they would prefer to leave it up to “the Scientists”. In reality, however, it is often left up to the agenda of the agencies, rather than the full population of scientists who might apply. Much of it is never made available to extramural, independent researchers – and the process of securing funding for research within (intramural) research areas is ridiculously simple, and often lack rigor. Thus, science designed “to demonstrate” on point or “to disprove” another is inherently biased, and tends to fulfill policy, not scientific needs. Let’s look at the various levels of control by which public policy is infused into, or in some cases, obliterates, bona fide science and replaces it with Fake Science.

Bias #1. Piracy: Regulatory Capture of Agencies

When corporations send people to secure high-ranking positions within agencies, the process is called “Regulatory Capture”. When this occurs, it can alter the science that gets conducted in three important ways. The first is in the determination of what area(s) get prioritized in the large but finite budget. The second is the in the determination of the types of studies (randomized clinical trials, retrospective studies, animal studies, translational studies) that are given priority. If essential areas of research are not funded, then specific, important questions (Do cigarettes cause cancer? Is ADHD overdiagnosed? Do pesticides cause cancer in humans?) are never asked. And if earmarked dollars specify an area of research, the captured agency can still manipulate the types of questions that can be asked, either directly, or by restricting the type(s) of studies for which the funding will be allowed to be used. If the questions are particularly gnarly, with big consequences for corporations, they might even dispense with extramural funding altogether, and instead conduct all of the research in-house, where it can be more easily managed and controlled.

Bias #2. The Block: Non-Objective Peer Review (Grant Application Stage)

Let’s say some plug of funding escapes an agency, and makes it way into an independent researcher’s budget. They are funded after a process of peer-review, managed by the funding agency, many times in response to specific calls for proposals, or program announcements. Sometimes a cabal of scientists will work to review each other’s grants, and turf competitors’ grant applications with harsh reviews. The NIH has a process in which a huge percentage of the grant applications are “triaged” – returned without further review – because a superficial review found them not worthy of being carried forward. This is ostensibly a time-saving step; however, it can readily be used to send back grant applications that ask the “wrong” questions. I have witnessed this first hand while serving on an NIH review panel. One particularly aggressive reviewer claimed (without evidence) that their competitor must have “made up” the data in their grant proposal. Naturally, I asked them if they had any independent evidence other than their level of disbelief in the outcome of the study. He had none.

The Philosopher Karl Popper, father of falsificationism, taught us that the degree to which we are surprised by the outcome of an honest critical test of a hypothesis is correlated to karl-popper-open-society the degree to which the hypothesis has been corroborated by surviving the test. One should not use background knowledge to dispense with the corroboration afforded a hypothesis, it’s the other way around: our background knowledge may in fact need to be updated when the outcome of the test does not falsify the hypotheses, and our degree of surprise should point us to look closely at our background and our collective knowledge.

Bias #3. The Check: Non-Objective Peer Review (Submitted Manuscript Stage)

Scientific journals should pride themselves on being objective sources of knowledge. To have a study published in a scientific journal (usually) means that it has survived a rigorous process of peer-review, by people who have (by design) no known conflicts of interest that would work in favor of, or against, acceptance or rejection of a particular study they have been invited to review. This process should never be influenced by nor controlled by the authors of the manuscript (although journals often ask study authors for 2-3 names of potential reviewers, there is no guarantee that those suggested will be utilized).

That said, studies can be harshly critiqued by competitors, or, worse, entire journals can be, like agencies, wholly owned subsidiaries of corporations. They can be overtly captured, say via movement of people into Editors-in-Chief positions, or they can become owned more subtly, for example, via research program funding of the Editors-in-Chief by corporations, or by advertisement funds directly to the Journal.

Bias #4. Mob Censorship/Study Assassination: Retraction of Published Studies Unfavorable to Corporate Agenda

Lately, a very disturbing trend has emerged in which studies that have found risk associated with corporate-owned medical products have been set upon by ostensibly well-intentioned denizens of the internet – the bloggist, or people with email who issue an “expression of concern”. With identities sometimes obscured, and pandering their presumed monopoly on scientific virtue with referential terms in their avatar or names, or their blog’s title (usually with terms referencing skepticism, reason, rationality… or some combination thereof), these individual set upon a peer-reviewed, published study with a frenzy and with a fine-tooth comb specifically seeking any minor flaw, or potential flaw in the study design, its implementation, or the author’s interpretation. Invariably, something is found – it is unlikely that any published study given a complete vivisection could ever be found that was completely flawless – and they amplify the significance of the flaw first in terms of its impact on the study conclusion. This is followed by a scorched-earth tactic in which they claim that if this study, which had been published previously, is allowed to exist unscathed, it will bring about fire and brimstone of plague and pestilence on the earth never seen before.

Nowhere in their communications do they reference the Journal’s stated policies for retraction. Authors of studies enduring such attack should reference the Journal’s stated policies for grounds for retraction when mounting their defense (if given the opportunity to do so).

This tactic has become so ridiculous that a study that was scheduled to be published after a first course of peer review was recently turfed by one journal due to few strongly-worded tweets encouraging scientists to take their papers to other journals unless a specific paper a Tweeter happened to not like is not retracted. If Science is to survive in the new Corporatocracy, this practice must be met with strongly worded letters to the deciding Editor by the Editorial Board with threats of mass resignation and counter-boycott, if necessary. An Editorial Board must stand by the Journal’s peer-review process, and the Journal must stand by the outcome of that process. To do otherwise is to allow Corporations to sanitize the literature of what they deem to be “problematic” studies, one study at a time.

As an exercise in serving them their own medicine, I and co-authors recently found seven fatal flaws in a study by Zerbo et al. that originally found association of autism with vaccines given the first trimester, until they lost the association via statistical shamwizardry (a term I coined in “Cures vs. Profits”).

Bias #5. Flawed Meta-analyses, Inflated Presumption of Statistical Power

Once the scientific literature has been sanitized of any studies that could show harm for a corporation’s product, someone is funded (usually by the corporation with financial interest) to conduct a special type of study called a meta-analysis. In a meta-analysis, a supposedly unbiased sample of available studies are pulled together, and their statistical analyses and results condensed into one, large conclusion. Well, if the previous four biases were not enough to sanitize the literature, there is always obfuscation by combining studies of different types, or rejection of studies with significant effects for having too small sample sizes – even though the positive result already demonstrated sufficient power at the sample size at which the study was conducted. The meta-analysis then finds no overall significant negative effect, and is cited as being “the largest study to date”, based on “over a million patients”, both of which are non-sequitur descriptors of meta-analyses, and are therefore patently untrue. One hundred poorly designed, under-powered studies that found no significant negative effect will result in one large meta-analysis that conclude no significant effect – so the citation of hundreds of thousands of patients involved in a meta-analysis does not imply increased power.

