So mine quit working a couple weeks ago. Bought new ones came in the mail today. They don't work either. They buzz and make noise, but don't play the desired songs etc. Seems like the input jack where I plug them is has s*** the bed. Anything I can do? Go! Dr D?

Several possibilities (sound card, jack, etc.).

Check your sound preferences to be sure that they are set for proper external output.

If no luck:

* Are they connected with an 1/8" jack, USB, other?
* Are they a powered speaker set or are they "passive speakers"?
* What make and model computer system are you using?
* Make and model of speakers?
* Did they come with software (disc OR download)?

Old speakers were Harman/Kardon and they rocked. Bought new ones Cyber Acoustics CA-2014RB Amplified Computer Speaker System. Don't know how to check preferences.
Desktop. No software for the new speakers.

Software is not nessacary for speakers to work, the first question is are the new ones functioning properly?

You can check the setting by clicking start, control panel, hardware and sound, Sound then scroll to your speakers, left click so they are highlighted, then right click and you can test and adjust from there.

Sorry Dr., that's not always the case. Some do require proprietary drivers. Somewhat uncommon, but they exist.

Several Creative Speaker and bluetooth equipped models immediately spring to mind (as opposed to motherboard and sound-card sound drivers).

Alright listen up Tim, I am already on thin ice because I debated with folks up in the racist sounding indian bashing thread which I am now avoiding. I am no longer debating ANYONE in the tech tread about solving issues for users, if you want to add to the discussion feel free to other than that don't respond.

Before you have no one else left to discuss things with please don't, they are standard 3.5mm speakers there is no special driver.... EVER. I am aware of the creative labs soundworks speakers that came with a driver disk that was not needed unless you had windows 95 and wanted to fabricate pseudo 5.1 but were not required to use the speakers. Also, Bluetooth headsets pair with the Bluetooth radio......

I don't care about other devices I am talking to them about what they own not the ones they don't and don't have a problem with.

I was adding to it and you incorrectly told him that speakers do not require software. They sometimes do. You're information was incorrect. Period.

How does providing accurate replies to help those in need of technical advice, warrant such a defensive response from you? I am not "debating" anything. I was making a statement of fact of which yourself just admit is true. No mention was made of any specifics at the time that I replied. YIKES!

Any "debate" is of your own creation.

Thanks for the help guys. Tried this Dr. D I clicked start, control panel then hard ware and sound. No option for speakers I have an option for sound but the choices are only adjust system sound, change system sounds and manage audio devices. It says the speakers are functioning properly?

what model dell is it, it sounds as if the auto config for the speakers is not working properly or the sound card is disabled or just done.

Try plugging them into the headphone jack on the front of your PC.
