Two Tompkins County women arrested for murder of Newfield man

NEWFIELD — Police in Tompkins County say they’ve arrested two women involved in the death of a Newfield man last week.

County Sheriff’s deputies found 30-year-old Camden Rundell lying unresponsive in the yard of a home on Burdge Hill Road Friday night. They said at the time Rundell had been reported as having a heart attack, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

After an investigation this weekend, the Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney’s Office are charging 37-year-old Colleen McColgin of Dryden and 38-year-old Jamie Gerhart of Ithaca with second-degree murder. McColgin and Gerhart have been taken to the Tompkins County Jail.

Police say the investigation is ongoing. There’s no word yet on how Rundell was murdered or a motive in the case.

Good point dawg.

Gotta reckon though, planned conspiracies of this nature are rare in the hood or boonies - unless they involve drugs.

Case in point Newfield.

Jury selection begins in fatal Newfield drug robbery case

Jury selection has begun for a man the District Attorney's Office say likely killed a Newfield man during a robbery in December.

Roy Clements is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and fourth-degree conspiracy. He's pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Police say that Clements and four other people conspired to steal Camden Rundell's marijuana plants, which he kept in the basement of his Newfield home. During the robbery, accusatory documents state that Clements restrained Rundell on his lawn, about 100-feet from his door. Police say that while Clements was being restrained, he died

The incident was initially reported as a cardiac arrest, but police said from the get-go that the death was being investigated as "suspicious" and that police were interviewing people who may have been at the residence when Rundell died.

In total, five people were arrested and charged in connection with the crime: Jamie Gerhart, Colleen McColgin, Dennis Lampila, and Clements, were all charged with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery in the days following the homicide. Melissa Minnick was charged with fourth-degree conspiracy in connection to the crime and pleaded guilty in August.

"We have reason to believe (Clements) was the individual who actually caused the death of Rundell," Deputy District Attorney Andrew Bonavia said in court during a bail hearing in January.

The trial is scheduled to begin after jury selection.

Jury seated in Clements case; trial opens Monday: Court documents allege that Clements, along with Dennis Lampila, Jamie Gerhart, Colleen McColgin and Melissa Minnick, conspired to rob Rundell of marijuana plants at Rundell's home on Burdge Hill Road in Newfield. The robbery resulted in Rundell's death, according to the documents. An autopsy by Dr. James Terzian determined Rundell's death was the result of "probable asphyxiation, secondary to suffocation."