Bias #6. Flawed Medical Education and Kick-Backs

Medical education programs that are based on an intrinsically biased scientific literature are harmful to medicine, because they fail to transmit the full body of knowledge that exists on, say, risks of harms, serious adverse events, etc. to practitioners of medicine. Well before receipt of their degree, medical professionals are bombarded with messages of the utility and efficacy of certain drugs and medical procedures – and they learn that even though it is illegal for individual medical doctors to receive kickbacks to incentivize specific medical options, their practices can be given significant kick-backs (monetary incentives) or selecting the medical options being promoted by very wealthy corporations.

There are ethical individuals, such as the 80% of opthamologists who refuse to use Avastin to treat patients when Lucentis is clearly a clinically equivalent drug (see See Andrew Lam’s 2015 Commentary in the Chicago Tribune: Why do doctors choose a $2,000 cure when a $50 one is just as good?).

Those with clear vision will see, as I point out in “Cures vs. Profits”, that the profit motive thereby has a dramatically homogenizing effect on medicine – all for one, not one for any. This homogenization effect restricts the freedom of choice to the health care consumer, whose options are preselected by what the law has referred to as “learned intermediaries” led by industry cheerleaders called “Key Opinion Leaders” who spin the positive and further minimize the negative consequences of a drug or medical procedure they are peddling. [See See Carl Elliott’s “The Secret Lives of Big Pharma’s ‘Thought Leaders”, Chronicle of Higher Education, 2010].

Bias #7. Failure of Duty to Warn, Neglect of Rights to Informed Consent

Seven minutes, per patient, $400 per fully vaccinated child. Those two numbers should stick in your head. Pharmaceutical companies incentivize doctor’s practices with $400 per fully vaccinated pediatric patient – and yet the goal for an entire well-child visit is seven minutes. Health care providers shame parents who ask questions about vaccine risk by putting down “those crazy anti-vaxxers”. Each and every time a health provider fails to give a patient, or their parent, a vaccine information sheet, that patient/parent pair is being denied the right to informed consent. The pressure to restrict each well-child visit to seven minutes is to ensure as many patients are seen as possible, increasing the practice’s profit. In 2016, the AAP encouraged its members to refuse medical care to children whose parents ask too many questions – the threat of which by any definition is “coercion”.

Informed consent laws and rights exist, are enforceable, and the very point of consent procedures is to limit deception and coercion and exploitation. Our modern culture of respect for informed consent derives in part from the cruelty of Nazi experiments, which led to the Nuremberg Code of research ethics, which stipulated, “The voluntary consent of the human subject is absolutely essential”. Vaccines, of course, are on ongoing clinical trial, the safety of which is assessed via post-market surveillance.

Which explains why the 21st Century Cures Act has made is possible for those conducting medical experiments to enroll any American citizen in a clinical trial – without their consent – as long as those conducting the trial can convince their IRB the risk is minimal. According to the interpretive summary,

“(Sec. 2263) Clinical testing of medical devices or drugs no longer requires the informed consent of the subjects if the testing poses no more than minimal risk and includes safeguards.”

Rational analysis of the change in the wording points to an attempt at a CYA over retrospective vaccine safety studies. It seems unlikely that the 21st Century Cures obliteration of informed consent will ever be invoked. Clearly, the clause in the 21st Century Cures Act cannot apply to any American because the risk to those enrolled in clinical trials cannot be known until the conclusion of the trial. There remains a very large body of regulation and rules that exists that guarantees informed consent.

Vaccine information sheets exists because parents do not always even know which questions to ask. If you are a parent of a vaccinated child, and you were not handed a physical copy of the Vaccine Information Sheets from the CDC for each and every vaccine administered to your child, you have been denied your right to informed consent under the law. You may find that your doctor cannot or will not answer straightforward questions about vaccine safety, such as those provided to parents by The Institute for Pure and Applied Knowledge (see IPAK Informed Consent Flyer).

Bias #8. News Media Blackout

Those following the story of Ebola will recall how, after daily stories of the drama unfolding that could kill the world, the news media suddenly stopped reporting on Ebola. This was the direct result of the White House asking the Associated Press to stop reporting on suspected cases returning from countries in which Ebola was circulating in their populations. You will also notice that I managed to find 2,000 studies in Pubmed to read that show the specific mechanisms that cause vaccines to induce encephalopathy-mediated autism in some people, yet the press is extremely reluctant to cover new studies that support the link between vaccines and autism. It took Robert De Niro’s pulling of the movie “VAXXED” from the Tribeca Film Festival to get the media to pay attention to a film produced by Del Bigtree, the former producer of the television show “The Doctors”. This, in spite of the appearance of two celebrity medical doctors who changed their views on the autism/vaccine issue upon being shown the evidence that Dr. William Thompson provided to Dr. Brian Hooker showing that CDC sanitized the results of a key report that was to made to the Institutes of Medicine during their consideration of the available science on vaccines and autism.

Of course, news media outlets are more than happy to carry forward the party line about a drug or medical procedure as long as the Direct-to-Consumer advertising fees keep streaming in from Pharma. When confronted with ANY new study showing any connection between vaccines and autism, they don their cloak, and beat themselves about the head with wooden planks with their Gregorian Chant:

Watch VAXXED and let Dr. Wakefield tell you himself what he concluded in his study, which was retracted after a reporter – not a scientist – alleged impropriety in study design approval. Which, by the way, is precisely one of the complaints of the CDC Whistleblower about the CDC studies conducted to disprove Wakefield’s hypothesis.

Bias #9. Government Agency Censorship of Informed American Citizens

By law, the CDC must collect public comments during a period of time before issuing new rulings on changes to Vaccine Information Sheets. Having read the Vaccine Information Sheets for accuracy and completeness for another project, I was aware of the deficiencies 3in the MMR and MMR-V sheets. I was therefore astonished to read comments from certain well-known anti-vaccine risk awareness individuals that called, specifically, for a weakening for the MMR and MMR-V information sheets. An associate of mine and I prepared a joint comment, and a rebuttal to the dangerous call for less information on risk in the vaccine information sheets, and we waited.

After some 300 comments had appeared, our own, and another associate’s comment had not appeared. Finally, on December 23, 2016, our comment and rebuttal appeared, but altered. Key sections of both our comment, and of our rebuttal to the individuals calling for weakened information on risk had been redacted. The content of these comments are the subject of pending litigation.

Fake science would involve biased science funding agendas, regulatory capture of agencies, conflicts of interest, willful ignorance of risk, failure of duty to warn, profit pressures, media blackouts, and government censorship of private citizens. And that’s just in 2016.

Now you know why you think you know that vaccines do not cause autism.

