At one time Seneca Lake was over 1200 feet deep, it has over 600 feet of sediment in it. Erosion by wind and water have, over time, caused the lake to fill up with everything you can think of. Clearing the land for agriculture makes the process even faster. Hobart's research indicates that only a few feet of sediment has accumulated since white man arrived.
