Officials Warn Residents to Avoid Cayuga Lake Water

A manure spill in Scipio Center, New York has contaminated multiple bodies of water according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Tompkins County Health Department officials.

Cayuga Lake and Salmon Creek have both been impacted as a result of the accident.

Officials say the warm weather this weekend caused extra runoff from Sunnyside Farm. That runoff picked up the manure and dumped it into the lake and creek.

That ain't news, it's only been going on for over 200 years. Every lake in the Finger Lakes has the same problem, did someone finally wake up ?

The herd at Sunnyside Farm is about 3600 cows. That is a lot of manure.

I am pretty sure the numbers were much smaller 200 years ago.

So why don't you tell us where the Native Americans and the deer pooped. We can remember when people had outhouses on the end of their docks in the 50s & 60s. Not to mention all the boats that just dumped over the side.

Obviously you don't understand how your environment works. Animals have done their business on every square inch of this planet, it has been in the water and up-taken by plants forever, you eat and drink it and inhale it. Get used to it, besides it's good for you. It is after all the cycle of life.

At one time Seneca Lake was over 1200 feet deep, it has over 600 feet of sediment in it. Erosion by wind and water have, over time, caused the lake to fill up with everything you can think of. Clearing the land for agriculture makes the process even faster. Hobart's research indicates that only a few feet of sediment has accumulated since white man arrived.

By the way, in CAYUGA LAKE goose poop is a bigger problem than cow poop crazy

hey Chuck, see you at lunch

I see no one has followed Kendig Creek over the years. That poop has flowing from ALL the different farm land into the Canel for many, many years. Nothing has been heard of out of that.

OH, don't bet on that ! The people around Lake Ontario are keeping a close watch on all of the Finger Lakes region, in fact they watch every lake river and stream from Oneida Lake to Niagara Falls and north past Watertown. Someday they will put the screws to most of Upstate New York.

You're funny. I suppose wastewater treatment plants are some sort of government conspiracy.

Like I didn't already know. For those of you reading that are wondering, the topsoil you buy at the garden center this spring is harvested from septic pumping. We don't need a link to know more...

The real question is what did you Google to learn this? "It's ok to swim in poop" is my guess.

Why would I spend the time to type out a long winded response to some stupid question, from some know-it-all, to have someone ask for proof of what is said ? hear-all see-all has a fit along with others when proof is not presented like this was a court room or something and nobody but them is entitled to and opinion. So join the crowd. OH and ah, the compost you buy also may have come from an old landfill.Unless of course you buy COW MANURE crazy

The glyphosate from the feed they were fed was going to end up in your bellies anyways via fertilizer spread on crop land and the milk and meat you consume.