And if you genuinely persist in your “knowledge”, in spite of this evidence of bias, I’ll point out the clearest evidence that exists that you do not know what you’re talking about. If you persist in your position that “Vaccines Do Not Cause Autism”, I say to you: How do you know? In spite of what you think you know, not all vaccines have been studied for a link to autism, and some studies do, in fact, exist that have found association.

See the table at end of the article.

Environmental Toxicants and Infant Mortality in the USA - 2016

David Kennedy, Stephanie Seneff, Robert M Davidson, John W Oller Jr, Boyd E Haley, and Roger D

Abstract: Despite enjoying a high standard of living, the United States ranks 46th among nations reporting
infant survival rates to the World Health Organization. Among factors that increase infant mortality are
environmental toxicants. Toxic metals such as mercury, aluminum, and lead interact synergistically
with fluoride compounds to produce metal fluoride complexes (e.g., AlF3 and AlF4−). Such toxicants act
as biophosphate mimetics disrupting biological signaling processes governing development, immune
defenses, and ordinary maintenance systems. Sources for the metals include mother’s mercury
amalgams, mercury and aluminum in injected medicines, and lead contaminated drinking water. All
of them are made even more toxic by fluorides as evidenced recently by water contamination in Flint,
Michigan. Fluorides interact with other toxins increasing their harmful impact. Among the interactants
are glyphosate and phosphate containing fertilizers that end up in the food and water because of
their widespread use in agriculture. The negative synergy for neonates in the U.S. is increased by
the hepatitis B injection containing both mercury and aluminum, and infant formula contaminated with
aluminum and the glyphosate in genetically modified soy milk reconstituted with water containing
fluoride, aluminum, lead, and other toxic substances. The harmful interactions of such chemicals are
associated with rising infant mortality in the U.S. We propose, therefore, a modest but urgent policy
change: under TSCA §5, silicofluoride addition to public water supplies should be suspended.

The following article by Dr. Ramon Seidler, PhD. is the article on the dangers of Roundup that we should re-post, download, and share with anyone who still supports the use of this dangerous herbicide or the GMO plants that are engineered to be sprayed with it. It also exposes how the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has bent over backwards to ignore proven dangers that are now ravaging the health of our population. The author should know. He is Ramon Seidler, PhD., the former Team Leader of the EPA’s Genetically Engineered Organism biosafety program. He consistently warned the agency about very real risks of GMOs, but was ignored by decision makers.

Herbicide Use Contributes to Declines in Monarch Populations

(Beyond Pesticides, February 13, 2017) A study by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and others attributes the reduced number of overwintering monarch butterflies –a reduction of 27% from last year—to herbicide use and other factors. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF), in conjunction with U.S. and Mexican environmental groups, has been leading the effort in tracking monarch butterflies. Their recently released 2016-2017 study concluded that the population of monarch butterflies decreased 27 percent from last year’s population, which had marked an increase from dangerously low levels over the previous three years. Overall, this marks an 80 percent decline in monarch population from the 1990’s. Researchers have estimated that within 20 years the monarch butterfly migration could collapse altogether.

New Risks of GMO Food, Glyphosate Uncovered: Scientist’s Ground-Breaking Research

Within just a few weeks, two studies were published in the peer-reviewed journal Scientific Reports that cast new doubts on the safety of genetically modified foods and glyphosate herbicide. The first found that a genetically modified corn, NK 603, was not substantially equivalent to a non-GMO counterpart, which is contrary to claims of GMO proponents. The second study found that glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, can cause a serious liver disease at doses thousands of times lower than that allowed by law.

Dr. Michael Antoniou, Head of the Gene Expression and Therapy Group at King’s College London in the United Kingdom, led the ground-breaking research.

The main focus of research within Dr. Antoniou’s group is the study of the molecular mechanisms of the regulation of gene function. He has used these discoveries to develop efficient gene expression systems for efficacious and safe biotechnological applications, including gene therapy.

More recently, Dr. Antoniou has expanded his research program to include using molecular profiling “omics” methods in evaluating the safety of foods derived from GMO crops, low dose exposure from their associated pesticides, and other chemical pollutants.

Dr. Antoniou is also a co-author of GMO Myths and Truths, an evidence-based examination of the claims made for the safety of genetically modified crops and foods.

I recently interviewed Dr. Antoniou about his newly published studies.

Please summarize the findings of your study showing that the GMO corn NK 603 was not substantially equivalent to a non-GMO corn.

Dr. Michael Antoniou: We used a modern in-depth compositional analysis to test the claim that a genetically engineered corn variety, NK603, was substantially equivalent to an isogenic non-GMO counterpart.

The establishment of substantial equivalence is a foundation for safety evaluation of GMO crops. In the United States and in other countries, the crops that have been commercialized are claimed to be substantially equivalent to non-GMO equivalents, and therefore safe.

But the kind of compositional analyses done thus far to see if a GMO crop is substantially equivalent is a crude nutritional analysis of total protein, fats, and vitamins.

If you use cutting-edge molecular profiling methods as we did, they will provide a spectrum of different types of proteins and small molecule metabolites. It’s a very in-depth analysis.

Does the claim of substantial equivalence stand up to this fine compositional analysis? No, it doesn’t. Our analysis found over 150 different proteins whose levels were different between the GMO NK603 and its non-GMO counterpart. More than 50 small molecule metabolites were also significantly different in their amounts.

What do these differences indicate?

Dr. Antoniou: They indicate that there were changes in the protein profile that were reflective of an imbalance in energy metabolism and oxidative stress. In terms of metabolite changes, the most pronounced were increased levels of two polyamines. These polyamines, putrescine and especially cadaverine, can be toxic in certain contexts when consumed in large amounts.

The bottom line of the paper is that once you do a compositional analysis properly, the GMO corn doesn’t stand up to claims of substantial equivalence. This questions the validity of a key step in the GM corn’s approval process.

A more detailed safety evaluation should have been conducted for this corn.

What about the criticisms from supporters of GMO crops?

Dr. Antoniou: There have been vociferous attacks, and we have dealt with them in a rational, evidence-based way. We have posted four extensive rebuttals.

For example, critics said we had to compare the GMO corn with many other non-GMO varieties to see the range of “natural variation.” But comparing with more varieties has the effect of hiding the differences—the exact opposite of what we were trying to do.

Our aim was to analyze to see any effect of the GM transformation process, so the only scientifically valid comparator is the nearest possible isogenic non-GMO counterpart. When you do that, you find differences.

Tell me about the Roundup/glyphosate study.

Dr. Antoniou: For the very first time we have established a causative link between an environmentally relevant level of daily ingestion of Roundup and a serious disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

We used cutting edge compositional analytical methods to determine the health status of rats’ livers. Protein and metabolite profiles are a direct measure of the composition of organs and give a direct readout of the health or disease status of organs. We found that these organs weren’t healthy. There were clear hallmarks of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which correlated with previous observations of an increased incidence of tissue necrosis or liver tissue replaced with scars.

We were able to make a direct statement that Roundup caused disease.

Roundup is a hitherto unknown and unsuspected potential risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease that calls for further investigation. Twenty-five percent of the U.S. population suffers from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Risk factors include obesity, diabetes, and high blood fat levels. But there are risk factors for the disease that have not yet been identified, and it’s possible that exposure to Roundup could be one such missing risk factor.

What are key takeaways of the study?

Dr. Antoniou: First, the rats consumed a glyphosate-equivalent level of Roundup that is 75,000 times lower than what is permitted in Europe and 437,500 times lower than that allowed in the U.S. Our study results suggest that the permitted safety intake level of glyphosate-based herbicides needs to be revisited as they may have been set way too high.

The second point that this is a new risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and needs to be taken into account by the medical establishment.

What are your thoughts about genetic engineering of foods?

Dr. Antoniou: I’ve maintained all along that when you take a look at the GMO transformation process—whether inserting genes or using newer methods, such as gene editing—and place these methods in the context of new genetics, which tells us that no gene or its protein product works in isolation, then you can expect problems from these genetic engineering procedures. Genes and their protein products work together in a highly complex, interactive, and integrated network. From the holistic perspective of gene organization, control, and function, the GMO transformation process is technically and conceptually flawed. It’s inevitable that there will be problems; it’s just a matter of degree. This is what basic science tells us.

And when GMOs are added to their associated pesticide residues, as a package, they become a potentially very harmful product.

Technologies like genetic engineering in agriculture must be re-evaluated for safety as the science shifts. If, as we do this, we find that it is not a predictable and safe technology, we need to have the courage to say “no” and look at different ways to achieve our goals because what we are doing is clearly disruptive.

New York State…

Mass Releases of Genetically Modified Insects in Area-Wide Pest Control Programs and Their Impact on Organic Farmers

GM diamondback moths are being released in an experiment in New York State. This recently published article in the peer-reviewed journal, Sustainability, examines potential effects on nearby organic farmers. Note: Throughout this article the word “contamination” will be used to denote the presence of GM insect adults, larvae, or body parts in agricultural products offered for sale.

The articles in this 'GMO Issues' section of the Say No To GMOs! site were originally posted many years ago but they still provide some of the most relevant and germinal analysis available. It is a bit disheartening that this information has been known for so long and yet nothing has changed in the regulation or promotion of this potentially devastating technology. Read here and weep.

Richard Strohman, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, University of California at Berkeley - 2000

"We're in a crisis position where we know the weakness of the genetic concept, but we don't know how to incorporate it into a new, more complete understanding. Monsanto knows this. DuPont knows this. Novartis knows this. They all know what I know. But they don't want to look at it because it's too complicated and it's going to cost too much to figure out. The number of questions, the number of possibilities for what happens to a cell, to the whole organism when you insert a foreign gene, are almost incalculable. And the time it would take to assess the infinite possibilities that arise is beyond the capabilities of computers. But that's what you get when you're dealing with living systems."

Declaration of Dr. Richard Lacey, M.D., Ph.D., United States District Court for the District of Columbia - 1998

“It is my considered judgment that employing the process of recombinant DNA technology (genetic engineering) in producing new plant varieties entails a set of risks to the health of the consumer that are not ordinarily presented by traditional breeding techniques. It is also my considered judgment that food products derived from such genetically engineered organisms are not generally recognized as safe on the basis of scientific procedures within the community of experts qualified to assess their safety. Paragraphs 6 through 10 explain why these new foods entail higher risks, and paragraphs 12 through 15 explain why none of them is generally recognized as safe.”

Dr. Mae-Wan Ho - 2001

“Since the 1980s, preoccupation with patenting and start-up companies has compromised the quality of molecular genetics research, stifling basic science and innovation, and failing to serve the public good. Worse still, many scientists are consciously or unconsciously ignoring scientific evidence of the hazards. I got involved in the genetic engineering debate in 1994, to try to inform our policymakers and the public, and to start debate and discussion from within the scientific community.

For the past seven years, I have had to follow developments in genetic engineering science much more carefully and extensively than many of the practitioners, only to find that all my fears concerning the problems and dangers of genetic engineering are being confirmed. I shall highlight some of these before going to discuss what needs to be done.”

Prof. David Schubert - 2002

“The potential consequence of all of these perturbations could be the production of biomolecules that are either toxic or carcinogenic, and there is no a priori way of predicting the outcome.”

ISIS Report, Prof. Joe Cummins - 2001

“There has not been adequate study of ongoing transposition in GM crops, all of which have been produced by embryo culture. Somaclonal variation has been patented in some crops as a means of producing genetic variability for selection, and it was assumed that the crops were genetically stable once established. But that assumption was not tested in most instances. Certainly, there has been inadequate study of the factors reactivating dormant transposons following plant embryo culture. The threat of extinction mutagenesis has never been discussed in governmental reviews that led to the deregulation of experimental GM crops, nor has there been effort to examine the factors leading to subtle yield-depression in GM crops. It may be only a question of time until GM crops dramatically decrease yield and become extinct. Finally, little or no thought seems to have been given to the havoc that could be wreaked upon the human genome by GM crop retrotransposon running amok within humans and farm animals.”

The Promise of Plant Biotechnology - The Threat of Genetically Modified Organisms - Prof. Patrick Brown
Professor - 2000

“The real threat to the future of plant biotechnology is the irresponsible and premature releases of the first generation of GMOs that are full of unsound scientific assumptions, rife with careless science, and arrogantly dismissive of valid concerns. The current generation of GMOs provide little real benefit except corporate profit and marginally improved grower returns, while at the same time introducing a host of poorly studied human and ecological risks. Not surprisingly, many have questioned the value of these crops and the integrity of those who support their use.

Given these issues and the overall lack of knowledge of rDNA technology it can only be concluded that the current FDA regulations guiding the release and testing of GMOs is inadequate. It can further be concluded that the technology is inadequately developed to ensure its safety. In the absence of a sound scientific basis to predict the full consequences of rDNA crop development, we must either subject all new crops to a rigorous testing program that considers all potential health, social and environmental concerns or halt further release of rDNA crops until a firm scientific understanding of the biological principles is attained.

As scientists it is our responsibility to recognize that we do not yet have sufficient knowledge of the process to use it safely. We must work towards addressing all of the concerns explicit in the current generation of crops, and must support a rigorous testing program to ensure the safety of all GMO food stuffs in the interim. To date many in the scientific community have been unwilling to rationally consider the concerns surrounding the current GMOs and have wrongly considered that a defense of GMOs is a prerequisite to protect the science of plant biotechnology. Nothing could be further from the truth or more threatening to the future of this technology.”

Declaration of Philip J. Regal, Ph.D. - United States District Court for the District of Columbia - 1999

“Rather, it is my considered judgment that the evidence to date, in its entirety, indicates there are scientifically justified concerns about the safety of genetically engineered foods and that some of them could be quite dangerous. Further, in the absence of reliable toxicological tests, it is not possible to determine which of these new foods are dangerous and which are not.

7. It is also my observation that there is not general recognition of the safety of genetically engineered foods among those members of the scientific community qualified to make such a judgment. In fact, it has been my personal experience over numerous years that many of those experts who publicly subscribe to the position that these foods are as safe as their natural counterparts privately admit they have serious doubts. For instance, when I attended a conference on biotechnology in Annapolis, Maryland in 1988, at which many officials from federal regulatory agencies (including the FDA) were present, I was shocked to learn the extent of uncertainty. In informal discussions at meals and on walks, government scientist after scientist acknowledged there was no way to assure the safety of genetically engineered foods. Several expressed the idea that, in order to take this important step of progress, society was going to have to bear an unavoidable measure of risk.

8. Consequently, I am deeply troubled by the FDA's decision to permit the widespread marketing of untested genetically food products based on a stated presumption they are, in the general case, equivalent to, and thus are as safe as, their natural counterparts. As I have pointed out, there is no sound scientific basis for such a presumption and the weight of the evidence is against it. It is my considered opinion that such a presumption can only be made by systematically ignoring a large body of solid and relevant evidence.”

Seneff: “Sobering. This blog post is from last year. It's a well written personal story from someone who has suffered from colon cancer and has discovered in his own life that going organic keeps his gut healthy. He contacted me and shared this link, and I'm passing it on here.”

New US EPA documents detail extensive use of neonic seed coatings

We can conclude that GM Bt insecticidal crops don’t cut insecticide use. They have merely driven insecticides underground – from being sprayed onto the growing crop, to being applied as seed treatments.

Since neonicotinoid seed treatments rose in parallel with the spread of GM insecticidal crops, no one can accurately claim that Bt crops have ever reduced chemical insecticide use. Any observed diminishment of insect damage in the early days of Bt crops, before pests evolved resistance, might have been due to the neonic seed treatments and not to the Bt toxin engineered into the crops.

Monsanto, EPA Seek to Keep Talks Secret on Glyphosate Cancer Review By Carey Gillam, U.S. Right to Know

Monsanto has so far turned over six million pages of documents through the court-ordered discovery process, but has designated roughly 85 percent of the information as "confidential," meaning plaintiffs' attorneys must black out information from those documents in any court filings that could be accessed by reporters or other members of the public. That designation is improper for many of the documents, especially ones dealing with the company's interactions with, and influence attempts over, EPA officials, plaintiffs' lawyers argue.

The lawyers say that the documents obtained through discovery show that "Monsanto has been confident all along that EPA would continue to support glyphosate, whatever happened and no matter who held otherwise." According to the court filings by plaintiffs' attorneys, the documents show "it is clear that Monsanto enjoyed considerable influence within the EPA's OPP, and was close with Mr. Rowland... The documentary evidence strongly suggests that Mr. Rowland's primary goal was to serve the interests of Monsanto."

Another win for Monsanto: US raises allowable levels of company’s pesticide in crops - 2013

Through the EPA’s new standards, the amount of allowable glyphosate in oilseed crops such as flax, soybeans and canola will be increased from 20 parts per million (ppm) to 40 ppm, which GM Watch acknowledged is over 100,000 times the amount needed to induce breast cancer cells. Additionally, the EPA is increasing limits on allowable glyphosate in food crops from 200 ppm to 6,000 ppm.

Just last month, The Cornucopia Institute concluded a study by finding glyphosate “exerted proliferative effects in human hormone-dependent breast cancer.” A similar study released in April concluded that “glyphosate enhances the damaging effects of other food borne chemical residues and environmental toxins.”

“Negative impact on the body is insidious and manifests slowly over time as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout the body,” independent scientist Anthony Samsel and MIT’s Stephanie Seneff concluded in the April study. “Consequences are most of the diseases and conditions associated with a Western diet, which include gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, autism, infertility, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.”

Dr. Don M. Huber, emeritus professor of plant pathology at Purdue University, found in yet another examination that “Glyphosate draws out the vital nutrients of living things,” in turn removing most nutritional value from GMO foods.

Subway chicken in Canada was part meat, part something else, according to DNA analysis

In Subway’s case, the results were so unusual that the team purchased additional chicken to test. The lab analyzed six orders of the chicken strips and seven pieces of the oven roasted chicken. Averaged across all samples, the roasted sandwich meat proved to be only about 50 percent chicken by DNA. The strips were just over 40 percent chicken. The rest of the DNA, as the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported, mostly came from soy.

Monsanto Cancer Suits Turn to EPA Deputy's 'Suspicious' Role

Plaintiffs say the litigation has turned up documents showing that Rowland, who was an EPA deputy division director, was “straining, and often breaking, ethics and rules to benefit Monsanto’s business." Another exhibit is a letter from a former EPA scientist to Rowland arguing there are scientific grounds for the EPA to reclassify glyphosate from a "possible human carcinogen" to a "probable" cancer-causing agent.

Gene Drives: A Scientific Case for a Complete and Perpetual Ban

These are the harsh realities that regulatory systems have long ignored. Having failed to protect the population against synthetic chemicals and failed to protect the environment from GMOs, it is illogical to expect that regulation organized on conventional lines will protect us from gene drives or any other wild GMO organisms.

This leads to just one conclusion. Unless a radically novel system of regulation can be invented, we should forget about gene drives. Just as we would have been better off foregoing agricultural pesticides and fungicides because regulatory systems lacked the rigor to oversee them. Gene driven organisms equally must never be released.

Elevated Urinary Glyphosate and Clostridia Metabolites With Altered Dopamine Metabolism in Triplets With Autistic Spectrum Disorder or Suspected Seizure Disorder: A Case Study - William Shaw, PhD

Conclusions: The pattern of metabolites in the urine samples of the males with autism are consistent with a recent theory of autism that connects widespread glyphosate use with alteration of animal and human gastrointestinal flora. That theory is that the normally beneficial bacteria species that are sensitive to glyphosate are diminished and harmful bacteria species, such as Clostridia, that are insensitive to glyphosate, are increased following exposure to glyphosate. Excessive dopamine, caused by inhibition of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase by Clostridia metabolites, in turn, produces oxidative species that damage neuronal Krebs cycle enzymes, neuronal mitochondria, and neuronal structural elements such as the neurofibrils.

Scientific American: Dirt Poor: Have Fruits and Vegetables Become Less Nutritious?

Because of soil depletion, crops grown decades ago were much richer in vitamins and minerals than the varieties most of us get today

The Organic Consumers Association cites several other studies with similar findings: A Kushi Institute analysis of nutrient data from 1975 to 1997 found that average calcium levels in 12 fresh vegetables dropped 27 percent; iron levels 37 percent; vitamin A levels 21 percent, and vitamin C levels 30 percent. A similar study of British nutrient data from 1930 to 1980, published in the British Food Journal, found that in 20 vegetables the average calcium content had declined 19 percent; iron 22 percent; and potassium 14 percent. Yet another study concluded that one would have to eat eight oranges today to derive the same amount of Vitamin A as our grandparents would have gotten from one.

Brazil becomes the newest country to refuse GMO imports from the United States

However, there seems to be a catch. Currently, Brazil is the second largest producer of GM crops in the world (the United States is the first). 93% of their soybeans, 90% of their corn, and 60% of their cotton is genetically modified. So Brazil’s motivation for rejecting GM crops from their competitors may be related to trade and not health.

As of 2015, there were 38 countries that had banned GM crops. 19 of these nations are from Europe and include Denmark, Luxembourg, Malta, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

US Right to Know & Carey Gillam sue the EPA for Records

“So I sued the EPA this morning; too much dodging, too little transparency. Hoping court will order EPA to turn over records related to its dealings with Monsanto and glyphosate/Roundup.”

This book uncovers the biggest scientific fraud of our age. It tells the fascinating and frequently astounding story of how the massive enterprise to restructure the genetic core of the world's food supply came into being, how it advanced by consistently violating the protocols of science, and how for more than three decades, hundreds of eminent biologists and esteemed institutions have systematically contorted the truth in order to conceal the unique risks of its products–and get them onto our dinner plates.

Altered Genes, Twisted Truth provides a graphic account of how this elaborate fraud was crafted and how it not only deceived the general public, but Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Barack Obama and a host of other astute and influential individuals as well. The book also exposes how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was induced to become a key accomplice--and how it has broken the law and repeatedly lied in order to usher genetically engineered foods onto the market without the safety testing that's required by federal statute. As a result, for fifteen years America's families have been regularly ingesting a group of novel products that the FDA's own scientific staff had previously determined to be unduly hazardous to human health.,+Twisted+Truth:+How+the+Venture+to+Genetically+Engineer+Our+Food&linkCode=sl2&tag=satish0b-20&linkId=1e0aaa33ea65e8cd7f1490ac62943cf8

UN Experts Slam Global Pesticide Industry for Human and Environmental Damage – Full Report

Urging a new approach to farming, they say: “It is time to overturn the myth that pesticides are necessary to feed the world and create a global process to transition toward safer and healthier food and agricultural production.”

Debunking 'Alternative Facts' About Pesticides and Organic Farming

"When you look at the substances themselves and not at the use rates, organic represents the least toxic set of substances," said Nate Lewis, farm policy director at the Organic Trade Association. "The difference is pretty striking."

Most pesticides allowed for use in organic farming are derived from plants or bacteria. "They have their roots in nature," said Charles Benbrook of Benbrook Consulting Services, an organic consulting firm.

Experts urge revision to pesticide guidelines following toxicity study

Previously, it was always assumed that ‘the dose makes the poison’, in terms of chemicals causing detrimental health effects on organisms. Yet it has now been found that when organisms are exposed to two toxicants in sequence, the toxicity can differ if their order is reversed.

This is due to the fact that some chemicals cause lingering damage to organisms’ systems, causing a slow recovery time, resulting in ‘carry over toxicity’ which then compounds the effects of a second pollutant.

The report calls for (i) stringent regulations to eliminate use of antibiotics in food production, which leads to antibiotic resistance, residues in manure, and contamination of waterways, and (ii) a widespread shift to certified organic food production, which prohibits all antibiotics. EPA joins FDA to approve 3 types of genetically modified potatoes

The three new varieties, Ranger Russet, Atlantic and Russet Burbank, under the company’s Innate brand, are designed to minimize bruising and black spot, as well as reduce the amount of a chemical that is potentially carcinogenic that develops when potatoes are cooked at high temperatures, according to AP.

The potatoes will be mostly grown in Idaho and Wisconsin and will be sold in supermarkets across the nation. One of the company’s oldest business partners, McDonald’s, has rejected using any of Simplot’s genetically engineered potatoes.

The company will likely introduce the potatoes as pre-cut or pre-peeled potatoes for hotel convention centers and restaurants, “where the resistance to bruising makes them a good product,” according to Doug Cole, the company’s director of marketing and communications, who spoke to in January.

The Toxins That Threaten Our Brains

“So you recommend that pregnant women eat organic produce?” I asked Grandjean, a Danish-born researcher who travels around the world studying delayed effects of chemical exposure on children.

“That’s what I advise people who ask me, yes. It’s the best way of preventing exposure to pesticides.” Grandjean estimates that there are about 45 organophosphate pesticides on the market, and “most have the potential to damage a developing nervous system.”

Landrigan had issued that same warning, unprompted, when I spoke to him the week before. “I advise pregnant women to try to eat organic because it reduces their exposure by 80 or 90 percent,” he told me. “These are the chemicals I really worry about in terms of American kids, the organophosphate pesticides like chlorpyrifos.”

For decades, chlorpyrifos, marketed by Dow Chemical beginning in 1965, was the most widely used insect killer in American homes. Then, in 1995, Dow was fined $732,000 by the EPA for concealing more than 200 reports of poisoning related to chlorpyrifos. It paid the fine and, in 2000, withdrew chlorpyrifos from household products. Today, chlorpyrifos is classified as “very highly toxic” to birds and freshwater fish, and “moderately toxic” to mammals, but it is still used widely in agriculture on food and non-food crops, in greenhouses and plant nurseries, on wood products and golf courses.

UN Report Finds that Pesticide Use Negatively Impacts Human Rights

(Beyond Pesticides, March 8, 2017) A report released by the United Nations finds that human rights are adversely affected by pesticide use. With chemicals, like pesticides, long advanced by the synthetic pesticide and fertilizer industry as the answer to feeding the world, the Special Rapporteur on the right to food report concludes that industrialized agriculture has not succeeded in eliminating world hunger, and has only hurt human health and the environment in its wake. The report will be presented before the Human Rights Council today, and aims to give the international governing body an in-depth understanding of the state of global pesticide use in agriculture and its impact on human rights, specifically as it relates to food security. It also looks at the impact of pesticides on the environment, highlighting the need for a transition to more sustainable agricultural practices on a global scale.

It took seven years, from 1976 to 1983, to shut down IBT. And none of the major pesticides that gained license through the flawless data generating IBT machine lost their “registration” with the EPA. This period of wild industry corruption gave birth to glyphosate, a weed killer that achieved global significance, being the biggest selling pesticide ever. From 1974, when it came to market, to 2014, more than 1.6 billion kilograms of glyphosate drenched America. This is a Monsanto product.

Monsanto and the EPA have been lying to us for years about Roundup BY ZEN HONEYCUTT, OPINION CONTRIBUTOR

Decades of faulty chemical review procedures are beginning to be overturned. Last week, after years of asking, I received an email from the EPA confirming that the National Toxicology Program is currently reviewing glyphosate and glyphosate formulations.

This is incredibly welcome news because it has long been the EPA’s policy to only require long term safety studies on the one declared “active” chemical, for approval, not on the final formulation. This means that any claims that the final formulation of Roundup and other pesticides, are safe, are unfounded.

In a meeting I attended with a panel of scientists and consumer groups last year, the EPA Pesticide Review Board admitted to me that they didn't have a single long term study of the final formulation of Roundup. “Then how can you claim that it is safe?” I asked...and they refused to answer.

EPA to Investigate Civil Rights Abuses Over Pesticide Use in Hawaii

(Beyond Pesticides, March 14, 2017) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is opening an investigation into whether the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) and the state Agribusiness Development Corporation (ADC) are discriminating against Native Hawaiians in their administration of the state’s pesticide program. The investigation comes after a number of local community groups, represented by the nonprofit environmental law organization Earthjustice, filed a complaint in September 2016 asking EPA to take action against systemic abuses of Native Hawaiian peoples. Local efforts to protect pesticide-exposed communities have been repeatedly stymied by giant pesticide corporations operating on the island, which filed lawsuits that ultimately struck down local laws.

Unsealed Documents Raise Questions on Monsanto Weed Killer

The court documents included Monsanto’s internal emails and email traffic between the company and federal regulators. The documents also revealed that there was some disagreement within the E.P.A. over its own safety assessment.

Organic Agriculture Offers Clear Human Health Benefits, According to European Report (Beyond Pesticides, March 9, 2017)

This report adds to the growing body of evidence on impaired learning and lowered IQs in children prenatally exposed to low levels of certain pesticides, such as organophosphates. The combined evidence in the report suggests that human exposure to pesticides in the European Union (EU) “may cost at least €125 billion per year, as calculated from the loss of lifetime income due to the lower IQs associated with prenatal exposures.” The authors also note that this number is almost certainly an underestimation, as it does not account for the “possible contribution made by pesticides to the development of other prevalent diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer.”

Welcome to the GMOs 2.0 Ingredients Database!

What are GMOs 2.0? It has been more than 25 years since the first ‘genetically modified organisms’ (GMOs) appeared in the food we eat. Today, a next generation of GMOs have emerged, created through more advanced techniques, referred to as synthetic biology (syn bio) or GMO 2.0. Synthetic biologists employ techniques that allow them to more significantly redesign the genetic makeup of living organisms through constructing, adding, deleting, silencing, or completely rewriting DNA and other genetic elements. They include (but are not limited to) DNA synthesis, genome editing, RNA interference, directed evolution and metabolic engineering. GMO 2.0 ingredients are found in food, feed, cosmetics, fragrances, supplements and more.

What is this database? This is a searchable database of GMO 2.0 ingredients. It includes ingredients that are already on the market, that are close to the market, or that are under development. The information here was compiled through six months of research, and will be updated as new ingredients or information emerges.

Why is this database important? Public opposition to GMO 2.0 is growing. However, the industries using GMO 2.0 are very opaque and it is difficult to determine where GMO 2.0 ingredients are found. This database was developed as an educational resource for consumers, policy-makers and manufacturers of consumer products to shed light on how widely synthetic biology techniques are being used to make everyday ingredients.

New report shows glyphosate producers are “buying science”

“Glyphosate producers have used every trick in the book to enable regulatory authorities around the world to play down the alarming health effects of glyphosate. The fact that the agencies accepted their 'assistance' is nothing less than scandalous,” said Helmut Burtscher, one of the report’s authors.

Scientific panel criticizes EPA assessment of glyphosate

“Even with Monsanto’s undue influence on the makeup of this panel, there was still considerable concern about the safety of this pesticide,” said Nathan Donley, a senior scientist at the Center for Biological Diversity. “When the pesticide office doesn’t even follow its own guidelines in determining the safety of glyphosate, how can we trust its conclusions?”

Got Antibiotics Straight from Your “100% Pure” Orange Juice? EPA Allows Them in Florida Citrus, Contributing to Bacterial Resistance Crisis

(Beyond Pesticides, March 20, 2017) Last week, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it is allowing residues of antibiotics in Florida orange juice, after approving an emergency exemption for the antibiotics streptomycin and oxytetracycline –allowing their use for a bacterial disease, citrus greening (Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) bacterium that causes Huanglongbing), in Florida citrus crops through December of 2019, and further exacerbating bacterial resistance. The World Health Organization has called bacterial resistance “one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and development today.” The agency announced March 15, “EPA is issuing these tolerances without notice and opportunity for public comment as provided in FFDCA section 408(l)(6).” EPA states “time-limited tolerances are established for residues of streptomycin in or on fruit, citrus, group 10-10, at 2 ppm, and the dried pulp of these commodities at 6 ppm.” For oxytetracycline, EPA is allowing residues ” in or on all commodities of fruit, citrus, group 10-10, at 0.4 ppm.” [See below; organic standards do not allow antibiotic use.]

Emails Reveal Monsanto's Tactics To Defend Glyphosate Against Cancer Fears

New details of the company's counterattack came to light this week. Internal company emails, released as part of a lawsuit against the company, show how Monsanto recruited outside scientists to co-author reports defending the safety of glyphosate, sold under the brand name Roundup. Monsanto executive William Heydens proposed that the company "ghost-write" one paper. City Creates Commission to Consider Curbing Herbicide Use

A really good article by Dr. Christian Bogner that shows you Glyphosate’s connection to Autism. Seneff’s and Samsel’s 6th Paper, Glyphosate 6, Glyphosate in Vaccines is still going through the peer review process. If you are following, you can surely understand that there are big powers trying to keep this Paper from being published.

Seneff: “Dr. Christian Bogner is making huge headway in understanding autism and its connection to vaccines and glyphosate! His work is brilliant!”

...As you will find out soon, there is an unreported chemical in vaccines that was found that prevents the microglia from flipping out of the inflammatory state. This chemical is called glyphosate [more below].

This is the reason glyphosate is now able to enter the central nervous system. Glyphosate is small enough to pass through the blood brain barrier. In order to cross the blood-brain barrier, only molecules less than 800-1000 amu (atomic mass unit) in molecular weight can get through. The molecular weight of glyphosate is about 169 amu.

All vaccines tested had glyphosate in them [40]! You can see how a diet rich in glyphosate will put you at risk. According to CDC senior research scientist and whistleblower Dr. William Thompson [78], there was data omitted from African American children receiving the MMR vaccine. And in fact, there is an apparent link to autism.

Why would it affect African American children more so? One plausible explanation is that (according to the National Center for Children in Poverty) 33% of black children (3.6 million) live in poverty. In the 10 most populated states, rates of child poverty among black children range from 29% in California and Florida to 47% in Ohio [79]. Poverty means more processed (cheaper) food choices, which means more GMO derived foods, which means more glyphosate.

It is important to note that because glyphosate is never used alone in industry, the detection of glyphosate may be an indicator of the presence of many other co-formulants in glyphosate-based herbicides which have recently been shown by French scientist Seralini’s team to be endocrine disruptors and up to 1000 times more toxic than glyphosate alone [67].

Wounding Nature — and Ourselves

Pesticides bring us to the agrichemical industry, one of the key linchpins of many of our health and environmental woes. The pesticides industry has captured the EPA and the government. Colin Todhunter, a British researcher, says this industry “wallows like an overblown hog in a cesspool of corruption.” He accuses pesticide merchants for causing more death and disease than tobacco companies. The agrichemical industry, he says, “hides behind corporate public relations, media misrepresentations and the subversion of responsible-sounding agencies which masquerade as public institutions.”

Don’t Plant Those “Bee-Friendly” Wildflowers Cheerios Is Giving Away

No plant is inherently ‘bad’, but many species can and have caused a great deal of damage when they are introduced into locations outside of their native range. Invasive species can out-compete the natives they encounter, they can take up all the space and use up all the resources, they can spread disease, and cause other physical changes to their new homes, all of which can have detrimental effects on native species, and on humans. It doesn’t happen with every plant and in every location, and scientists (like me!) are working now to figure out why that is, how to predict what will cause a problem, how to manage or prevent invasions.

In vacating the EPA approval, the court said that “given the precariousness of bee populations, leaving the EPA’s registration of sulfoxaflor in place risks more potential environmental harm than vacating it.”

The EPA must obtain further data regarding the effects of sulfoxaflor on bees as required by EPA regulations before it grants approval, the court said.

Shockingly Higher Rates of Autism and Developmental Delays in Asia

As in the US, Monsanto has cleverly inserted chemical company executives into government positions to influence policy.

He added that the government has admitted that “developmental delays and autism rates are out of control.”

Regardless of the source of the toxic exposure to children which contributes to developmental delays, whether it be imported food from the USA or local produce sprayed with chemicals, the originating source of their method of farming comes from American chemical companies who convinced farmers around the world to declare war on bugs and weeds with toxic chemicals, regardless of the impact on consumers. The result is that our children, the most vulnerable in our society, are the collateral damage in this global power play.

Sperm-Mediated Inheritance of Acquired Characters

Heredity does not just depend on DNA in chromosomes or organelles, loose sequences of RNA and DNA can be independently inherited, and readily taken up by sperm cells to transfer the father’s acquired characters to the fertilized egg; this underscores the trans-generational hazards of new toxins and nucleic acids introduced into our food chain via genetically modified organisms Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

Common Weedkiller Used in Modern Agriculture Could be Main Factor in Gluten Intolerance

In her most recent research published in a peer-reviewed journal along with Anthony Samsel, she looks at the role of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, which is the most popular herbicide used worldwide, and its toxic effect in destroying our digestive system. Here is another piece of the problem when looking at gluten sensitivities. In a recent interview she was asked about glyphosate’s role in Celiac disease and gluten sensitivities, and this was her reply:

Gluten sensitivity by itself doesn’t necessarily have the transglutaminase immunogenicity of Celiac. It shares the same features with Celiac disease, but it’s not as extreme. But these things also have a host of other pathologies that are associated with this particular condition of gluten sensitivity, which is what’s so fascinating to me. All of these risk factors that co-occur with Celiac disease could be explained through other ways that glyphosate disrupts physiology. That’s the most fascinating thing to me, is that you can explain all of these other things, maybe not directly through the effect of gluten but through the effect of glyphosate on the body.

People who have Celiac disease have increased risk for other things; for example, non-hodgkins lymphoma, and they die earlier because of these other risks. They also have fertility problems, they are more likely to produce children with birth defects, and are more likely to have depression and serotonin problems. All of these things that are connected to Celiac disease, but also exist independently from Celiac disease, are also caused, in our opinion, by glyphosate. (Source)

Here is the Conclusion of the study:

This paper presents an exhaustive review of the toxic effects of the herbicide, glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup®, in humans, and demonstrates how glyphosate’s adverse effects on the gut microbiota, in conjunction with its established ability to inhibit the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes, and its likely impairment of sulfate transport, can remarkably explain a great number of the diseases and conditions that are prevalent in the modern industrialized world. Its effects are insidious, because the long-term effects are often not immediately apparent. The pathologies to which glyphosate could plausibly contribute, through its known biosemiotic effects, include inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, depression, ADHD, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, cancer, cachexia, infertility, and developmental malformations. Glyphosate works synergistically with other factors, such as insufficient sun exposure, dietary deficiencies in critical nutrients such as sulfur and zinc, and synergistic exposure to other xenobiotics whose detoxification is impaired by glyphosate.

Given the known toxic effects of glyphosate reviewed here and the plausibility that they are negatively impacting health worldwide, it is imperative for more independent research to take place to validate the ideas presented here, and to take immediate action, if they are verified, to drastically curtail the use of glyphosate in agriculture. Glyphosate is likely to be pervasive in our food supply, and, contrary to being essentially nontoxic, it may in fact be the most biologically disruptive chemical in our environment.

Seneff: “I don't know why this is still a "mystery disease." The Sri Lankans figured it out a few years back and there are several articles by Jayasumana et al. pointing to glyphosate toxicity working synergistically with nitrates in the water and arsenic. Sri Lanka had the wisdom to ban glyphosate. Nicaragua should follow suit!”

In the new study, Blaise LeBlanc and Gillian Eggleston and colleagues note HFCS's ubiquitous usage as a sweetener in beverages and processed foods. Some commercial beekeepers also feed it to bees to increase reproduction and honey production. When exposed to warm temperatures, HFCS can form HMF and kill honeybees. Some researchers believe that HMF may be a factor in Colony Collapse Disorder, a mysterious disease that has killed at least one-third of the honeybee population in the United States.
